Description

Posted Breed: German Shepherd Dog / Bull Terrier / Mixed (medium coat).

Anubis was surrendered to the shelter because he was becoming destructive in his most recent home when left alone. He had originally been crated but was becoming adept at breaking out of his wire crate and when left to roam free would find things to chew on. Anubis'' previous owners think he may have separation anxiety, and with one adult family member away frequently for work and the other wrangling several young kids, they have not been able to work with him on resolving this issue. Anubis may require additional training to overcome his separation issues, a heavy duty kennel when he is alone, and may benefit from a behavioral consult with a vet. He is also made up of two breeds that are highly intelligent and highly energetic! Anubis will not do well as an apartment, stay at home dog. Anubis will need large amounts of exercise and play time; having a purpose or a ''job'' may help modify his anxious behaviors. Anubis may also need a family where his people are either at home with him or willing to bring him with them. Anubis originally came from Seattle, was flown to Alaska, then was left with people here who kept him for several months when the first family returned to Seattle and couldn''t find dog-appropriate housing. Anubis has been all over the place and is just looking for a home that will give him the consistency he craves. Anubis can be pushy and dominant with other dogs, trying to constantly grab and mount them, so mutual visits with any other dogs in the household are required. Anubis'' previous home reported that he did great with kids and babies, however he was pushy with the child-doll we use in temperament tests, and he is quite large, so we are requiring he go to a home with only children over the age of 5 years, if any. Anubis has a VERY high prey drive towards small animals, cats and little dogs, so he must go to a home without cats or small animals, and his new owner should be cautious with him around small dogs in public. Anubis knows ''sit'' and ''lay down'', is housebroken, rides well in a car, and is generally outgoing, affectionate, playful and friendly. He has an intimidating bark behind the kennel door, but once out he prefers to cuddle and get all the loves.

If you're looking to adopt a dog and don't know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  1. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  2. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  3. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  4. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
