Posted Breed: German Shepherd Dog (medium coat). If you're interested in adopting any SGSR dog, please read about our Adoption Process and fill out an Adoption Application. Visit our website for more information, including Frequently Asked Questions. This is Jake, a six year old Bi colored German Shepherd. He's most likely been an outside penned dog for the majority of his life with little training, although he has come a long way and has transitioned well to indoor life. Jake likes to think that he is an alpha dog with a moderate energy level. When Jake entered the rescue, he was heartworm positive, but has completely recovered with flying colors. Jake has a great disposition as he is very playful, intelligent and curious. He gets along well with his older foster fur sibling but tends to want to be the center of attention. He's not been around cats that we know of but will chase and bark at them if he sees one, or they happen to wander in the yard. He is very food motivated and gets really excited at feeding time and love treats. Jake has been working on his manners and learning the rules of being in the house. Sitting, waiting and shaking before eating. Sitting & waiting to go out and come in from outside and loading in the truck, and some basic obedience training. Jake is now fully housebroken and crate trained, although he doesn't need to be crated. Jake would do best with a family that will develop his unlimited potential. Jake has not been around small children but is a loving dog that does not jump on people or chew on hands. Jake loves to go for walks but needs to learn not to pull on his leash. Jake likes playing with and tearing fuzz off of tennis balls, chewing on large hard bones or Nylabones and will floss his teeth with a pull rope. Jake will also need a fenced yard so he doesn't get out and take himself for a walk. Jake would do best with a submissive male or female dog or as the only dog in the house with people who are willing to help him realize his full potential. Jake is being fostered in Fayetteville, NC. Please contact your adoption coordinator if you think you are a good fit for Jake. Our adoption process consists of a telephone interview, a call to your veterinarian and a home visit. If you have any questions about the adoption process please contact sgsrescue@gmail.com .

More About German Shepherd Dog Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: German Shepherd Dog (medium coat). If you're interested in adopting any SGSR dog, please read about our Adoption Process and fill out an Adoption Application. Visit our website for more information, including Frequently Asked Questions. ~~Hi! My name is Tilley. I am a 6 year old German Shepherd with a big heart and tons of life in left in me. I live with my humans and 3 furry things called cats. They don't bother me and I don't bother them. Mom and Dad tried to get me to play fetch, but I just watched one of the cats do it for me. I have more fun watching her chase the ball and bring it back. We don’t play together, but we do peacefully co-exist with each other and that makes the whole household a fun and safe place to be. I am very affectionate and will give you a ton of kisses, if you give me the opportunity. I am very attached to all of my humans and am a textbook velcro GSD. I came to my humans as a foster when my original human daddy passed away suddenly. Boy, my world was lost for a while. I came to my foster home with little, if any, formal training, but they sent me to school and I have mastered a number of commands. I am still a work in progress, but with love and support, I have become a more relaxed dog. I am really smart and I pick up on direction very quickly and do very well with it. I like to chase me some small critters, so I make the squirrels, chipmunks, possums and flying squirrels earn the meals they get from my humans’ bird feeder. I do not chase deer. They are just too fast and no fun. I am not much of a barker and mind my manners pretty well. Guys will like me, because I REALLY like riding in trucks (shotgun, of course) and I belch. Now, if I could only learn how to drink beer and scratch myself… Belly rubs are a real favorite for me. Just give me a belly rub and we are friends forever! If you don’t rub my belly enough, I will let you know pretty quickly. I've not lived with any little humans, but I'm fine with the ones I've met. They are kind of cute. I do NOT like door bells and the garbage man’s backing-up signal upsets me. I can become very protective of my humans when new people come to our home. I will need proper and supervised introductions until I know they are A-OK. I have NO food aggression, but I do miss my mom and dad when they leave the house. So, I would appreciate it if I find a family that someone works from home or retired, so I can be with you ALL the time. I am house-trained and have learned to walk VERY well with a leash. My favorite things to do are to go on walks, catch doggie treats tossed in my direction, chill out in the yard and spend time with my humans. I need some Shepherd people with lots of love and take the time to show me how to meet new people and dogs, so I know they are not going to hurt me or my humans. I am a very good dog and will always love and protect you-I promise! Won't you please give me a furever home? I am currently being fostered in Glade Valley, NC, which