Posted Breed: Husky / Husky / Mixed. Alaska is a 6 yr old Siberian Husky who ended up in one of the local shelters. He is 62lbs, but needs to gain some weight as he is on the skinny side. Alaska was used for breeding all of his life until he was surrendered by his breeders recently for having high prey drive with small animals. Alaska is a gentle giant. We think he likely lived his life in a kennel. He is just now getting used to being in a home. He is fearful of loud noises, and will submissively pee if you approach him too quick. But he loves being around other dogs his size. Alaska has a deep husky howl, that can be very loud. When Alaska first came to us he was a big matted up fluff ball! We had a very kind groomer donate their services to help him. Although you should never shave a husky, we didn't have much of a choice in his case. When he was groomed the groomers found a wire stuck on his underside that had been poking through his skin for some time. Thankfully no major damage was done. Even though his is not as fluffy as he once was his fur will grow back long and healthy! In his ideal home he would have an owner who is willing to teach him some basic obedience, and reinforce going potty outside. Alaska is crate trained, and can be crated when not supervised. He can jump a 6ft fence, for this reason he is looking for a home without a fence where he will be leash walked only!! He is a very active boy who needs daily walks. Because of his long hair he will need groomed on a regular basis as well. If you think Alaska is the one for you please fill out an application using this link: https://www.secondchancenc.org/adopt-a-pet/dog-adoption-application/?src=sidebar. Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / American Bulldog / Mixed. Hammie, also known as Hammer, has a wide range of wonderful qualities to him- his soul is deep. He is a young man in a puppy body that often watched over his siblings, a gentle boy with a huge heart. He is 1 sibling out of a litter of five puppies (Sassafras, Sprout, Bashful, Capone - see other listings). Hammie is tender, attentive to his humans, happy go lucky, respectful and has learned to also love his belly rubs and quiet time. He is ready to move forward into the arms of an active, loving family, that has the gentle kindness to match his and the compassion and knowledge to mentor him and guide him into adulthood. Hammer LOVES to play with all dogs of all sizes and plays very nicely with many dogs in his neighborhood! He knows how to sit and wait to be leashed up and unleashed, walks well on the leash and he is house trained and crate trained 100%. Hammers sensitive side will WOO you, his ability to learn so quickly will STUN you. If you are looking for an awesome companion to bring with you on all of your adventures, Hammer would be a wonderful buddy for you. We estimate that he will grow to be anywhere from 40-60 lbs and is a pit lab mix at best guess. His mom is loving, gentle, quiet, eager to please, brilliant and easy going! If you would like to submit an application to adopt Hammer, please do so using this link: https://www.secondchancenc.org/adopt-a-pet/dog-adoption-application/?src=sidebar. If you have additional questions about him, please e-mail the Dog Program Manager at laura@secondchancenc.org.

Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / American Bulldog / Mixed. Sassafras, also known as Sassy, is happy happy happy!!! She takes life with open paws and a smile on her face. She is outgoing, up to all challenges, self entertains if no action is around her, but when there is, she will join in with leaps and bounds. Like her other siblings (Capone, Sprout, Bashful, Hammie-Hammer - see other listings), she has a gentle, cunning side that softens your heart. She is very smart, entertaining and will have you shaking your head wondering what it is she is “currently” up to. As we continue to watch Sassafras blossom, we see such an intelligent sweet girl that will engage with you tenderly, and will eagerly shadow you in all that you do. Her energy level is perfect for the humans that love to go on adventures and have more go- go - go. Her leash training is going well and she rides nicely in the car. She is beautiful, petite, and infectiously happy - what more could anyone want in a pup!? She gets along great with her other dogs and plays nicely. We estimate that she will grow to be anywhere from 40-50 lbs and is a pit lab mix at best guess. Her mom is loving, gentle, quiet, eager to please, brilliant and easy going. If you would like to submit and application for this sweet girl, please do so using this link: https://www.secondchancenc.org/adopt-a-pet/dog-adoption-application/?src=sidebar. Posted Breed: Black and Tan Coonhound / Mixed (medium coat). You may call 919-772-2326 to speak to a counselor for more information prior to your visit. The SPCA has an adoption counseling process for adopters to learn adoption guidelines and adoption options. Hey! Over here! Can we be friends? My name is Savanna, and I''m still getting used to being around new people. I''m sorry if I''m a little shy at first, it just takes me some time to get to know you. So far, I don''t have any favorite toys, so I think you should just get me one of everything! I would like to have a Nylabone so I can keep my teeth nice and shiny clean. That way when I give you kisses my breath is fresh! I would love to have a soft bed to take naps on, and if you''ll let me, I''d like to cuddle up with you on the couch and get love from you. Does this all sound good to you? I think we make a perfect pair. I''m full grown at 49 lbs. *I am currently living at the admission center - please speak with an adoption specialist about meeting me.* ~My adoption fee is $95.00~ Cats? Unknown. Dogs? Unknown. Children? Unknown. Housetrained? Unknown. How did I get here? Owner surrendered to Johnston County Animal Shelter for chasing the pot-bellied pig. Many adoptions will take approximately 1 hour or more. Adoption requirements and tips to speed up the adoption process: Please be able to provide a valid photo I.D. with your current address (If your I.D. does not reflect your current address, bring a piece of mail with your name and address on it) Be able to prove that you are allowed to have a pet where you live (proof of home ownership or a copy of your rental lease including the specific pet policy) Bring along all members of your household, including dogs for an introduction to a new dog. However, we do recommend meeting with an adoption counselor before involving children in the pet selection process. To avoid longer wait times, we strongly recommended that dog-to-dog meetings take place after 1:00pm. Participate in adoption counseling process to learn adoption guidelines and adoption options. Adoption Fees: Dogs & Puppies: $115.00 Cats & Kittens: $95.00 Rabbits: $50.00 Adoption fees include: Basic wellness exam, first vaccinations, spay/neuter surgery, microchipping, deworming and flea preventative. All dogs and puppies have received heartworm preventative, and dogs/puppies over the age of six months have been tested for heartworms. All rabbits are spayed or neutered. Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Labrador Retriever / Mixed. Hello World! I am Rylee Marie, and I am an 8 year old black Labrador mix! I am a very very sweet girl that just wants to be with other dogs and my person/people. I really loveeee food and when I know it is breakfast or dinner time, I do a happy dance and sing for joy! You see, I was rescued by Second Chance after I was taken in to a rural shelter when my dad got in trouble for neglecting me and my fur-siblings. I was getting food very intermittently when I was saved by Animal Control, so now every time I get food I am so grateful! I am crate trained, and actually love my crate, but am still working to be 100% house trained. I am seeking a forever home with at least one other dog, as being with other dogs really gives me a lot of confidence and makes me happy. I am fine with cats, but much prefer the companionship of dogs and humans. Due to lack of socialization, I am a bit shy when I first meet people, but I warm up quickly once I know someone is nice. I have not been tested with children, but suspect that young children would make me nervous, so I'm looking for a home with kids ages 12+ or with adults only. I am spayed, up-to-date on vaccines, microchipped, am current on my monthly heartworm and flea/tick preventatives, and have been dewormed with drontal and albon! My adoption fee is $275. If you would like to apply to adopt me, please fill out an application using this link: https://www.secondchancenc.org/adopt-a-pet/dog-adoption-application/?src=sidebar. Posted Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier / American Staffordshire Terrier / Mixed. Hi! My name is Benny and I am a very lovable 1-2 year old staffy mix. My favorite past times include playing with other dogs, getting belly rubs from my humans, eating, and going for walks! When I first meet new people, I am a little shy, but once I get to know you, I open up and am your very best friend! I am crate trained as well as house trained. I am looking for a forever home with another dog in it, since I am high energy and need a playmate. Having a back yard or a very active owner would be my ideal options. When I was at the shelter, I used to climb out of my kennel and into kennels with other dogs so I could have company and play. I just love other pups so much! I have met a cat before, and I tested well with him as well. I was curious about him, and I wanted to play, but he wasn't in the mood I guess... My foster mom suspects I would be great with kids, and she is willing to test me with them if an interested adopter needs to know! She thinks I might have too much energy for small children, so ideally any kids in the house would be 6 years or older. I am so excited to find my forever home, and with my good looks and lovable personality, I think my perfect match could come along soon

