A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Jimbo is perhaps the world's smartest dog. He can climb out of pens, figure out how to get through gates, and climb up on anything high (chairs, counters, etc.) to see where his people are. He will bond to you very fast and not want to let you out of his sight. He is housebroken, but will "go" in the bathroom when he feels the urge. He is a great bed warmer as he likes to sleep under the covers. He would do best in an adult only household. He knows how to sit and will show off this skill for a cookie. A fenced yard is required as he tends to run, and no small pets (including cats) as he will chase them if they run. He was given up to a shelter because his former family felt he was too old. He may be blind but we don't think he is old in our books. He is still quite capable of giving kisses and a little play time with friends. He truly amazes us as he is such a happy go lucky boy who shows it with endless tail wags! He is house trained, gets along with other dogs and cats. Would be good with older kids. We recommend a fenced yard or STRICT leash walking. Breed: Chihuahua-Unknown Mix

      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat). Say hello to Rue, a little female chihuahua-mix being fostered in Warrenton, Virginia. Rue is a very timid dog, around a year old, and is looking for a special adopter to help her continue her recovery from her traumatic beginning in life. Rue is extremely scared of women, but LOVES men and quiet teenage boys. No small children as they make noise and startle her. She is currently being fostered with 5 other dogs, which she loves to play with. However, the resident German Shepherd scares her a bit since she's so big and rambunctious. She prefers to play with the smaller dogs and our calmer Chow/GSD mix. She definitely needs an established pack of dogs in her adoptive home for company. Rue would do best in a home with a single guy or an older retired gentleman. While she is less scared of our teenage daughter and teenage boy exchange student, she only wants to be with men. She is very curious about me, and will watch me intently, she still cowers in fear when I come near her. But she will sit in the living room with me, whereas when we first started fostering her she wouldn't even do that. Rue is spayed and UTD on all shots. She is available for adoption through Paws For Seniors. Rue loves to play with other dogs and is fine with cats. Little Rue! If you are male and looking for a velcro dog, Rue would be a perfect fit! She is available for adoption through Paws For Seniors! She is quite the little firecracker of a dog. Full of personality and spunk. BUT she is still shy of women, will definitely need a male adopter. Paws For Seniors Adoption Process Thank you for your interest in adopting a Paws For Seniors pet.