sits in the mountains near the VA border. If you think Tilley would be a great fit for your family, please fill out an application or contact your adoption coordinator. Right now I live with my foster mom, foster sister and five foster fur-siblings. Yes, FIVE! Three of them are littler dogs than me and the other two are adorable cats. I get along with them all so much that I’m usually playing with more than one at the same time. It didn’t take me long to break out of my shell here because I just love everyone I meet and I love, love, LOVE to play. My foster mom and sister have grown attached to me but they tell me that it was just way too easy to fall in love with me. I like to be at the side of either of them when they are home and they always tell me how great I behave in my crate. I’ll admit, I don’t like going in it as readily as the others go in theirs but once I’m there, I’m okay. They love to tell me how wonderful I am because even though I am very playful, I can be very calm, too. I am housebroken and am not destructive when left alone. Like I said in the very beginning, I love to hug. But I promise, I am very gentle about it! I try my very best to not tackle, even when I am very happy to see you. I know how to sit and lay on command and I really love to give my paw. I happen to think I am very smart, too. Amara

      Breed: German Shepherd Dog
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Young
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: German Shepherd Dog (long coat). If you're interested in adopting any SGSR dog, please read about our Adoption Process and fill out an Adoption Application. Visit our website for more information, including Frequently Asked Questions. When I think of a German Shepherd Dog, I think of strength, courage, determination, and loyalty. These are all off the qualities that Amara has. If it weren't for her strength and courage, she wouldn't be here today. Amara was run over by a car in Egypt, when she was only a few months old, and left to fend for herself. SGSR was asked to help Amara, readily agreed and the rescue in Cairo arranged to get her to the United States. Everyone was in agreement that Amara would have better opportunities here in America. The damage that done to her rear legs is not repairable, but Amara doesn't let anything hold her back from living life. She has no idea anything is wrong with her legs and gets around beautifully in her wheelchair. Amara thinks she is the queen of her castle, and I believe her strong personality and determination is what kept her alive during her weakest moments. Amara also has a minor heart condition that shouldn't cause any issues in the future, but her heart should be checked out yearly at her routine vet visit. Amara loves other dogs and would do best in a one-level home. This social butterfly hates to be left out of any situation. She prefers to scoot around without her chair while she is in the house, and let me be the first to tell you this girl is fast as lightning! Don't let her injury fool you; she will be the first one in the kitchen at meal time. Amara is a sweet girl that loves to snuggle with her people and other dogs. Her favorite things are a soft, comfortable bed, and toys that squeak. And food…oh, how she loves food! Amara will need a little extra help when it comes to potty time…you have to allow for a few extra minutes to get in her wheelchair to potty. She is about 6 months old, up to date on vaccinations and spayed. Because she was so tiny after being injured, her rescuers in Egypt kept her in the cat room, so she’s fine with having a feline friend. If you are interested in making Amara part of your family, please contact your adoption coordinator. If you are not yet approved (and live in VA, NC or MD), you can find our adoption application here: www.southeastgermanshepherdrescue.com. Please be sure to read the FAQ section! Amara is being fostered in Portsmouth, Virginia. Our adoption process consists of a telephone interview, a call to your veterinarian and a home visit. Visit our website for more information, including Frequently Asked Questions. Hi there! Bonita is my name and chasing tennis balls is my game! I am a 7 year old, solid black, gorgeous, female GSD. My original owner purchased me from a breeder but had to find me a new home due to financial hardships. I am about 82 lbs and very athletic. I love to go on car rides and walks/runs every opportunity that I get. I’m very protective of my house and will alert to strange noises or people. No cats or small dogs for me but I love to play with medium to large dogs. I would be happy to have older children in my forever home but no young children please...I'm afraid of them. I love to chase (especially tennis balls), toys, cats, squirrels, lights ...just about anything that moves. I have been working on my confidence since I'm a little timid in new situations. Because of this, I prefer to be around older children. I walk very well on a leash and know my commands, even a few in German. I am completely housebroken and love to sleep in my crate or dog bed but I do have a tendency to sneak on the furniture when no one is home...don't tell my foster! I am very energetic and full of life and if you have treats I will be your best friend. Are you my new family? I'm being fostered in Elon, NC! Visit our website for more information, including