Posted Breed: Great Dane. Rocket is still a puppy at heart. She is a little fearful of people at first but warms up quickly. She loves playing with the other Danes, usually leading them in a round of zoomies. She is house trained and crate trained. She knows basic commands. Rocket does not like smaller dogs or cats and would do well in a home with maybe one large dog. She needs to go to school to be all that she can be. Full of snuggles and kisses and ready for a foster or forever home.

Great Dane

A.K.A. : Deutsche Dogge, German Mastiff
Overview: The Great Dane is a huge dog with a sweet and gentle nature. He needs a lot of space for exercise, though he can be very calm and well-behaved indoors.
Breed Group: Working
Weight (lbs): 100-120
Height (in): male: 30-32, female: 28-30
Colors: Brindle, black-masked fawn, blue, black, harlequin (white with irregular black patches). Mantle (black and white)
Coat: Hair is short and smooth.
Character: Great Danes are affectionate, calm, loyal, and intelligent. Although they do not bark very much, they make great watch dogs.
Temperament: This breed gets along well with children, other dogs, and most household pets. They are usually wary around strangers, but are good with welcomed visitors.
Care: The Great Dane should be grooming with a rubber brush during periods of shedding.
Training: This breed grows quite large, so for an early lesson he should be trained not to pull on the leash. He's quite eager to please, so a proper approach should provide great results.
Activity: The Great Dane needs a lot of exercise, including being able to run freely off the leash in open countryside.
Country of Origin: Germany
Health Issue: The breed is prone to hip dysplasia, bloat, tumors, heart disease, and tail injuries.
Life Expectancy: 6-8

More About Great Dane Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Great Dane. Marley is currently at the farm, here's a note from our kennel manager: When first coming into the farm Marley was extremely fearful of not only the kennel environment but also the other Danes. If was easy to tell that he was not sure of himself but still felt the need to try and protect maybelle. He stood over her and barked at any other dogs that came near. The first introduction to the other Danes was too much for the first day. After about a day and half there fear started to fade and their confidence was really starting to show. Marley became very affectionate and wanting to stay close to me. After getting used to our routine in the kennel, I thought it would be best to do a second introduction and this time they will have the confidence to meet the other Danes. After the slow intro and a few hours of just dog time they all quickly became excepting of the new members. Marley is still insecure and needs a steady strong person to show him it will be ok. Keep him on a routine and introduce new things slowly he will be a great companion. I am working with him on potty trailing so any foster or adopter should understand he is re learning that skill and they will need to work with him on it. They could use treats for a reward on potty training but just saying good boy or verbal reward will work just as well for him. I am also working with him on boundaries he can be clingy when walking or just next to you. He pushes to hard for attention which can cause the human to fall over ,so for safety reasons were working on this. He has improved at getting more attention at appropriate times just in this past week. He is a sweet boy

Posted Breed: Great Dane. Maybelle is at our farm, here is what our kennel manager has to say about her: Maybelle has become such a happy girl. She Loves attention and toys. She can also be overly affectionate with licking.Once she starts licking you its hard for her to stop. She has so much more confidence now and runs in our back yard almost bouncing around happily. Maybelle gets along well with the other male Danes. She has a great spirit and is still a bit sensitive to the human interaction. Anyone working with her should pay attention to the tone of voice they use because talking harshly could impact her confidence. While running outside she tends to run at full force and if your not paying attention she may just run to close past you. As well for safety issues we are working on this so she does not knock anyone down . Other wise a Happy girl very easy going. She would do well with a someone that is soft spoken and could handle her energy level.

Posted Breed: Great Dane. 2/12/18 From Venus' Foster Mom: Venus is a very sweet dog! She loves to cuddle, spend time with her family, and going on car rides. House trained and can sit, stay, come, speak, and is learning to play fetch. Sometimes, she is a little anxious when being introduced to new things but warms up quickly in the right environment. She is much attuned to people’s emotions and will reflect the feelings in the room. She needs to go to a calm home with an experienced trainer, who is comfortable controlling environment. Her surrendering owner suggested that Venus be in a home with no other pets because she guards her toys and her things but she has been doing SO WELL with the other dane and lab in the home. She's opened up and has become playful and happy to be around them. She is doing well with meeting strangers, has met a few other dogs and it has gone well, along with walking on a leash in public! 12/20/17 Venus has been returned to the rescue for a couple reasons. First, her adoptive mom felt that she was allergic to Venus and nothing is helping her tolerate Venus. Also, Venus has become more reactive when on a leash, and more protective around the home. For these reasons it was decided that Venus needed to be returned to the rescue to find another, more secure home for her. Hello my name is Venus. I would be an amazing addition to the right people who cherish my grace & devotion & have no other animals. I am very intelligent and love to learn new things and please you. I love the outdoors and walk in my harness and I love home and my people. I love to play with my squeaky toys and chase squeaky balls, I love earning my breakfast and supper because I know sit, stay, down, shake, speak. I love treats but the best for me is a rub on my head and ears, & kiss between my eyes and let me know that I am the best dog.

Posted Breed: Great Dane. Lola comes to us from Oklahoma via the Anti Cruelty Society of Chicago. She is a beautiful girl but will need a little training. We've noticed that Lola seems to have an issue with some men. It may take her some time to warm up to certain men, but we can't predict who she will like, and who she won't like.
