Posted Breed: Greyhound. Ponda's Outcast whose call name at the track was "Castor" is a very handsome boy who we all fell in love with. He's affectionate and takes direction well. He walks great on leash as he trots nicely beside his person like a show dog. He's a leaner and seems even tempered. He was described by the folks in Florida as "a nice, middle of the road boy"--we agree and were impressed with Outcast. He is 3 years and although he loves people, no cats, please. 10/25/2016 Inmate Handler Update: "I would adopt outcast for many reasons. One being that he is loving. another is that he is loyal. All of things that someone looks for in a dog.. He is also always happy to see me which adds to the reasons as why I would adopt him." Inmate Handler Update 1/13/2016 "Outcast is a great dog for many reasons: He loves to play; he can sit on command; and he gives paw. He does not like to be neglected and is always ready to cuddle. He does not use the bathroom indoors and is ecstatic from the moment you walk out the front door with him for a walk. Outcast would be a lovely addtion to most families."

Country of Origin: United Kingdom
Health Issue: This breed is prone to bloat, hip dysplasia, and ear infections. They may also have entropion, where the eyelids turn inward.

More About Greyhound Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

His foster reports that he is very mellow, good on stairs and is housetrained. He walks nicely on leash. He would do best with older children. If you have another greyhound and are thinking about adding a very handsome boy, contact me, Linda Lyman at 732-356-4370. ________________________________________________________________ Original Posting RJ's Rotini is a gorgeous boy with a stunning face. He is a laid back, friendly boy. He seems to be a "go-along" boy who is happy to please. Rotini was unfazed by all of the goings on and his new environment. He walks nicely on leash. Rotini is a nice sized boy--not too small and not too big. He is 2 year old and cat tolerant with supervision.

Posted Breed: Greyhound. VIP Songbird is a pretty, petite girl. She is very sweet and endearing. She is a little reserved at first but comes around and warms up. She then loves affection and attention. She may do best with another greyhound to give her some confidence and companionship. Songbird is 2 years old and cat tolerant with supervision. Foster Update 3/22/2018: Oh, my what a sweet and funny girl!! She does take a few days to be comfortable but once she is she just enjoys life and her routine. She gets along great with my other greyhounds and blends right in with them. She loves to eat and has a funny bark- bark when I am getting their food ready--she was aptly named "Songbird"!! She wants to please and looks to me and the other dogs for direction. She needs a fenced yard as street noises do scare her and she would need to work up to them. She is a joy to have as a foster and will make a great companion to someone with another grey or two or three and just want to add a sweet little girl who loves to be petted and have her belly rubbed. Foster Update 2/28/2018 Songbird is doing very well and had a nice excursion to Gettysburg over the weekend. She hung out with other greys, galgos, a lurcher and a small terrier, as well as their people, and is getting more comfortable. Although she gets a little nervous on walks if there is a lot of traffic, overall she does well on the leash and doesn't pull. She is fine with the cats, is actually a little intimidated by them and has become quite relaxed in the house. She does the steps just fine, taught herself, and spends the night on a dog bed in our room, sleeping through the night without any accidents. I do think she would be better in a home with another dog and probably better without small children as too much commotion gets her upset.

      Breed: Greyhound

      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Greyhound. RC Sandrobber is a gorgeous tuxedo boy who is very sweet. The volunteers described him as being "Zen"--just a nice, calm boy. Sandrobber is a friendly boy who is a real leaner. Sandrobber is a stately, tall drink of water. He is 3 years old and cat tolerant with supervision. Foster UPdate 2/11/2018 RC Sandrobber will steal your heart! Born April 10, 2014, he’s a gorgeous boy with a sleek black coat and white chest and “platform” feet. He adjusted quickly to the routine of our busy family and home and has been an absolute pleasure to host. He recognizes the adults and kids in the house as alpha to him and has attached himself to his foster dad, following him wherever he goes. Here’s what you need to know about Sandrobber: Quite independent; our educated guess is that he would be fine as an “only dog” in his adopter’s home, but would also be fine with other dogs. Sleeps through the night on a dog bed in our bedroom. Does well in his crate while we are at work or school. Gets along with our two male greyhounds (a goofy 9-year-old and a 13-year-old elder statesman). Does well with our dog-friendly kids, ages 12 and 16. Mastered the stairs and walking on our wood/tile/laminate flooring (the stairs are carpeted). Eats well; has shown no food aggression. Travels well in the car. Walks well on a leash. Will make a fantastic “ambassadog” -- he is sociable. Is good with cats. He’s curious about them and keeps tabs on where they are and what they’re doing, but doesn’t chase them. Corrects well. What to watch for: Like many dogs, Sandrobber doesn’t like to be disturbed by other when he’s on his dog bed and has given them a low, murmured growl if they step on his bed (or him). We’ve tested him by doing this to him ourselves (standing over him while he’s on his bed, walking right next to the dog bed when he’s on it) and he has not growled at us. We’ve caught him “counter surfing” (front feet up on the counter) and correct him when we catch him; he corrects very well. During his first few days, he had some accidents and the house and would mark, but this hasn’t happened for the last 4 days. He’s adjusted well to our schedule and understanding what is expected of him.