Frequently Asked Questions. Hello! My name is Mallory, am about 2 to 2 1/2 years old and weigh around 60 pounds. I am a smaller girl in size but massive in personality! I had a rough start when I first came into the SGSR. I was found in Memphis and was believed to have been hit by a car. I suffered a broken rear leg and have permanent radial nerve damage to one of my front legs. My back leg has healed, and while I get around fine, I just limp a bit. My front paw will always be curled in and I will probably never regain feeling from the elbow down. I do, however, use my front leg to hold my bones or favorite toys. I LOVE to play. I play pretty much all day. My foster sisters, both GSDs, are the best play buddies. I love to ‘talk’, and while other dogs may take this the wrong way, it’s completely harmless. My foster mom tells me all the time that I am smarter than her two other German Shepherd Dogs, but I am not allowed to tell them that. I walk really well on a leash but will take an occasional break as all that walking occasionally wears me out a little. I know how to sit, stay (sort of), and I wait to eat my food until you give me the okay. I LOVE people! I am a bit cautious at first but will bond really quickly with my humans. My foster mom has a cat, and I don’t know what it is about that cat, but I can’t get enough of it. My mom thinks I would not do good in a house with a cat or small pet like a bunny because I am just way too curious. I would do great with a confident fur sibling about my size or larger. I LOVE kids and would do great with them if they are old enough to know how to properly interact with me. I do well in a crate and will let you know when I need to go outside to go potty. My personality is HUGE and SASSY! I make funny noises and my foster mom laughs all the time at me. I love belly rubs and snuggling in bed with you. If you think I am the dog for you, let me know! I am ready for my forever home!! If you’re interested in making me part of your family, contact your adoption coordinator. Visit our website for more information, including Frequently Asked Questions. Meet Susan, mom to the Irish litter! She and her babies were found on the side of the road and brought to a rural animal shelter. Susan was an exceptional mama, but those days are over! She has been spayed is ready for her forever home! She is around 2-3 years old and 55 lbs so she is more of a “compact” pup. Her foster dad is confident she's a GSD/Lab mix. Susan is house trained, crate trained, reasonable on a leash, rides well in a car, takes treats gently and has gained some much-needed weight since weaning her pups. Susan was determined to get her pre-puppy body back and through a rigorous regiment of Yoga, wrestling and ball chasing, you can't even tell she had puppies. Very smart, bonds quickly, learns instantly, wants to know and be part of everything going on and is very sweet, lovable and cuddly. She LOVES playing with the young male GSD in her foster home and is good with other dogs. She loves to play with toys and has learned to fetch, but only with the Orange Ball. Anything else is beneath her. Susan will need someone who can slowly expose her to the world, as she is still unsure of new situations. She also needs someone who can take the time to let her know what they expect of her because if this uncertainty. With calm guidance, she has already become a much more confident and happy dog. With continued obedience and patience, she is going to blossom quickly. She may be small, but she takes her job of guard dog very seriously! In the house, she will require proper introductions to new people. Susan has a very high prey drive so she cannot go to a house with cats and she will require a fenced in yard. Susan is being fostered in Newport News, VA Our adoption process consists of a telephone interview, a call to your veterinarian and a home visit. Visit our website for more information, including Frequently Asked Questions. Meet Tucker! Tucker is approximately 8 years old and he is a very well mannered gentleman. Tucker is housebroken and crate trained although he can be trusted to be free in the house when his humans are away. He seems to have had a rough life so far, his teeth are worn all the way down and we are working on putting some weight on him since he is a bit thin. Tucker is an awesome dog and gets along well with the other dogs, is good with kids and always loves for someone to pet him. He is a bit shy when meeting new people, especially men, but warms up quickly. His current fur siblings are a very grumpy Pomeranian, a miniature pinscher and a female GSD. Although he gets along well with the little dogs, he does seem to have a prey drive, so it would probably be best if he is in a house with smaller dogs that they are on the calmer side and also an owner that will show him his place in the pack. Tucker has had a couple sleepovers in homes that have cats and was a bit too interested, so we think it would probably be best if there were no cats in his forever home. So far Tucker is not too interested in playing with toys, but he does love a good pig ear or bully stick. He also loves to go for walks and car rides. He is just an all around sweet dog that has just the right amount of energy to go out and do things but also just chill on the floor next to his human. Please consider giving Tucker a