Posted Breed: German Shepherd Dog (medium coat). If you're interested in adopting any SGSR dog, please read about our Adoption Process and fill out an Adoption Application. Visit our website for more information, including Frequently Asked Questions. Meet Fisher!! If Fisher could talk, we are pretty sure he would be making a living as a stand-up comedian. Fisher is a highly intelligent guy with a wisdom beyond his 6+ dog years. And oh, what a sense of humor!! Fisher can be silly and goofy and he keeps his foster mom constantly entertained with his shenanigans. Foster mom says Fisher keeps her on her toes, but not in a bad way, lol. Fisher is a funny guy!! Fisher survived a whole life of neglect and living in deplorable conditions, but you would never know that now. Fisher is a survivor and despite his tragic past, he still loves people. When I say Fisher loves people... I mean he REALLY loves his people!! Fisher is highly intuitive and we believe he can quickly realize the difference between good people and bad people or ill intentions. Fisher is not aggressive, but he is certainly wary of sketchy people... Fisher also recognizes when someone is good to him. Fisher bonds deeply with people who are good to him, and he will be a fiercely loyal companion for the right person or family. Fisher thrives on companionship!! Due to his intelligence, we believe Fisher will do best with an experienced, confident handler who can truly tap into his potential. We believe Fisher will do great as a family pet, but we also believe that Fisher will bond most deeply with his one, primary person. Fisher absolutely adores his foster mom and is a velcro dog. He recognizes when foster mom is not feeling well and comforts her with kisses and couch cuddles. Fisher looks to his foster mom for guidance and he takes comfort in her presence during a scary thunderstorm. Fisher also loves, loves, loves his toys and he is quite the toy hoarder. Fisher does fantastic with all dogs... big and small, and he is very playful with other dogs. We do think that Fisher would do best in a home with no cats and we also feel he would do best in a home with no young/small children due to his size and silly antics. Fisher made it through his heartworm treatment with flying colors and he is now ready to find his forever person or family. He is a total lovebug who is not destructive in the house, potty trained, rides great in the car and is doing great learning leash manners. Fisher would like to find a person or family who will include him in their life activities and spend time with him... cuddling on the couch, park walks, jogging, hiking, camping or just driving around... whatever you do, he wants to be with you. Fisher is being fostered in Tri-Cities, TN area. If you would like more information about Fisher and his story, please contact your adoption coordinator today!! :) Our adoption process consists of a telephone interview, a call to your veterinarian and a home visit. More About German Shepherd Dog Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Visit our website for more information, including Frequently Asked Questions. Hi my name is Lovett! I am a very pretty 8 year old German Shepherd. I have been told that I am a little short for my breed, but who cares right? I LOVE to eat! My favorite snacks are chicken, peanut butter and popcorn... when I find it on the floor. Most of the time I am very chill. I like to take naps, especially on the couch. I have learned not to get on the couch unless I am invited...and, well unless my parents aren’t around. I just can’t help it, because it’s sooo comfy. I get really excited when I get to eat. I know to sit and wait until I am told to eat, but sometimes I get so excited that I forget. I am not food aggressive, and I don’t mind a back rub while I eat my dinner. Sometimes I get so excited to go for a walk that my foster mom and dad have trouble getting my leash on me. I will sit and wait for you to put my leash on, but I like to try to give you high fives while you put it on. I pull a little at the beginning of my walk, but then I remember that I am supposed to heel. I try to lead on my walks, but I heel again when you remind me. I love car rides! I will jump immediately into the car if the door is open. I easily go in my crate, but occasionally you may need to bribe me with a treat. I do well when I am left out at home alone. I am not destructive, but I start to think I am Queen of the house...and nestle in on the couch for a nap. I need someone who understands that a GSD wants and needs rules and boundaries. My foster parents think that I am wonderful and they tell me so all the time. I don’t like thunderstorms and I’m terrified of the vacuum. When I get scared, I try to hide behind my current Alpha human or anywhere away from the vacuum. I have been through OLK9 Beginner Training. Once I acknowledge you as my Alpha human I will try to stick close by your side, but sometimes I do become curious and wander off. I would suggest a leash or fenced in yard to keep me safe. I get along well with other dogs of all sizes, as long as they are nice to me. I have