Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Dachshund (short coat). CONTACT: For more information about making Sammie part of your life, please contact Katja at 951-973-2757 or katja@hope4animals.org. BIO: Sammie is a delightful 18-month-old fawn-and-white spayed female Chihuahua/Dachshund (aka Chiweenie) mix who was surrendered because her owner claimed they didn't have time to spend with her. Weighing 10 lbs, Sammie is a complete sweetheart in every way. She warms up quickly to new people and loves to be close to her human(s). Her favorite activities include playing with squeaky toys and balls; she also can give a fantastic performance dancing on her hind legs (we call her the "chi-deer" because she has very long, elegant legs)! Sammie walks fine on a leash, and is housebroken and crate trained. She lives in a foster home with other dogs, cats, and children, and gets along beautifully with everyone. Sammie will be a wonderful, loving best friend to an individual or family eager to spend time with her and enjoy her fabulous company. She is a true plug-and-play pet who will be an awesome best friend in any loving home and would be a great choice for a first-time dog owner. For more information about Sammie, please contact Katja at 951-973-2757 or katja@hope4animals.org. Sammie is a COURTESY LISTING and not part of UHA's Shelter Support Program.

Chihuahua

Overview: The Chihuahua is a tiny bundle of joy. Kids love him ' and for good reason. This breed seems always excited about something. They do best as an indoor dog, but they love to scamper around in the yard ' in suitable weather.
Breed Group: Toy
Weight (lbs): 6
Height (in): 6-9
Colors: Any.
Coat: Smooth with soft, glossy hair or long with soft straight or wavy coat and fringed ears.
Character: Chihuahuas are very intelligent little dogs that are much more brave than their small size suggests. They often bond with only one person.
Temperament: This breed usually lives with other dogs and cats very easily. Children should be taught how to play with this small dog as many try to treat it as a toy.
Care: The Chihuahua requires occasional grooming with a brush and comb. Trim claws and check teeth on a regular basis. Care of the long coat entails brushing 2 to 3 times a week.
Training: This breed is eager to learn, so don't let the small size deter you from properly training him.
Activity: Chihuahuas can typically get sufficient exercise by playing indoors.
Country of Origin: Mexico
Health Issue: This breed has a short nose and large eyes, which can cause some problems (e.g., wheezing, dry eye, glaucoma). They are prone to slipped stifle, gum problems, colds, stress, and rheumatism.
Life Expectancy: about 15 or more

More About Chihuahua Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Breed: Bullboxer Pit
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Senior
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Boxer / Mixed (short coat). COURTESY POSTING: Elise is an alum of our Shelter Support Program, but not currently at the shelter. Please contact mispits.photography@gmail.com for more information on adopting Elise. Pet Information Elise is a delightful 9-year-old black (with plenty of silver frosting!) female Pit Bull and Boxer mix who was adopted from a high-intake shelter and then abandoned just a few weeks later when her adopter decided to move out of state and leave her behind. Thank goodness a wonderful team of good Samaritans came to her rescue! Weighing 58 lbs, Elise is a social butterfly: she wants nothing more than to be with people and other dogs. She loves to walk and is polite and cooperative on leash. She is living in a foster home with multiple large dogs and gets along great with everyone. She is housetrained and extremely well-mannered (her foster dad is a professional dog trainer!). Elise's idea of a good day includes a short stroll around the neighborhood, some sunbathing, some cuddling, and plenty of time just being near her people and her pack. We can’t imagine an all-around nicer dog, and we hope a compassionate adopter or rescue gives her the attention and love she deserves in her golden years. Elise has lots of love left to give, and will reward you generously with her devotion and humor. The video attached is from when Elise was still in the shelter. Elise is microchipped and current on vaccines. Please contact mispits.photography@gmail.com for more information on adopting Elise.

      NISA

Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier-Labrador Retriever Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Senior
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). CONTACT: Katja at katja@hope4animals.org or 951-973-2757. **COURTESY POSTING** Nisa is a mature female lab/pit mix who spent over a month at the very busy Riverside shelter. We think she is about 8 years old. She came into the shelter in rough shape, emaciated and with major hair loss and some old wounds. It is clear her previous life was a tough one. When we told the staff there we wanted to rescue her, they were over the moon. During her time there she had won over the hearts of volunteers and staff and they all really wanted to see her make it out of the shelter to safety. Nisa loves going for walks and laying on her bed in the sun. She is so grateful for all the love and affection she is receiving out of the shelter. Nisa was kenneled with other dogs at the shelter, but now that she is feeling better, she has shown some signs that she would do best as an only dog. She would be an easy dog to please with a soft scratch behind her ears, a bully stick every once in a while, and a stroll around the block. Nisa would be forever grateful to have a happy, relaxed life, and will be a devoted best friend in a household seeking a cheerful, laid-back companion. Misa is spayed, microchipped, and current on vaccines. For more information, please contact Katja at katja@hope4animals.org or 951-973-2757.

