Posted Breed: Dachshund (short coat). Please contact Pet (information@pethelpersinc.org) for more information about this pet. Julian is an independent little guy, who came to us from a neighboring county, where he had been turned in as a stray. He prefers a quiet home with few visitors and to be either an only dog or to be with other dogs who will not invade his personal space frequently. He is housebroken, crate trained, up to date on shots, neutered, and about 3 years old. He requires a good quality dog food for his coat. Julian prefers to be a couch potato, snuggling in his blankies on the couch or love seat, and will sleep there all night. He does not require crating when home alone, but will comply if required. He needs a bit of patience, and a new home that will allow him time to settle in and get to know new people on his own time. He loves to explore the yard on sunny days, and will spend hours on the screened porch in the sun when the weather is nice. Is this beautiful boy the perfect one for you? If interested in Julian please email adoptionisforever@pethelpersinc.org for an application. For more information on this animal email adoptionisforever@pethelpersinc.org. Pet Helpers is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit foster based volunteer rescue located in Fairmont, WV. We do adopt out of state to approved applicants, if you are willing to drive to WV to pick up your pet. We do not fly or use transport companies. Our adoption fee is $150.00 for mixed breed puppies and adult dogs, $225.00 for full blooded puppies and adult dogs and $50.00 for cats and kittens. If they are too young at the time of adoption, then it is your financial responsibility to spay/neuter the pet by the age of 6 months and you must provide proof for our files that it has been done. All of our pets are checked by a vet, given the shots appropriate for their age and any other treatment deemed necessary by the vet. All of our pets are adopted as indoor pets and are not be outdoors tied to a box 24/7. The pet you are adopting has been living in a home with a foster family. You are expected to take possession of the pet you are applying for within a few days of application approval. This will enable us to accept another pet into that home. More About Dachshund Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Gus is a gorgeous 18 month old pitbull. He's very smart, extremely handsome, a little stubborn and all goofy pitty. He's got a lot of puppy energy wrapped in a gorgeous 62lb package. He will do best in a home without small children as he doesn't know his own strength. He's housebroken and crate trained (even though he's not happy about it) but he still needs to work on manners. He does well with other animals that don't run from him (cause his favorite game is chase) and would especially enjoy a canine brother or sister as part of an active family. Gus has been neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and dewormed. He tested positive for Lyme but is being treated with antibiotics and is not experiencing symptoms. He's a very sweet, loving boy who will complete your home. Posted Breed: Basset Hound / Dachshund / Mixed (short coat). Please contact Pet (information@pethelpersinc.org) for more information about this pet. This is Mya, one of our special needs/medical cases. Mya was adopted as a pup from us about 3-1/2 years ago. In March 2016 she suffered a severe herniated disk in her spine. Her adoptive family didn't think they could handle the issues involved with surgery and potential physical therapy that might be required, so Mya came back to us. She underwent surgery but hasn't yet fully regained the use of her hindquarters. Therefore, Mya has been attending physical therapy once a week to enable her to be able to walk independently where she receives laser therapy and stretching, manual nerve stimulation of her paws/pads, has to walk/lift her feet over 4" high bars, do figure-eights around cones for balance, stretch and stand on 2 legs, then underwater treadmill for 3 sets of 4 minutes each. Mya does not have bowel/bladder control, so wears a diaper. She often lifts her hindquarters, assumes a wide stance and walks/runs now ! She currently weighs about 30 pounds which is just about a perfect weight for her. We believe she is a Basset hound/Dachshund mix. Mya is full of love and life and would dearly love to have her own family once again. She is fostered in Fairmont, WV. If you are that special kind of person that would continue to help Mya become independently mobile while sharing your life with her, please complete an adoption application at https://www.pethelpersinc.org/adoption-application/ For more information on this animal email adoptionisforever@pethelpersinc.org. She is a little high energy at times so she will likely do best with an active family who can give her plenty of exercise. Ava is used to a fenced yard so she still needs some leash work. Ava would love to have a running partner or someone who likes to hike. She loves to run but also likes to snuggle once her energy is burned off. Ava would prefer to be an only dog so she can have all of the attention but she does well with non-dominant similar sized dogs if given time to adjust. Ava is fostered in Fairmont, WV, adoption fee is $150. If you would like more information please email adoptionisforever@pethelpersinc.org. Beautiful , shy and playful....that would be this girl! Wendy is a little shy at first but once she opens up she's just the most amazing girl ever. Wendy more than anything loves to play with other dogs. She is becoming very bonded with one of the other Foster dogs in her foster home so a loving home with another dog is a must. She weighs approximately 40 pounds and guessing between 2 and 3 years old. A fenced-in yard is also necessary for this girl because she does love to r un and play. She does not particularly care for the leash but is doing better. She's doing wonderful with the house breaking not to say she could not have an accident or two but she's doing very very well and is crate trained. Wendy is spay and will be up to date on shots in the next couple days she will also be microchipped, flea treated and wormed. Her adoption fees $150 and she is being fostered in Clarksburg West Virginia If you would like more information please email adoptionisforever@pethelpersinc.org. Posted Breed: Beagle / Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Adoption Fee: 150.00. Please contact Pet (information@pethelpersinc.org) for more information about this pet. A home of my own for Christmas...that's my wish. My name is Daenerys (Daeny for short) and I am a Beagle/Pit mix about 4 years old weighing 45 pounds. I came to Pet Helpers with my 6 surviving pups and 2 other adult dogs that were my pack. I am an alpha female and it was my responsibility to bring them back food if I could find it and protect them. Some really nice folks followed me home one night and made it possible for ALL of us to be rescued. My puppies have all been adopted into wonderful homes and now it's my turn to find my Forever Family. I've been spayed, microchipped, updated on vaccines and tested negative for heartworm and Lyme. I'm house trained and crate trained, but I really don't need a crate...I'm a pretty laid back kind of gal. I do really well with the other foster dogs in my temporary home, but when I meet a new dog I have to be introduced properly and spend some time with them to feel comfortable. I don't like cats, I'll be perfectly honest with you. I love kids and adults though and love to give kisses. I'm easy to leash walk and I really like car rides. If you could please open your heart and home to me, I promise to be loyal and loving. I am fostered in Fairmont, WV, and my adoption fee is $150.00.