met some cats, and I ignored them until they hissed at me. Then, I barked at them. They are weird hairy creatures...and they smell funny. I don’t bark much, but I do like to let my parents know when someone is at the door, or in the driveway. I like people and I'm very sweet. I am being fostered in Garner, NC. If you think I would be the perfect fit for you, please contact your adoption coordinator or fill out an app at www.southeastgermanshepherdrescue.com Our adoption process consists of a telephone interview, a call to your veterinarian and a home visit. My original owner purchased me from a breeder but had to find me a new home due to financial hardships. I am about 82 lbs and very athletic. I love to go on car rides and walks/runs every opportunity that I get. I’m very protective of my house and will alert to strange noises or people. No cats or small dogs for me but I love to play with medium to large dogs. I would be happy to have older children in my forever home but no young children please...I'm afraid of them. I love to chase (especially tennis balls), toys, cats, squirrels, lights ...just about anything that moves. I have been working on my confidence since I'm a little timid in new situations. Because of this, I prefer to be around older children. I walk very well on a leash and know my commands, even a few in German. I am completely housebroken and love to sleep in my crate or dog bed but I do have a tendency to sneak on the furniture when no one is home...don't tell my foster! I am very energetic and full of life and if you have treats I will be your best friend. Are you my new family? I'm being fostered in Elon, NC! Visit our website for more information, including Frequently Asked Questions. Hello! My name is Mallory, am about 2 to 2 1/2 years old and weigh around 60 pounds. I am a smaller girl in size but massive in personality! I had a rough start when I first came into the SGSR. I was found in Memphis and was believed to have been hit by a car. I suffered a broken rear leg and have permanent radial nerve damage to one of my front legs. My back leg has healed, and while I get around fine, I just limp a bit. My front paw will always be curled in and I will probably never regain feeling from the elbow down. I do, however, use my front leg to hold my bones or favorite toys. I LOVE to play. I play pretty much all day. My foster sisters, both GSDs, are the best play buddies. I love to ‘talk’, and while other dogs may take this the wrong way, it’s completely harmless. My foster mom tells me all the time that I am smarter than her two other German Shepherd Dogs, but I am not allowed to tell them that. I walk really well on a leash but will take an occasional break as all that walking occasionally wears me out a little. I know how to sit, stay (sort of), and I wait to eat my food until you give me the okay. I LOVE people! I am a bit cautious at first but will bond really quickly with my humans. My foster mom has a cat, and I don’t know what it is about that cat, but I can’t get enough of it. My mom thinks I would not do good in a house with a cat or small pet like a bunny because I am just way too curious. I would do great with a confident fur sibling about my size or larger. I LOVE kids and would do great with them if they are old enough to know how to properly interact with me. I do well in a crate and will let you know when I need to go outside to go potty. My personality is HUGE and SASSY! I make funny noises and my foster mom laughs all the time at me. I love belly rubs and snuggling in bed with you. If you think I am the dog for you, let me know! I am ready for my forever home!! If you’re interested in making me part of your family, contact your adoption coordinator. Visit our website for more information, including Frequently Asked Questions. Meet Susan, mom to the Irish litter! She and her babies were found on the side of the road and brought to a rural animal shelter. Susan was an exceptional mama, but those days are over! She has been spayed is ready for her forever home! She is around 2-3 years old and 55 lbs so she is more of a “compact” pup. Her foster dad is confident she's a GSD/Lab mix. Susan is house trained, crate trained, reasonable on a leash, rides well in a car, takes treats gently and has gained some much-needed weight since weaning her pups. Susan was determined to get her pre-puppy body back and through a rigorous regiment of Yoga, wrestling and ball chasing, you can't even tell she had puppies. Very smart, bonds quickly, learns instantly, wants to know and be part of everything going on and is very sweet, lovable and cuddly. She LOVES playing with the young male GSD in her foster home and is good with other dogs. She loves to play with toys and has learned to fetch, but only with the Orange Ball. Anything else is beneath her. Susan will need someone who can slowly expose her to the world, as she is still unsure of new situations. She also needs someone who can take the time to let her know what they expect of her because if this uncertainty. With calm guidance, she has already become a much more confident and happy dog. With