Pet Information CONTACT: UHA ADOPTION COORDINATOR SANDRA AT 323-350-7207 OR AT sandraburkhardt07@yahoo.com Description: ~~A5131560 Ginger is a bubbly and beautiful 3-year-old tricolor (tan, black, white) spayed female German Shepherd whose owner surrendered her to the Baldwin Park Animal Care Center without giving a reason on November 20th. Weighing 55 lbs, Ginger has been deemed Rescue Only (with an indemnity waiver) by the shelter because of her behavior during a playgroup with other dogs. Other sessions of the playgroup and a meet-and-greet were different, but the label stands. For one outing, Ginger was puppyish when a volunteer approached her in her kennel to be leashed and taken out—she jumped up playfully and wiggled with eagerness. Once on leash, she walked well and, upon entering the playgroup yard, met Bella (a greeter dog, A5122918), exchanged sniffs, and went exploring rather than play. She also checked back in with her handler at various times. She’s intelligent and very much a working dog, so she needs a job! She also needs a chance to calm down outside the shelter in a secure and loving environment in order for anyone to see her true personality and behavior. We’re hoping that a rescue will step forward to claim this young, curious beauty so that she can become the indoor pet and companion she’s meant to be. PEE WEE

      Breed: Chihuahua-Unknown Mix

      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat). United Hope for Animals (UHA) is a volunteer group and does not have a facility for animals. This pet is part of our Shelter Support Program at the Baldwin Park Shelter and is currently being fostered by a volunteer. For more information about the pet, the adoption process, or our program please contact julianadee@yahoo.com. Pet Information Pee Wee was rescued from the Baldwin Park shelter 5 weeks after his owner surrendered him to this high/open intake shelter, through no fault of his own. He was understandably overwhelmed and a little shy at the shelter, but to UHA volunteers who have taken him out for walks and play time, Pee Wee is just adorable, in looks and spirit. So, when Pee Wee became the longest small breed resident at the shelter, we just had to make sure this little darling is safe and get him out! Pee Wee is an adorable fawn/brindle 5-year-old neutered male Chihuahua mix with heart-melting hazel eyes. Weighing 8 lbs, Pee Wee lives up to his name - he is so small and cute! He has a lovely calm, medium energy - he enjoys being held or cuddling up next to his human while watching TV or taking a nap - a total lapdog. His tail won't stop wagging when he gets tummy rubs (check out his adorable videos). Pee Wee always got along with different kennel mates while at the shelter, and in his foster's home, Pee Wee adjusted seamlessly to his foster dog siblings, becoming instant buddies to other small dogs. He knows his manners around other dogs, he doesn't fight over food or toys, though he does enjoy his meal times and treats, and playing with stuffed toys or chasing squeaky tennis balls. Sweet Pee Wee deserves a his loving forever home and will be a lovely addition to any home in any type of household (though if it’s a house with small children, you’ll want to teach them how to respect his small size and tender nature). Be sure to check out his photos and videos and contact his foster mom for more information or to meet him. COURTESY LISTING CONTACT: Katja at katja@hope4animals.org or 951-973-2757 NICKY is a delightful white-with-black one-year old spayed female Pit Bull mix who was rescued with her ten tiny puppies. Nicky's pups have all been adopted, and now it's time for this lovely young gal to find a loving home in which she can be the baby. Weighing 48 lbs, Nicky is a sweet, attentive, and playful dog. She would like to be part of an active household where she can join you on walks or hikes. Like all teenage dogs, she likes to do things and be part of daily activities. Nicky is crate trained and walks well on leash; she would benefit from continued obedience to keep her focused and help her mature into a breed ambassador. She is a smart dog who wants to please, and will thrive in a dog-experienced home that understands that all dogs need guidance and structure. I am about 18-months-old and I am a bluenose Pit Bull mix puppy. I am full of lots of puppy energy! I adore playing with other dogs and get very excited around playtime. I currently live with FIVE other doggies who are my best friends, and I am currently being trained how to control my energy level. When I go to my new home, I will need to continue to work with trainer so I can become the best canine citizen there is! I ride very well in the car and I am currently potty trained. I know how to listen to my foster mama and will only chew on appropriate toys. I walk very well on leash, and I also know many commands! I know how to "sit," "wait," "down," "leave it," "stay", and "easy." I also know how to "shake" and "roll over" (both ways!) I get along very well with older children and can respect younger children, but I probably shouldn't live with them since I might accidentally knock them over with my puppy energy and enthusiasm. I am spayed, up to date on shots and rabies, and microchipped.