Bandit's racing name was Time Server. Foster Update: Bandit is a happy, almost 12 year old boy. Sleep is his favorite thing and looking for squirrels. He is very friendly and greets everyone with a wag. He does not have issue with other greyhounds and is very easy going. Bandit no longer likes going up my full flight of stairs, so he would do best on one level. Although he is OK home along with my other grey while I work, he would really like to have a human who is home with him. The best parts of my day are when I come down in the morning and come home from work and he is slowly bowing and hopping. Bandit walks beautifully on a leash, and at his age is very focused on movement, and did I say squirrels.

Posted Breed: Hound. Ace is an adorable medium sized hound mix that was relinquished to a shelter along with his offspring (we have Sunshine) as the owner could not care for them. Both Ace and Sunshine had only a few hours left in the shelter and we were asked to help them both before they were euthanized. We are happy to be able to welcome Ace who is 6 years old. He was heartworm positive (as was Sunshine). They have both received treatment for the heartworm and are resting comfortably. Ace is ready for adoption. He is a very happy and lovable boy who is just looking for a family to call his own who will take care of him and love him. He is a playful boy but calms down and wants to hang out. He was interested in the cat but it seemed more to play, so we are saying that he is cat workable.

Posted Breed: Greyhound. Foster Update 1/20/2015 "Rooney was returned for a second time as the home she was in just wasn't a good fit. Rooney is a fun, active, inquisitive, kind of quirky little girl. She at times is very outgoing, yet at other times seems almost shy. Rooney loves to play with toys and has recently learned to "drop it" as she sometimes does not like to share. She can be a collector of items around the house, so its best to try to keep things you don't want her to get into put away. Rooney is a good eater, crates well, but at times still needs to be watched with her housebreaking. If you are looking for a little snuggle bug, Rooney is your girl." _____________________________________________________ TB's Rooney is a beautiful, sleek, dainty girl. She has an adorable prance in her step. She's very friendly, gives kisses, chitters and likes to bury her head into you--how cute is she!! She enjoys attention but not in a pushy way. Rooney is 2 years old and cat tolerant with supervision. 9/11/2014 Rooney was returned after 3 days due to absolutely no fault of her own and she is in a foster home and waiting for her forever home. Foster Update 9/16/2014 Rooney is a delightful two-year old girl (DOB 7/20/2012) and is perhaps the tiniest greyhound this experienced Greyhound lover has ever come across. I estimate her to be about 50 something pounds, though she is still gaining some needed weight. She is striking in both her dainty stature and shiny black coat. Her foster home includes three cats. She is curious about them, but is easily redirected from looking at them. We also have two resident greyhounds; she gets along with both and enjoys playing in our fenced-in yard with them. We also have two dog-friendly children, ages 9 and 13; she does well with the children and readily receives gentle pettings from them. Both adults in our home work full time. While we are at work, Rooney is crated. She goes in her crate easily and has had no issues with, or accidents in, the crate. At night, she sleeps on a dog bed next to our bed. She has mastered the stairs and our laminate/tile/wood flooring. She has made excellent progress in house living and manners and has learned that "pottying" is done outside on walks or in the fenced-in yard. Rooney walks well on a leash and enjoys her jaunts about the neighborhood. Rooney is an affectionate girl who loves the company of people. She has a warm, endearing quality and will make a loving companion to her lucky adopter.