continued obedience and patience, she is going to blossom quickly. She may be small, but she takes her job of guard dog very seriously! In the house, she will require proper introductions to new people. Susan has a very high prey drive so she cannot go to a house with cats and she will require a fenced in yard. Susan is being fostered in Newport News, VA Our adoption process consists of a telephone interview, a call to your veterinarian and a home visit. He is just the sweetest and so much deserves his own family. Here is his bio My name is Oakley! I am a stunning three year old GSD male that weighs 80lbs. I love people and wonderful around children! My foster mom says if I could talk , boy would have an amazing story to tell. My foster mom & dad call me the Survivor! I have survived many odds against me. Not only did I survive getting out of a kill shelter , I went through Heart worm treatment and survived an accident. My terrible accident left me with a one inch stair step fractured back. Vet told me I should have not survived such an event but I did! When I first came to my foster home, I hopped around and had trouble with steps but after months of healing I walk, run and have no issues with steps! The accident however left me incontinent. Which means I can not hold my bowels or urine. My foster mom keeps me clean and dry which is important and my new family will need to do the same. I currently walk around free range. Wearing diapers could cause issues like infections so my foster family found it best for me to be free range. I sleep in a stable like environment in shavings with my own AC. I don't mind this as long as I can play with my fellow dogs during the day. Currently I only wear diapers if I travel in the car to the vet. I might add I am a very good travel buddy! I enjoy the sun and rolling around in the backyard searching for passing squirrels, birds and playing fetch. I am so excited in the mornings I do nonstop circles until I get out the door. I am mostly caught sleeping on my back with my feet in the air. What can I say I am a happy boy! I am a very sweet and not a very good guard dog . I just love everyone! I only bark at cats and I do get a little excited when they are around. I get along with other dogs but will bark before intro. I do that because I'm excited to meet them! I can not wait to meet my very special forever family that will be there for me during the day and help me with the special needs I have. My ideal home would be a farm environment or someone that could give me the space I need to walk around and be around other animals free range and be me. I have a long life to live and so much love to give. Our adoption process consists of a telephone interview, a call to your veterinarian and a home visit. Visit our website for more information, including Frequently Asked Questions. Hello SGSR friends. My name is Shari and this is my sidekick Lambchop. We are best buddies and are in need of a forever home. I am 5 year old female German Shepherd and love to play with Lambchop, who is a 5 year old Jack Russell Terrier mix. We race each other around, play peekaboo under the bed and wrestle a lot. It's our favorite thing to do besides go on walks. We came to SGSR from a hoarding situation and were initially separated. This was horrible for me! I didn't want to eat or play, but one day they walked Lampchop by my kennel and I went bezerk! I was sooo excited to see him! They decided to put us together and I got back to my old self in no time. Needless to say we come as a package deal. Basically you get the best of both worlds: a pretty GSD, if I do say so myself, and an adorable lap dog. Due to our situation we didn't get a lot of training so we would definitely need some to polish off our skills. We do great on leash but when I see another dog, I want to go say hello. I'm not aggressive just super friendly. Lamchop could care less about the other dogs. We are also crated as we can't be trusted alone in the house just yet, but training will help with that. Lambchop loves to steal socks, not sure why, but at least he doesn't chew on them. He just rolls on them. He also has dragged off a shoe or two in the beginning - he's such a fashionista! We also LOVE to give kisses and be with our humans! We just can't help ourselves because we are so happy to be in a better place. We are great with kids but prefer 5 and up since we are active and might knock a younger one down when we are playing. Cats - umm preferably not. I'm not sure how we would be. We really need to be the only animals in the house. I have gotten protective over Lambi in the past - nothing bad, I just don't want to share him. We have two foster brothers (two legged ones) that adore us and we play catch with them and go on walks. We sleep next to each other on a bed on the floor in the room with our foster mom. OH, I cant forget to mention I love the hose in the backyard! I'm sure that's not a surprise but yep, water is AWESOME! I'm sure I would love a lake or something like that but I don't remember if I have been to one. I helped my foster mom one day while she was doing yard work