Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat). Ziggy is available at the San Martin Animal Shelter. For more information, please contact the Shelter Staff all (408) 686-3900 or for detailed info contact my foster parents below. Hi, I'm Ziggy. Are you looking for a unique and mellow companion who will snuggle with you all day long? That's me. I'm a 6 year old male Chihuahua mix. I'm a huge love-bug and big kisser. My story is a litte sad, but I don't let it get me down. I was found in a box by the side of the road barely conscious. No one expected me to live, but that was before they knew me and knew what a trooper I am! I spent a week in the hospital and week in a wheelchair, and now I'm up and running. I'm not big on long walks because I'm still a little unstable but I can explore the yard like a pro. When I get excited I make cute noises that sounds like a dolphin talking. I'm housebroken and am a very polite roommate! I'm a great sleeper and will sleep all night long in my bed, preferably next to your bed! I am good about playing with my own toys (soft stuffies are my favorite!) I am always on my best behavior except when it comes to cats, but that's still pretty close to perfect! I can't wait to meet my new family! If that could be you, please contact Jeri @ (408) 686-3909 or Roxanne @ (408) 921-7211. I am currently living in a foster home and am not on site, but I am only a phone call away!

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Terrier / Mixed (short coat). This little guy is full of energy and spunk, Odie has a sweet loving nature and a fun lively personality. Odie loves to run and play and is up for walks and trips to the beach and anywhere else you might be up for, he is also quite the talker and has plenty to say, no one has ever accused him of being a quiet dog. Odie is all about being a lap dog and loves to cuddle, give lots of kisses and adores attention from everyone he meets. Unfortunately Odie lost one eye this year but has overcome that and is still his loving silly self with lots of love to go around. Odie does well with the cats and dogs in his foster home, but he prefers small dogs like himself as companions and does not do well around bigger dogs. Odie is a great house dog and companion and loves to be around people and other animals, he has never been alone and we don't think he would do well being left alone without causing anxiety to him, so a home with another dog or a stay at home person would be best for him. Odie is looking for his forever home and would love a home where he can play in a fenced in yard and a family who understands he is just a little house dog who loves to sit on your lap while you watch TV and cuddle in bed with you. If you would like more information or would like to meet Odie, please contact his foster mom at .
