Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat). Please contact Paula (pjstoppler@msn.com) for more information about this pet. Dash reached rescue in a round-about way. He was rescued the first time, as a tiny 8 week old puppy - being sold at a garage sale for 5 bucks. Three little puppies were stuffed in a guinea pig cage and offered up for sale. Two of the puppies were immediately sold. An animal lover, and Good Samaritan, couldn't bear to see this little dog being given to any one that had a five dollar bill in his pocket, and although she had 3 dogs at home, she took this one, too. She still worries about what happened to the other tiny pups. It didn't appear that the puppies had been socialized very well. Dash was very shy, but once he warmed up to the family, everything was good. However, this busy family still had 3 dogs and this little busy Chihuahua seemed to require much more attention than the older ones. Reluctantly, with tears in their eyes, the family that rescued Dash from an unknown future, has decided that he would be happier in another home, where there is not so many other animals, and more attention is devoted to him. He's a big lover, loves sitting on your lap, and this busy family just doesn't have the time for this love-bug. Dash is crate trained; in fact. he looks forward to going into his crate at night; it's his man-cave:) He's neutered, current on his vaccinations, and will be microchipped prior to rehoming. He's now a friendly, happy dog, but still a bit on the shy side. He gets along OK with older children, who respect his small size and treat him gently. Dash is an athletic little guy; can jump and scale a 4' fence if there's something/someone on the other side that grabs his attention. A fenced yard is imperative. d If you would like to complete our Adoption Application, please do so! If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Moxie was surrendered to rescue when her beloved elderly owner moved into assisted care living. This little dog is 10 years old, but certainly doesn't act like it. She is very active, and has a trim athletic body of a 2 year old :) Moxie - the foxy doxie! She's an attention hog :) and she won't take "no" for an answer when she wants to climb up on your lap for snuggling. She's a precious little girl, a tiny dog, about 10 pounds. She is spayed, current on her vaccinations and microchipped. If you would like to complete our Adoption Application, please do so! Location: USA
Posted Breed: Yorkshire Terrier Yorkie / Mixed (long coat). Please contact Paula (pjstoppler@msn.com) for more information about this pet. Our rescue often gets requests for help from over-crowded regional shelters. This latest request was on behalf of a tiny Yorkie mix that would not be put up for adoption because she had shown aggressive tendencies toward kennel staff. The dog was deemed "unadoptable" and would be euthanized unless a rescue group stepped up. When we arrived at the municipal shelter, and went to meet this little dog, she was shaking so badly, she could hardly stand up. She was scared to death. Across the aisle were kennels of large loud barking dogs. No wonder this little one was scared. This photographer was scared at the lungeing dogs. Surprisingly, she allowed a kennel worker to put her in a travel case for her ride back to Longview. Once we got to the foster home, and the carrier door was opened, she immediately ran to a corner, to hide behind a cage. But within 5 minutes, shew as poking her head around the corner, investigating what was going on. She was not trembling in fear. She was curious, about the mini-Dachshund that was sharing her space. This tiny girl (she only weighs about 8 pounds) just needs a quiet environment with a patient understanding guardian, who will enable her to feel safe again. We don't think she would do well with other pets in the household, although she was fine with the two little dogs she shared a room with. We don't know the history of Lexie. The veterinarian thinks she's about 2 years old. She arrived at the municipal shelter as a stray. Why would somebody dump a tiny pup like this?!! We know there's a home out there that is just perfect for this little doll. She will be spayed, vaccinated and microchipped prior to placement. We're not exactly sure when she will be ready for adoption; she's settling in nicely, but she has a ways to go. If you would like to complete our Adoption Application, please do so! Posted Breed: Staffordshire Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Please contact Paula (pjstoppler@msn.com) for more information about this pet. Callie is a playful high-energy girl with an athlete's body. She is muscular, with not an ounce of fat on her. This girl keeps in shape :) Her favorite type of exercise? Playing fetch. She'll fetch anything you throw, weather it's a ball or a stick or a rawhide chew. She'll wear you out! Callie is a social girl, who has the biggest grin on her face when she's happy: her entire face becomes transformed in her "happy grin." Her tongue lolls uncontrollably out of her mouth, and her lips take up her entire face :) she looks like a goofy cartoon character when she smiles. Such a funny girl. We think the best home for Callie would be with an active family. Callie would be an excellent jogging partner, or your best buddy as you're hiking the North Cascades or exploring the Pacific Northwest. Posted Breed: Mastiff / Mixed (short coat). Please contact Paula (pjstoppler@msn.com) for more information about this pet. Bella is a young dog, about 2 years old, who has lived the majority of her life on the street with her guardian, who was also without a home. Bella became homeless when her guardian was arrested and jailed. Her future was really up in the air. She had no one to advocate for her, no place that she could hang out and be safe. Thankfully, she was signed over to rescue to find a stable environment for her. She is a very social girl, meets new people easily. Loves attention. Because of her size (100#), she shouldn't be placed in a home with other dogs; she's still a puppy herself, and puppy-play could injure a smaller animal. Bella is spayed, current on her vaccinations, and microchipped. She's ready for her permanent Forever Home. If you would like to complete our Adoption Application, please do so! Posted Breed: Jack Russell Terrier (short coat). Please contact Paula (pjstoppler@msn.com) for more information about this pet. Jack is a happy, intelligent, athletic little dog who needs an experienced JRT owner, one who understands how to train this little smarty-pants. Jack has a mind of his own, and unless trained properly, won't be a very welcome addition to your home. They are a busy dog, and get bored easily. According to Dogtime.com: "If you want a dog who can learn tricks, run an agility or flyball course in seconds flat, play fetch until you drop, and who will make a charming companion when he's not getting into mischief, the Jack Russell may be the dog for you. If you can't deal with a dog who will chew, dig, and bark, rocket through the house multiple times daily, chase cats and other small animals with glee and murderous intent, and will always find the loophole in any command you give, he's definitely not the dog for you, no matter how cute and small he is. Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat). Please contact Shelly (shellywestby@centurytel.net) for more information about this pet. Meet Miss Goldie. She lost her home when her elderly owner moved into assisted living, and Goldie and her 4-legged housemates were not invited to move with him. She originally came from the streets of Los Angeles, where Chihuahuas are over-produced by back-yard-breeders and puppy mills, and hundreds of them a month are destroyed by shelters because of overcrowding. Thankfully, this tiny girl hitched a ride on one of the "freedom flights" out of L.A. County, and found herself in the Northwest, and adopted by a wonderful man. Goldie is now in foster care, and has done very well with all the commotion and craziness of a multi-pet household. When she first arrived, she was very shy/scared, but within a couple of days, settled right into the routine, She knows exactly when mealtime is, and where she sleeps. Goldie enjoys being outside in the play yard, and runs laps, all by herself. We think she was probably a lap dog in her previous life :) Goldie is about 9 years old, weighs only 10 pounds, is spayed and current on her vaccinations.
