A mongrel, mixed-breed dog

A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

Basenji

African Bush Dog, African Barkless Dog, Ango Angari, Congo Dog, Zande Dog

The Basenji descends from African bush dogs and they're best known for their vocalization. Rather than barking, they 'chortle' or yodel softly. They can also be heard to wail sadly if unhappy, but are normally just very quiet.

The Labrador Retriever is probably America's favorite dog. He is playful (well into his adult years) and is often seen as a lifelong friend.

American Pit Bull Terrier

The American Pit Bull was originally bred for dog fighting and gained a reputation as a vicious animal. Can be a loyal and affectionate pet when trained and socialized properly.

Sheprador

The Sheprador is a cross between an Australian Shepherd and a Labrador Retriever. The Sheprador is a hybrid or designer breed that was developed by crossing Australian Shepherd and a Labrador Retriever. Though the breed was intended to be a 50/50 mix, many of the Sheprador are bred over many generations and may not always be 50% and 50%. The best way to determine the temperament of a mixed breed is to look up all breeds in the cross and know you can get any combination of any of the characteristics found in either breed. We currently do not have more detailed information for this breed.

Border-Aussie

The Border-Aussie is a cross between an Australian Shepherd and a Border Collie. The Border-Aussie is a hybrid or designer breed that was developed by crossing Australian Shepherd and a Border Collie. Though the breed was intended to be a 50/50 mix, many of the Border-Aussie are bred over many generations and may not always be 50% and 50%. Chion

The Chion is a mix between the Chihuahua and Papillon. Both parent breeds tend to be aggressive with other dogs, so this breed should be the only dog in the home.

Labrenees

Pyrador, Pyrelab

Labrenees or Pyrador is the mix of one large-sized dog; the Great Pyrenees and one medium-sized dog; Labrador Retriever. As a hybrid, it has better quality than its parent breeds as the traits and characteristics are mixed. These are very large dogs that are typically more cooperative and trainable than the Great Pyrenees, but more discriminating and naturally protective than the Labrador Retriever.