by trying to get the leaf blower - wind in the mouth is the best!! Lambi prefers to stay away from loud things like that, though. We are adorable, funny and super sweet. I do bark when people come around the house and sometimes Lambi chimes in, but not often. He leaves that job up to me lol! We do love to follow our foster mom around the house; upstairs, downstairs doesn't matter. All in all we are wonderful and would love to find an active forever home. If you think you can offer us our forever home, please work with your adoption coordinator. If you are not yet approved to adopt but are interested in adopting us, please fill out an application at southeastgermanshepherdrescue.com. We are being fostered near Charlotte, NC. Visit our website for more information, including Frequently Asked Questions. Meet Daisey! Daisey is an 8 year old, 80 pound, female GSD. She is good around older children; she likes adults and has no preference between men and women. She currently lives peacefully with a cat; and a small dog. She obeys basic commands (come, sit, stay, crate), and is great companion and watchdog. Someone is typically home with Daisey during the day. Historically she has been home alone, not in her crate, for up to 6 to 7 hours with no issue. She has never damaged anything in our home when left alone. She is crate trained and has been in both a plastic and woven crate with a pad. She sleeps on the floor in our bedroom at night. Daisey is very loyal and protective, and takes her watchdog job very seriously. While this makes her a very good watchdog, it also means that she barks at all humans and animals in her territory or who enter the home for the first time. She is skittish around young children, especially toddlers, and will bark and growl if they approach the fence in our yard. Like many Shepherds, she gets anxious when she does not know what is expected of her. She is also scared of thunderstorms. Daisey loves to go on walks and on runs. She has a lot of energy! She likes to fetch balls and sticks and be outside. Otherwise, she likes to be with her human pack. Daisey has a medical condition called pannus which requires her to take inexpensive eye drops daily. Daisey is being fostered near Greenville, NC! Visit our website for more information, including Frequently Asked Questions. Help! I’m a puppy trapped in a 14-year old body! My name is Shep, and I am just about the sweetest thing you can imagine. I love to chase the ball, play tug, carry and play with the jolly ball, follow you around, be brushed, be scratched/petted, and want to share whatever you are eating.I am housetrained. I pull on a leash and am away stronger that you think I’d be. My mom walks me on a pinch collar and I do well on that, especially when I see other dogs. Sometimes we walk up to 2 miles at a time (up to 3 miles a day). I get along great with other dogs (in the house/yard), and people of all ages.I am not neutered, and am told that I’m too old at this point to risk it. I have cataracts, and havemedicine for that. I also have some mild/moderate hip dysplasia, but I don’t let that slow medown. For the first week at my foster mom’s house, I didn’t want to use the back steps (my nails were a little long, and foster mom is working on this), so I just jumped off and on the deck (about 20 inches). I can get up and down the carpeted stairs in my foster mom’s house without a problem. Sometime when my hips are tired, I will sleep downstairs at night. My foster mom has a nice orthopedic dog bed upstairs and downstairs for wherever I decide to sleep. I always sleep through the night, and have done fine in the house on the days when mom has to work longer hours.Don’t think that because I am old, that I’m quiet! I have a lot of personality/spunk and want tomake sure that you know I’m there. If I think you need to pay attention to me, I’ll just sit there and bark. With my cataracts, I sometimes think that I see things outside, so I’ll bark just in case.I am being fostered in Yorktown, VA. Visit our website for more information, including Frequently Asked Questions. I am an 12-year-old sweetheart. I love to play with my fur siblings, both male and female. I will chase bugs with them all day long. I get along with all dogs, big or little. I will bark at things that I think should not be here, but am easily corrected. All you need to do is ask me nicely, I will do anything you want. I am doing better on a leash, I really don't need one as I stay very close to my Mom . I love to be brushed and will sit patiently while you brush. I will chase a ball until your arm gets tired - most the time I bring it back to you. I've shown interest in a cat, but only because everybody else did. I think I would be okay with a dog savvy cat. My mom can test me, I will do anything for her. I will walk with you, run with you, play ball with you, or lay with you and watch a movie. I will be anything you want me to be. Don't you want to make me your own? Older kids would be fine, young children are too active for me! Our adoption process consists of a telephone interview, a call to your veterinarian and a home visit.