    Miley

    verified

    rescue
    Breed: Labrador Retriever
    Sex: Female Female
    Age: Young
    Location: USA
Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Labrador Retriever / Mixed. Miley is a beautiful purebred chocolate lab who comes complete with a gorgeously thick and glossy fur coat. Her second birthday is coming up on 04/28/18, so Miley is just two thirds of the way through the puppy stage for her breed. Although she still behaves a lot like a puppy, she's most likely reached her adult size- at just 55 pounds she's on the small side of the average female lab, and is a very happy pup with no known health issues. Like most lab puppies, Miley is one ginormous bundle of fun-loving energy! Though energetic, she is actually very easy to exercise if you're willing to spend the time. She loves to run, is incredibly fast, and absolutely adores her beloved red Frisbee- in fact she'll chase it, as it glides across her back yard, and continue retrieving it until she wears her human out! As you might expect, she also loves water, and she'll splash and dash in a kiddie pool, a lake, your bathtub, or just about any body of water you can provide. When she's not running, chasing, retrieving or swimming, Miley loves to exercise her considerable intellect on her interactive toy plastic pickle, which has room to stuff full of treats- she enjoys spending time solving the puzzle of how to liberate every delicious morsel, and feasting on the kibble of her labor. Because she is such an energetic and active pup, though, she really needs a family that can devote the considerable time and energy that she truly requires. However, when Miley finds this kind of a forever family, she'll make every minute spent on her worthwhile because she absolutely LOVES her humans and is exceptionally loyal and affectionate. If love, kisses, and cuddles are your thing, this pup delivers big time! Miley currently sleeps with her mommy and older canine brother, and loves to snuggle all night long. When you're relaxing she will want to be right by your side. Seriously, RIGHT by your side, or in your lap if you'll allow it! Really, no matter where you are, she will want to be there with you, smack dab in the middle of everything- sometimes making you laugh until you cry! Aside from what you already know, there are a few things you might be curious about, in terms of issues we've been working on with Miley, and her background. Because she loves her humans so much, Miley can sometimes be protective. This takes the form of lots of VERY energetic barking, along with an immediate commencement of high jump practice whenever the doorbell rings. She's a little protective of her crate when inside when new people approach, but is not aggressive. She is a bit protective on leash when approached by another dog whose is high energy/in your face. Although Miley is extremely outgoing and friendly most of the time, she can be shy and timid when she's afraid, and sometimes she reacts by barking at whatever she's afraid of; for example, one of those quirky things is seeing animals on TV. Most of the time we've been able to calm her fears, and when properly introduced she's usually warms right up. Miley's foster family has been working on softening these responses, and lots of progress has been made but it's a work in progress. Although she wasn't raised with children, she's been around them during family gatherings- she loves the attention, and there haven't been any problems. This sweetie pie hasn't ever been around kitties, and because she can be timid and fearful with new things, she might give voice to any distress. We feel like she might very well warm up to good natured feline friends, but before considering adoption it might be good to check this out first. Miley has been to dog parks on numerous occasions, and hasn't ever had any problems. She was adopted when she was 5 weeks old, and was raised with two canine siblings; everyone got along quite well with each other. When playing, she tends to take a submissive posture, but she does not exhibit submissive urination. We feel that, if Miley is properly introduced to all of her new family members she'll quickly adapt and become a happy member of her new pack. All in all, we feel like Miley will likely fit right in, no matter what her forever family looks like, and will surely fill her loved ones' lives with fun, excitement, laughter, and love. Miley is spayed, up-to-date on vaccines, microchipped, has been dewormed with drontal and albon, and is current on her monthly heartworm and flea/tick preventatives. Her adoption fee is $275. To fill out an application to adopt Miley, please use this link: https://www.secondchancenc.org/adopt-a-pet/dog-adoption-application/?src=sidebar. If you have additional questions about Miley, please contact the Dog Program Manager at laura@secondchancenc.org. Thank you!

    Breed: Mutt
    Sex: Male Male
    Age: Young
    Location: USA
Posted Breed: Retriever / Retriever / Mixed. Denmark is a wonderful 2 year old adult male, which is a charming Retriever mix that has very soft fur, unique color patterns on his back, and an adorable face! He has lovely eyes, one brown and the other mostly blue, with a touch of brown. He is a very intelligent dog that learns quickly. He is house trained, very agreeable, great in a crate or kennel, and loves nothing more than chasing a ball, romping in the backyard, taking walks, and snuggling on the couch! He is happiest where you are - and will follow you around, gazing up and patiently waiting for a petting or a cuddle. Denmark is fun to take out and about - he's great in a car and will settle down immediately for the ride, and he loves all other dogs and people. When checking into the vet for his neuter, there were about 10 other dogs checking in for day care there, and in the packed waiting room he was wagging his tail and trying to say hello to everyone! He's friendly with girl and boy dogs alike, and is also great with all human friends. His foster home has 2 middle school age kids, and he adores them. He'll flop on the couch to watch a movie, hang out in the playroom waiting for attention, or join them for walks. He is pretty good on a leash aside from being strong and pulling a bit, but with a little more training he's very likely to reduce the pulling. He also needs consistent training in terms of jumping up and mouthing - which he does at times when excited or bored. As mentioned earlier, he is very smart and responds well to consistent training. If you're looking for a dog that will quickly become a loving member of your family, and make you wonder how you ever got along without him, please come meet Denmark! Denmark is neutered, up-to-date on vaccines, microchipped, has been dewormed with drontal and albon, and is current on his monthly heartworm and flea/tick preventatives. His adoption fee is $275. If you would like to submit an adoption application for Denmark, please do so using this link: https://www.secondchancenc.org/adopt-a-pet/dog-adoption-application/?src=sidebar.
