Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Jack was surrendered to the pound by his family, which must have been a devastating experience for him. He is very affectionate and attaches very quick to every person he meets. He gets attached so much that he doesn’t want to share you with somebody else and therefore becomes protective. Jack needs a person who can be his leader, who will show him the way and help him to trust again. Jack is very smart and eager to learn. He is also great with dogs and it would be wonderful if he can live with a canine companion. If you are interested in meeting Jack Black, please download the Adoption Questionnaire, fill it out and fax it back to us at (310) 362-0321. You can also meet this and/or other available dogs at our weekend adoptions. [Jack Black is 2-3 years old and weighs 45 lbs.] (1504)

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Breed: Chihuahua-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Senior
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat). I’m lucky to be alive! I was saved from the scary pound with little time to spare from being killed! Thankfully a nice rescue lady picked me to get out, even though I’m an older Chihuahua, she knows how awesome I can be and wanted to help me find a loving forever home. I’ve been at a foster home with some other dogs who were also saved, we all get along great. I love to go for walks and have a good pace, for being the older one of the bunch. I can keep up with anyone and have a lot of pep in my step! I’m mellow and quiet and really just need someone to love me. I’m pretty small and would love to be adopted into a home that wants to spoil me and treat me like a cherished member of their family. [Lani is 10 years old and weighs 7 lbs.] If you'd like to meet Lani, please contact Jill at adoptions@apeaction.org Note: This is a courtesy posting for our fellow rescuer, which means that even though this animal does not belong to our group, we are here to help those who need to find a home for their animals. We are merely helping them gain exposure on the Internet by serving as a conduit to make the initial contact with the potential homes, and we are not responsible for the content of this post. All future communications and arrangements are solely between you and the above contact person. (1709)

Posted Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier / Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Alistair is a fantastic dog, with a beautiful chocolate brown coat, who is ready to go home! He is potty-trained, crate-trained, and adores the company of other dogs. He walks nicely on his leash and likes to chew on things, especially toys. He listens well, and knows sit, stop, and no. Alistair is very submissive, gentle, and loving. A very sweet, soft-hearted boy. When came to the pound, he was too afraid to even leave his cubby in the back of his kennel run. He sat there, in the dark, cowering in fear for days. It seems like the world had not been very nice to our sweet boy. With the patience and love of his foster, Alistair learned that people are nice. Also being around with another dog really boosts his confidence. While sudden loud noises and such still make him jump, he eagerly asks to be petted and snuggled. He happily wags his tail all day once settled in. He adores the dog of his foster mom and loves taking naps with her. He likes to lounge outside in the yard and take walks. He is ready to start a new life with you! [Alistar is 4 years old and weighs 55 lbs.] If you are interested in meeting Alistair, please download the Adoption Questionnaire, fill it out and fax it back to us at (310) 362-0321. You can also meet this and/or other available dogs at our weekend adoptions. (1509)

Posted Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier (short coat). I was found abandoned….um, in the “valley" of Los Angeles (hence my name, very creative). After an intensive search for my original home, then spay and lots of TLC, I started looking for my forever home where I will be loved and protected for the rest of my life. I’m generally a happy girl, and get along with my canine foster brother and love snuggling with my human foster dad. Once I get to know you, I’m like that all the time. It’s the initial meeting that sometimes flips me out, and I make faces and noises that temporarily make me look scary, even though I have no intention of attacking. I guess I feel I have to protect myself. I know, I know….I’ll never be adopted if I keep doing this, but it's really a catch 22, ya know? I just need someone to adopt me and convince me that I don’t have to protect myself anymore. I’m very well-mannered in the house; actually my foster dad says I’m “perfect.” And I know all my basic commands my previous foster mama taught me. Would you give me a chance and let me blossom in your life? If you are interested in meeting Valley, please download the Adoption Questionnaire, fill it out and fax it back to us at (310) 362-0321. You can also meet this and/or other available dogs at our weekend adoptions. [Valley was born in July 2014 and weighs 51 lbs.] (1508)

Posted Breed: Belgian Shepherd Malinois / Mixed (short coat). My family lost me a few times letting me end up in the pound. The last time I was lost and impounded, my family could not pay the redemption fee, so they gave up and never returned. Being a happy-go-lucky guy, I'm essentially a middle-aged puppy! I'm a love bug who is puppy-like in my sweetness, enthusiasm, curiosity, and desire to be part of everything. I haven't had much by way of formal training, and need some work on my leash skills and basic commands. But because I am smart and cooperative, I'll be a good student and easily learn the basics needed to be a model canine citizen. I'd love to be a companion in an active family, from one person to many, where I'm a special buddy and valued as a family member. If you are interested in meeting Rocky, please download the Adoption Questionnaire, fill it out and fax it back to us at (310) 362-0321. You can also meet this and/or other available dogs at our weekend adoptions. [Rocky was born in Dec. 2007 and weighs 80 lbs.] (1608)

Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat). When Forte saved me from the pound, they helped me recover from a broken leg, an injury from being hit by a car before I entered the pound, and provided me a safe environment to give birth to 4 beautiful puppies (all have been adopted). Now, it is time for me to find my forever home! I am playful and cuddly and LOVE spending time with my humans! I enjoy going on long walks, but admit that I am working on improving my leash skills (I know I can do better). Although I am good with dogs, my separation from them while I cared for my babies made me a bit anxious being around others again, but my fosters are helping me remember that other dogs make good companions. If you are looking for a loyal and affectionate family member, I think I am your girl! Would you be interested in meeting me? If you are interested in meeting Peanut, please download the Adoption Questionnaire, fill it out and fax it back to us at (310) 362-0321. You can also meet this and/or other available dogs at our weekend adoptions. [Peanut is 3 years old and weighs 14 lbs.] (1709)

Posted Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier / Mixed (short coat). I was dumped at the pound by my abuser owner….then got lucky, I was saved. I was in a very bad condition, not long to live but then look at me now, I was given a 2nd chance. I am a very sweet and loving girl, who enjoys her walks, playful and love to give you kisses! I can learn tricks if you have the patience because I already know a few such as; sit, shake, heal around you, then sit again, shake again and I will balance things on my head for you. I love so much to play fetch non-stop with my balls and play in the water hose where I can jump high in the air but be careful…I will chew up your water hose! When I sleep I need to sleep alone where no one sneaks up on me and suddenly awakening me because I was abused at one time, so I need you to always let me know you are there, with NO surprises. I am very good on a leash with healing and staying with my person. I so love being brushed and loved on but I just need that right person who knows, understands and can teach me. Posted Breed: Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Boy oh boy, am I a lucky boy! The rescuer that saw me in the pound couldn’t save me because they had already agreed to take three others, so I was waiting and hoped someone would adopt me…but no one did. My time was up and the rescuer came back and saved me and another dog. Both of us had leg issues but they still saved us! I’ve been in two different foster homes and they both say I’m a good boy. I have a lot of energy and love to go for walks, play with other little dogs, and run around in the yard. I have an old leg injury that looks kinda funny, but it doesn’t bother me at all. I’m only about 8 lbs, so I’m easy to pick up and carry. I’d love a home that “gets me” as I’m a bit stand offish in the beginning, but once I feel safe, I’m a sweet and happy boy!
