Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Dachshund / Mixed. I'm Kiwi the little chihuahua dachshund mix and I'm so excited to enjoy the world around me. For almost 8 years, I spent my life inside of a small crate inside someone's home. I was never taken for walks, held or petted. My crate was my bathroom, sleeping area, and eating area. Humans weren't very kind to me. When the day came that someone finally reached in to touch me, I did the only thing I knew to protect myself - bite! I wasn't sure what would await me outside of the only tiny world I knew and I didn't know what it meant to have a hand coming toward me. Thankfully, the human was patient and persistant and finally got me out of the crate. I was given a temporary home where I learned to trust a little more and enoy life outside of a cage and learn what it is like to not be imprisoned. Now, I'm looking for my forever home. A home where I don't have to worry about crates again. I would prefer to be baby gated into a small room where I can feel secure or better yet, just stay home with you all day! I know how to go potty outside now but if left alone for long periods of time will still go inside. I do love to go outside and love the grasson my feet! I get along great with other dogs and I love attention. I probably wouldn't do well with a small child because I get very nervous when backed into a corner and I will resort to the only protection I know--snapping! My rescuers tell me that there are wonderful humans out there. Humans capable of loving me and being patient with me and touching me with a kind hand. I want that kind of human. I want to be free with you to be a dog and learn what it means to be loved just as I am.

More About Chiweenie Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Harley

      rescue
      Breed: Lab-Pointer
      Sex: Male Male
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Pointer / Mixed. My name is Harley and I’m a pointer mix. I was adopted as a very young pup to be the little brother for my family’s older dog. But, I guess they forgot how much work having a new puppy would be. They got frustrated with me a lot because I didn’t know as much as my big brother. I tried my best to listen and be loyal but they didn’t have time to teach me. They never took me out to meet new people so I learned from an early age that I can’t trust just anyone. One day, they toom me to a trainer who wasn't nice to me, and they said I came back a "bad boy", so they loaded me up in the car and dropped me off at JBAR, where I came from. For the past few months, I’ve been living with my foster mom. Even though I love my new dog AND cat siblings, it took me a little while to warm up to my foster mom because she was a stranger. Finally, I realized that I can trust her. I’m 100% housebroken and a big people-pleaser. When it is time to go to sleep, I head right to my crate and you don’t even have to close the door. My foster mom knows that I’m a good boy because I alert her by barking whenever a stranger comes around. I want to keep us safe! She and my doctor are helping me not worry so much about strangers and they put me on a great medicine called Prozac. Prozac helps to reduce my stress and anxiety about meeting new people. She also has her visitors give me treats when they come over so that I associate new people with good things! I’m starting to learn that new people can be friends but it still takes time for me to trust. Loud and sudden noises make me think that someone’s going to hurt me or my family so I bark to alert them. And those little people, called children, really feel like strangers to me and scare me. I can’t live with children. Even though I am not aggressive, I would be best suited with an experienced dog owner who can patiently give me time to learn to trust and who can continue my education. Once I get to know you, I am so loving and loyal and I’m just like any other puppy. I love to play, chew my marrow bones, and make you laugh. But when I get anxious, I need to be redirected so that I stop barking. I’m still a baby and I'm eager to learn. Can you be my best friend and teacher?

Posted Breed: Chihuahua. This little girl was hit by a car. Fortunately she had no broken bones, only scrapes and bruises. She is a sweet Chihuahua, but not for the first time dog owner as she can nip unexpectedly. Chi experience is a plus! It takes her a while to gain your trust; once she does, she'll remember you forever. Abby is probably not a good fit for a home with young children because she can misinterpret their actions. Someone who really knows and appreciates this breed will make a forever friend with time, love and lots of patience.

      Breed: Shih Tzu-Unknown Mix

Posted Breed: Shih Tzu / Mixed. Hi, I'm SHAWNEY - cute as can be! I'm 3 years old and sweet, but cannot be crated. I'm actually happy, sweet, very active and phenomenally adorable once I get to know and trust you but I intensely dislike being confined in a crate and will react by growling or nipping when being put in or taken out of the crate. I can be dog and person selective; if I like you then we're okay. If not, I can be reactive and could even nip. Because I have this issue, it is recommended that my forever family does not include children. I would do best in a home with a low level of stimulation; a calmer, quiet, environment would be ideal but with a space to use my boundless energy. I enjoy playing with my foster in a fenced yard so that would be a must for my new home. I'm curious about my foster family's cat but I'm not sure what could happen if I ever had the chance to interact with them. I am spayed, up-to-date on Rabies and yearly vaccines, heartworm negative and microchipped. I'm ready to go to a home who can with time, love, appreciation of my high energy level and patient experienced training will help me be all that I can and should be. If that's you, please fill out an online dog adoption application for SHAWNEY.

Posted Breed: Terrier / Mixed (long coat). Hercules is my name; belly rubs are my game. I'm a handsome, very active, sweet, medium-size guy who is looking for my forever family. I love to play with other dogs and to sit in your lap, give kisses and turn over for my belly to be rubbed. I keep life interesting as I can be unpredictable. One thing we can predict is that while I am not good with new people, once I know you I'm a big mush. When someone new walks into my space, I can react by barking, pulling on my leash and sometimes even growling and threatening. My foster mom adores me and knows that in the right home I would be the best dog, ever. Mom says I need a home where there is very little foot traffic. I'm not fond of new people just walking into my home or my space. Mom sends me to another room until the new people are sitting down and ready to be introduced. Mom and I are working on my house training; I'm starting to get the idea. I do get along really well with other dogs and would love to be kept very active and engaged. A fenced yard would be a plus. I'll probably do better in a home with no cats; I would chase them and my people are not sure what I would do if I caught up with them. Are you my forever family? If so, please fill out an online application for HERCULES.

Posted Breed: Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Hi, I'm too shy to boast but I'll tell you a secret. I'm such a sweet girl, puppy pad trained, crate-trained and well on my way to being house trained. I walk to the door to let you know it's time for a potty break. I'm just the right size, about 25 lbs now. I love other dogs and once I get past my initial shyness I will fall in love with you. More importantly, I'm sure you'll fall in love with me. If you are my forever home filled with love and a little patience, another dog in the home to be my mentor, and a fenced yard to run so I can enjoy my high energy level I'm your gal. I will only walk well on a leash with another dog as my walking buddy. When I'm in unfamiliar circumstances, I'm basically shy and nervous but my foster Mom says when I'm in the house, I'm so very active with lots of energy, sweet and funny. When I get overwhelmed at home I hide under the couch, but with lots of patience and time I come out to play. A favorite activity of mine is riding in a car and giving kisses to adults and kids who I know and am with whom I'm comfortable. I would benefit from obedience training. I love living with other dogs; following their lead inspires my self-confidence. What a girl! Please fill out an online dog adoption application for GWEN.