forever home where he can be loved and spoiled. If you are interested in meeting Tucker, please contact your adoption coordinator. He is just the sweetest and so much deserves his own family. Here is his bio My name is Oakley! I am a stunning three year old GSD male that weighs 80lbs. I love people and wonderful around children! My foster mom says if I could talk , boy would have an amazing story to tell. My foster mom & dad call me the Survivor! I have survived many odds against me. Not only did I survive getting out of a kill shelter , I went through Heart worm treatment and survived an accident. My terrible accident left me with a one inch stair step fractured back. Vet told me I should have not survived such an event but I did! When I first came to my foster home, I hopped around and had trouble with steps but after months of healing I walk, run and have no issues with steps! The accident however left me incontinent. Which means I can not hold my bowels or urine. My foster mom keeps me clean and dry which is important and my new family will need to do the same. I currently walk around free range. Wearing diapers could cause issues like infections so my foster family found it best for me to be free range. I sleep in a stable like environment in shavings with my own AC. I don't mind this as long as I can play with my fellow dogs during the day. Currently I only wear diapers if I travel in the car to the vet. I might add I am a very good travel buddy! I enjoy the sun and rolling around in the backyard searching for passing squirrels, birds and playing fetch. I am so excited in the mornings I do nonstop circles until I get out the door. I am mostly caught sleeping on my back with my feet in the air. What can I say I am a happy boy! I am a very sweet and not a very good guard dog . I just love everyone! I only bark at cats and I do get a little excited when they are around. I get along with other dogs but will bark before intro. I do that because I'm excited to meet them! I can not wait to meet my very special forever family that will be there for me during the day and help me with the special needs I have. My ideal home would be a farm environment or someone that could give me the space I need to walk around and be around other animals free range and be me. I have a long life to live and so much love to give. Our adoption process consists of a telephone interview, a call to your veterinarian and a home visit. Visit our website for more information, including Frequently Asked Questions. Help! I’m a puppy trapped in a 14-year old body! My name is Shep, and I am just about the sweetest thing you can imagine. I love to chase the ball, play tug, carry and play with the jolly ball, follow you around, be brushed, be scratched/petted, and want to share whatever you are eating.I am housetrained. I pull on a leash and am away stronger that you think I’d be. My mom walks me on a pinch collar and I do well on that, especially when I see other dogs. Sometimes we walk up to 2 miles at a time (up to 3 miles a day). I get along great with other dogs (in the house/yard), and people of all ages.I am not neutered, and am told that I’m too old at this point to risk it. I have cataracts, and havemedicine for that. I also have some mild/moderate hip dysplasia, but I don’t let that slow medown. For the first week at my foster mom’s house, I didn’t want to use the back steps (my nails were a little long, and foster mom is working on this), so I just jumped off and on the deck (about 20 inches). I can get up and down the carpeted stairs in my foster mom’s house without a problem. Sometime when my hips are tired, I will sleep downstairs at night. My foster mom has a nice orthopedic dog bed upstairs and downstairs for wherever I decide to sleep. I always sleep through the night, and have done fine in the house on the days when mom has to work longer hours.Don’t think that because I am old, that I’m quiet! I have a lot of personality/spunk and want tomake sure that you know I’m there. If I think you need to pay attention to me, I’ll just sit there and bark. Posted Breed: German Shepherd Dog (medium coat). If you're interested in adopting any SGSR dog, please read about our Adoption Process and fill out an Adoption Application. Visit our website for more information, including Frequently Asked Questions. I am an 12-year-old sweetheart. I love to play with my fur siblings, both male and female. I will chase bugs with them all day long. I get along with all dogs, big or little. I will bark at things that I think should not be here, but am easily corrected. All you need to do is ask me nicely, I will do anything you want. I am doing better on a leash, I really don't need one as I stay very close to my Mom . I love to be brushed and will sit patiently while you brush. I will chase a ball until your arm gets tired - most the time I bring it back to you. I've shown interest in a cat, but only because everybody else did. I think I would be okay with a dog savvy cat. My mom can test me, I will do anything for her. I will walk with you, run with you, play ball with you, or lay with you and watch a movie. I will be anything you want me to be. Don't you want to make me your own? Older kids would be fine, young children are too active for me! Our adoption process consists of a telephone interview, a call to your veterinarian and a home visit.
