Posted Breed: Chihuahua. Scooter is a 9-year-old, 10-pound Chihuahua mix. The first piece of feedback we received about him from one of our volunteers was, "Scooter should be called 'HAPPY'." He is exactly that! This adorable little dude has a great personality and loves to go for walks. You'll have a blast following his little wagging tail around your neighborhood as he sniffs everything and makes lots of friends - especially of the small dog variety. He is a graduate of the UnChained program, which matches at risk youth with shelter dogs who can benefit from training to help make them more adoptable. Scooter learned a lot in this program - he knows sit, stay, down, come and can even do a bit of agility! He matches his energy to yours. Since he will want to follow you from room to room, you'll set the pace for Scooter's day. When you leave, he might make a little noise to let you know he's ready for your return. So why not take him with you? He loves riding in the car and wants to be close to you. Even at night... In fact, he'd really like it if you let him not only sleep on the bed, but actually in it. Scooter is a burrower who prefers sleeping halfway down the bed with his head facing toward the foot. Maybe so he can be comforted that you're nearby and not leaving him. Scooter has skin allergies which are alleviated by monthly injections. Scooter came to POMDR after being surrendered to a local shelter when his guardian could no longer care for him.

Chihuahua

Overview: The Chihuahua is a tiny bundle of joy. Kids love him ' and for good reason. This breed seems always excited about something. They do best as an indoor dog, but they love to scamper around in the yard ' in suitable weather.
Breed Group: Toy
Weight (lbs): 6
Height (in): 6-9
Colors: Any.
Coat: Smooth with soft, glossy hair or long with soft straight or wavy coat and fringed ears.
Character: Chihuahuas are very intelligent little dogs that are much more brave than their small size suggests. They often bond with only one person.
Temperament: This breed usually lives with other dogs and cats very easily. Children should be taught how to play with this small dog as many try to treat it as a toy.
Care: The Chihuahua requires occasional grooming with a brush and comb. Trim claws and check teeth on a regular basis. Care of the long coat entails brushing 2 to 3 times a week.
Training: This breed is eager to learn, so don't let the small size deter you from properly training him.
Activity: Chihuahuas can typically get sufficient exercise by playing indoors.
Country of Origin: Mexico
Health Issue: This breed has a short nose and large eyes, which can cause some problems (e.g., wheezing, dry eye, glaucoma). They are prone to slipped stifle, gum problems, colds, stress, and rheumatism.
Life Expectancy: about 15 or more

More About Chihuahua Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Sasha Fierce...

      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed. Breed: Toy Mixed Breed, Small Mixed Breed Age: 11 years, 10 years Weight: 5 pounds, 11 pounds Gender: Female, Female These two girls adore one another. They have been together since puppyhood and often sleep snuggled in the same bed, and they're looking for a special adopter who will protect their little family unit. Sasha can be shy, but only for a moment. She quickly warms up to strangers, especially if she's put in a lap where she can curl up and feel safe. She listens attentively, tilting her head from side to side as you talk. And she lets you know she'd like you to hold her by putting her tiny paws on your leg. Her big, bright eyes give a hint to the smart, confident dog she is. While she gets along well with other dogs of all sizes, she'll let big dogs know when they're making her uncomfortable. Sasha loves to go on walks, especially if you carry her most of the way and then give her time to get out and explore, and she's great riding in the car. Priscilla is the more bashful of the two, often looking to Sasha for guidance on how to behave. If Sasha warms up to another dog or person, Priscilla is sure to follow - she truly looks up to her big sister. Priscilla is great on the leash and loves to discover new things as you go on walks. She communicates via cute little grunts and sighs, and she's a bit of a quiet snorer at night. Priscilla loves a good belly rub or to be gently pet - she's not as much of a lap dweller as her sister. As long as you provide some reassurance, she's a good passenger in the car. Both girls are housetrained and mellow, resting quietly while you work or watch TV. They also behave when left home alone. They're happy as long as they have each other, a warm, safe place to sleep, and a person or two (or many) who love them. They came to POMDR when their guardians moved into housing that didn't allow pets. We're happy to be able to keep them together.

And boy, do they love each other. No sibling rivalry here - they are quite content both being in your lap at the same time and falling soundly asleep. These two are quiet, easy keepers who get along well with dogs of all sizes. Pepe and Taz are adorable. Taz is the slightly more "tan" colored dog, so yes, it's possible to tell them apart! They can often be found kissing or cuddling, or asking politely for you to pick them up. Pepe and Taz lived with other dogs and three kitties in their previous family and they got along with everybody. Their favorite pastime (other than getting your attention) is lounging on a sunny patio and soaking up some rays. We'd love to keep Pepe and Taz together. They have been together since puppyhood and came to us when their guardian passed away.

Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed. Breed: Small Mixed Breed Age: 9 years Weight: 7 pounds Gender: Female This adorable girl is ready to meet you. Maeby warms up to new people quickly. She will walk up very slowly to a new person, but then allow them to pet her, and in return she gives them kisses. She does the same with children. Maeby can walk happily for miles, but at home she's very mellow, spending much of her time napping, sitting in laps or quietly chewing on a chewy. She gets along very well with the other dogs in her foster home, and they play together nicely. Maeby ignores the household cats unless they are persistent about pestering her. Maeby is fine meeting new dogs unless they are too rambunctious, in which case she worries. She walks very well on a leash in familiar places. In new or very busy places she can get spooked and try to pull somewhere that looks safe. When you have to go out without Maeby, she does fine inside the house with access to a doggie door, so that she may go outside into the yard whenever she wishes. Being confined seems to stress her a bit. Maeby rarely barks. Maeby's foster mom reports: "Maeby's best trait is how affectionate she is. She constantly dotes on her people. She is also the best cuddle buddy anyone could ask for. She loves bedtime and will fall asleep in your arms, right next to your head (she has her own pillow) or under the covers if you'll let her!" Maeby originally came to us from the Watsonville Shelter.

Posted Breed: Basset Hound / Labrador Retriever / Mixed. Shorty is a 12-year-old, 25-pound Basset Hound/Lab mix. Patches is his best friend and she is a 13-year-old, 33-pound Queensland Heeler. They have a very strong bond and need to be adopted together. Shorty is a mellow guy who is very sweet with all people. He has a charming, calm personality. He gets along well with other dogs and is a well-behaved boy. He loves being petted and will give little kisses to tell you he's happy being around you. Patches is also a wonderful dog and has a quiet, calm demeanor. She is happy to accept scratches behind the ears and will walk up to anyone to say "hi." She is mostly deaf and has mild arthritis in her hips but has a very gentle, loving soul. Patches treats Shorty like her puppy and takes care of him. They tend to stick together and are very bonded. Shorty and Patches are house-trained and walk nicely on the leash, though they won't need long walks to tire them out. We do not know if they have lived with cats before but they are very calm dogs and would probably be fine with feline friends in the household. They are currently outdoor-only dogs and would love an opportunity to come back in the house and be a part of a family again. Shorty and Patches came to POMDR after their guardian passed away and their guardian's family members were unable to care for him.

Tail held high, Patches explores his surroundings eagerly, and will take his leash in his mouth to urge his person to go out for a walk. He also like to make time in his day for some cuddling, too! When Patches goes out for his walk, he trots along with a pep in his step, happy face smiling and tail waving merrily the whole time. Patches sniffs every scent and he is a perfect little gentleman. She suffered a spinal injury before arriving at San Jose Animal Services, and a good samaritan knew she deserved a second chance. Phoebe is recovering nicely from spinal surgery, with a possibility of eventually regaining some ability to walk. The vet says that she is making excellent progress and has hopes she will be able to walk someday, but she is still on crate rest for a few weeks. Phoebe has a darling, silly personality and is NOT shy! She loves toys and giving kisses. She is outgoing with people and nonchalant about meeting other dogs. She is good at riding in the car. Her foster mama says she is an "overall great dog" who just needs extra TLC because of her back injury. Do you have room in your heart for this babe?

Breed: Chihuahua Mix Age: 6 years Weight: 10 pounds Gender: Male Walter can be a bit reserved when first meeting you, but a few head scratches later and he's all yours. This little guy isn't clingy, though. He wants to spend his days near you, but he doesn't have to be sitting on your lap the entire time. Great news for people who like to avoid a dusting of dog hair on their pants. He is an active, alert doggie who enjoys going on walks and saying hello to other dogs. Walter quickly warms up to strangers, but he doesn't always enjoy the energy level (and volume) of young children. He's used to a more laid back scene. Before coming to POMDR, he was the gentle companion of a senior who has since passed away. Walter sleeps quietly in a crate at night and does just fine roaming free during the day. He shares his toys, but he likes to keep his food to himself. If there's a cat in the vicinity, Walter thinks it's great fun to run after it. He's a smart cookie who's currently learning better manners and catching on quickly. Walter will thrive in a relaxed environment with someone looking for a fun, four-legged friend to take on walks and love on.
