Posted Breed: German Shepherd Dog / Bull Terrier / Mixed (medium coat). Anubis was surrendered to the shelter because he was becoming destructive in his most recent home when left alone. He had originally been crated but was becoming adept at breaking out of his wire crate and when left to roam free would find things to chew on. Anubis'' previous owners think he may have separation anxiety, and with one adult family member away frequently for work and the other wrangling several young kids, they have not been able to work with him on resolving this issue. Anubis may require additional training to overcome his separation issues, a heavy duty kennel when he is alone, and may benefit from a behavioral consult with a vet. He is also made up of two breeds that are highly intelligent and highly energetic! Anubis will not do well as an apartment, stay at home dog. Anubis will need large amounts of exercise and play time; having a purpose or a ''job'' may help modify his anxious behaviors. Anubis may also need a family where his people are either at home with him or willing to bring him with them. Anubis originally came from Seattle, was flown to Alaska, then was left with people here who kept him for several months when the first family returned to Seattle and couldn''t find dog-appropriate housing. Anubis has been all over the place and is just looking for a home that will give him the consistency he craves. Anubis can be pushy and dominant with other dogs, trying to constantly grab and mount them, so mutual visits with any other dogs in the household are required. Anubis'' previous home reported that he did great with kids and babies, however he was pushy with the child-doll we use in temperament tests, and he is quite large, so we are requiring he go to a home with only children over the age of 5 years, if any. Anubis has a VERY high prey drive towards small animals, cats and little dogs, so he must go to a home without cats or small animals, and his new owner should be cautious with him around small dogs in public. Anubis knows ''sit'' and ''lay down'', is housebroken, rides well in a car, and is generally outgoing, affectionate, playful and friendly. He has an intimidating bark behind the kennel door, but once out he prefers to cuddle and get all the loves.

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      MISTY

      verified

      rescue
Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Senior
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Misty was surrendered to the shelter because she started a fight with another, larger dog in the household unprovoked and would not let go. This is not typical behavior for her (she has historically liked other dogs, cats, babies and kids and lived peacefully with them), and her owner did not want to risk it potentially happening a second time as she has small children and small animals in the home that could be injured if they were a target or got in the way. Misty was medically evaluated and she was found to have some stiffness and arthritis issues, exacerbated by being grossly overweight. Misty has lost 7 pounds on her new diet and has started a joint supplement! Misty will need a recheck exam with Chena Vet in 1 week''s time to see if her joint supplement is adequate to keep her comfortable or if she needs to be on additional medication. This recheck is covered by the shelter fund but any future medications or vet visits will be the responsibility of the new owner, so please take Misty''s vet care and ''old-dog'' needs into consideration if you think you want to adopt her. Misty will come with a bottle of Dasuquin to get her started! Misty will need to continue her diet in her new home, and her new owners should increase her exercise and activity as she loses weight and becomes stronger. Due to the circumstances surrounding Misty''s surrender, she must go to a home without kids younger than 5 years, and without other cats or dogs. Misty is housebroken, kennel trained, and rides well in a car. She is an affectionate girl who knows ''sit'' and ''get down'', but can get into the garbage if left unattended. Misty is ready to get fit and have a new lease on life- if you are ready for a doggy gym partner, ask to visit Misty today!

      THUMPER

      verified

      rescue
      Breed: German Shepherd Dog-Husky Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Husky / German Shepherd Dog / Mixed (short coat). Thumper was brought to the shelter because his owners could no longer take care of them due to having too many dogs. Thumper has lived his life in rural Alaska outdoors. He is not house broken and does not know how to bide his time when indoors. Thumper''s previous owners described him as a `good outside dog, loves to go out country & run`. Thumper is all grown up, however he can still learn new tricks like basic obedience and how to not potty inside! He is very playful and loves treats! Thumper will be a great companion for a family that enjoys outdoor adventures! UPDATE: Thumper was returned to the shelter after 2 days in his most recent home because he bit one of the family''s children (a bone was involved). Thumper''s most recent owner states that he is jealous of babies and aggressive towards slightly older children and should go to an adult only home. Thumper is a special needs adoption. He cannot go to a home with children under 12 years of age and mutual visits with any other dogs in the home are required.

      *FALENE

      verified

      rescue
      Breed: Husky-Pointer Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Husky / Pointer / Mixed (medium coat). Falene was dropped off at the shelter with no history and no paperwork, so very little is known about her. Falene seems to be a fairly typical Husky, full of energy and go. Upon her arrival at the shelter she was kept outside in the dog yard and appears to be familiar with using a dog house, so may have been an outside/working dog in her past life. Falene was brought inside after she was spayed because she had a lump attached to her uterine tissue which we wanted to have tested before making her available. Our doctor has confirmed that the lump is non-cancerous, however Falene may have some uterine tissue remaining inside her, so if her new owner notices her spotting blood, she should come back to the shelter for a second round spay. Falene will not be able to get pregnant even if she does have some remaining uterine tissue. Falene has behaved nicely towards her tenders but is quite shy and nervous, so likely has limited ''pet-dog'' experience and her new owners will need to be vigilant about keeping her contained or leashed, since if she gets away she may not come back. Falene has also behaved nicely towards her canine neighbors out in the dog yard and is a good eater! It is likely that Falene has never been around cats, kids, or small animals, so caution should be used if attempting to introduce her to any of the above. Falene is still young and her new owners should expect that she will need a fair amount of exercise and mental stimulation to prevent her from engaging in any destructive behaviors when left to her own devices. It is possible Falene has skijoring or mushing skills, and if not, she may be a good candidate for learning! At the very least Falene should go to an active home that will enjoy exploring the great outdoors with her. Falene is not an ''apartment dog'' and will not do well kenneled for long periods of time or left loose to entertain herself. She may also have limited to no indoor dog skills, including housebreaking, so please consider your lifestyle before asking to meet this lovely girl.

      rescue
      Breed: Unknown Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Senior
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Husky (short coat). Truffle came to the shelter as a stray so very little is known about her. Truffle is nice but extremely shy so her new owners will need to be careful to keep her leashed and safely contained, because if she gets loose she is unlikely to come back. Truffle may have been kept as an outside dog at some point, and may have limited inside manners, but appears to keep her kennel trained, so may be housebroken or have some inside experience. Truffle is an active girl who is hoping for an active home that will take her on plenty of adventures while helping her to build her confidence. Truffle has been well behaved with her canine neighbors and her animal tenders, but may not have ever met cats or kids before, so caution should be used when introducing her to either. Mutual visits with other dogs in the household are always recommended. If you want to give this sweet shy girl a chance, ask to visit today!

      BANDIT

      verified

      rescue
      Breed: Chow Chow-Labrador Retriever Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Chow Chow / Mixed (short coat). Bandit was surrendered because his owners were moving. Bandit''s owners report that he does not have experience with children or babies, but because he is nervous, a bit clumsy, and does not like having his face and paws touched, Bandit will do best in a home without small children (5yrs and younger). Bandit does tolerably well with strangers and likes both men and women he gets to know, does ok with both dogs and cats, and even has experience with rabbits! When Bandit needs to go to the bathroom, he will scratch at the door. Bandit rides well in the car but may get into garbage or jump on counters if left unattended. Bandit knows the commands ''sit'' and ''shake''! Bandit plays hard, so mutual visits are strongly recommended to ensure he is a good fit. Bandit is a sweet but nervous boy who needs a gentle family. He is also quite overweight at this time (he could stand to lose about 15-20 pounds), so he should go to someone who is active and willing to exercise him often :)
