Posted Breed: Hound / Shepherd / Mixed (medium coat). See Bishop's HomepageGo to our official websiteYou can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.Bishop was a terrified, hungry, abused, and injured dog when SAR volunteers were finally able to catch him after many failed attempts. An exam by a veterinarian showed a dog that had been badly abused. He was underweight, heartworm positive, and had an embedded harness! Bishop was scared of humans and human contact. He trusted nobody. Bishop's long road of recovery began with emergency surgery to remove the embedded harness. Infection had already set in. After rest, good nutrition, and plenty of antibiotics, Bishop recovered. Next, he had to endure months of heartworm treatment. He came through with flying colors and was eventually given a clean bill of health. Bishop is 3 years old now and is physically completely healed up and healthy! Emotionally, however, he still struggles with trust and is extremely shy when he meets someone new. Strange sounds and objects can scare him, so he will need patience and understanding from his forever family. Once he gets to know you, he quickly bonds with you and stays right by your side! How amazing that he can still be so loyal to humans after all he has been through. Bishop absolutely loves other dogs and finds a great deal of comfort in their presence, so he prefers a family with another dog. He enjoys going to his local doggie daycare and playing with his friends. Bishop is house-trained and loves going for walks. He also enjoys playing in the water and swimming! He is a big boy, weighing 100 pounds, but he is so gentle and affectionate. Bishop needs a loving forever family to continue is rehabilitation and love him unconditionally. Please consider offering him a forever home with all the love and nurturing from a family that he so deserves! *FENCED YARD REQUIRED (no underground/invisible fences) If you are interested in adopting Bishop, please fill out an adoption application from our website.

A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Baxter

      verified

      rescue
      Breed: Boxer-Mastiff Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Boxer / Mastiff / Mixed (short coat). Baxter is a Boxer/Mastiff mix. He will be 5 years old in May. He weighs 58 pounds and is a brindle color with four white socks. Baxter had a very rough life when he was a puppy. He was chained out and treated poorly by his owners until one of our volunteers was able to get them to surrender him. Baxter was adopted out 2 years ago to a wonderful family and became a spoiled lap dog. He is very loving, affectionate and docile. His current family has to move to care for a family member that can't be around dogs. They very reluctantly have to return Baxter to us and they need to find a home for his brother Maxwell. We would love to find Baxter and Maxwell a home together but we know that is almost impossible. If you would like to meet Baxter please fill out an application from our website.

      Breed: Labrador Retriever-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). We think Buster is about 2 years old and around 45 pounds. He is a lab mix, maybe with Beagle. Buster has been chained up his whole life, but our volunteers have been keeping a close eye on him. They made sure he had a warm dog house with shavings and got him set up with a runner. He always had someone bringing him food and water with hopes that his owner would give him up. Our lucky day has arrived!!! Buster's owner has moved and left him for us to find a home for him. He is a very loving dog and always so excited to see everyone. Buster did great with the other dog that used to live there too. We are not sure how he is with cats or small animals. Buster has never been in a house so he will need work with house training. He was in a foster home for a couple of weeks but he was having issues with anxiety. He likes to be with his people so he is going to need someone that is home often and can work with his fears of being left alone again. He cannot wait to find a family that is going to care for him like he deserves. Please fill out an application if you would like to meet Buster.

      Breed: Boxer
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Boxer (short coat). Maxwell is a purebred Boxer, he will be 3 years old in May and weighs 57 pounds. He is Baxter's doggie brother. Max is the dominant of the two dogs but plays well with other dogs. He isn't good with cats but loves all humans. Max is very spoiled and loves to snuggle up on the couch with everyone. His current family loves him very much but they have to move and care for family that can't be around dogs. He eats rice and lamb food and treats because food with dyes in it make him itch. We would love to adopt Max and Baxter out together but we know that will be very hard. If you would like to meet Max please fill out an application from our website.

Posted Breed: Dachshund / Mixed (short coat). Haley and Daisy are sisters, both are about 1 year old and they weigh 20-25 pounds each. Haley is the all black girl and Daisy is the brown one. They have short legs and long bodies. We think their mom was a dachshund but we don't have any idea who dad was. The girls have lived outside during the first year of their life so they will need work with housetraining. They would love to have a home together but we will adopt them separately in order to find their perfect homes. Posted Breed: Maltese / Poodle (Miniature) / Mixed (long coat). Hi I'm Jake, its nice to meet you. A little about me, let see.....I am 7 years young and I weigh 15.9 pounds. I was told I am a Maltipoo which is a cross between a Maltese and a Poodle. All I really know is that I am adorable!!! I had a home for 7 years but in the past couple years I developed a condition called Pancreatitis. I've never really said this out loud but when I get stressed or eat something I shouldn't I get diarrhea. My human mom tried to care for me but she said I would get better care in a different home. I understand that so I am waiting for my new people to come adopt me. I did go to a new home with two great people and their dog. They really liked me and I got along great with their dog. Unfortunately they had to bring me back because I was talking too much to the neighbors dogs. You see they had a corner lot with a great iron fenced yard. I could see all the people with their dogs walking by and I just wanted to let them know that this was my yard now. I got a little too big for my britches and I snapped at a puppy that was trying to tell me that they yard belonged to my sister. Well I guess I took that one too far. I heard them saying that I would do better with a solid fence when I am outside or be at a house that wasn't so close to the neighbors. I would do better with older children and I am good with other dogs. I love to give my humans kisses on the lips and it is so much fun to play with them when they pretend they are dogs too. I do good when I am kept on my special diet food and not given any people food, although I do like the people food, I don't like for it to give me a belly ache. They said to let you know if you wanted to meet me you could go to our website to fill out an application. Thanks for reading my note and I hope to see you soon. Jake

      Breed: Labrador Retriever-Unknown Mix

      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Hound / Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Little Ann is a 5 year old Hound/Lab mix. She weighs 65.6 pounds right now and could afford to put on a little more. This sweet girl was found at a store parking lot with her daughter Sandy. The girls were hanging out there for about 3 weeks and no body could catch them. We came on a rainy day with hot dogs in hand and finally got them in our car. Little Ann is very gentle and loving. She takes a couple minutes to warm up to people but can tell when someone is going to be nice to her. She needs a new forever home as an indoor dog with a fenced yard for playtime. Please open your heart and let her in your home. Her daughter Sandy has been adopted so Little Ann is really ready for her new home now. You can fill out an application from our website so you can meet her.

      Breed: Pomeranian

      Age: Senior
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Pomeranian (long coat). Tuffy is a 10 year old Pomeranian, he weighs about 10 pounds. This poor little guy had a rough life and is finally in safe hands. He was covered in fleas and has hair loss on his rear end. He lost his vision in his right eye due to a traumatic injury. We tried very hard to save his eye, but it became too painful and he had to have it removed. We are trying very hard to earn this boy's trust but he will try and bite if you come at him too quickly. Tuffy really needs a home with a very patient family that will give him the time he needs to adjust. We don't know yet if he is house trained or if he gets along with other dogs or cats. He needs an adult home only and a fenced yard is preferred. Please fill out an application if you would like to meet Tuffy.

      Breed: Jack Russell Terrier-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Jack Russell Terrier / Fox Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Lil Buddy is a 4 year old Jack Russell/Fox Terrier mix, he weighs 15 pounds. These really nice people found him and coaxed him into their back yard. He learned to trust them and would take food from their hands and follow them around but would run if they tried to touch him. We tried to win him over too, but finally had to sedate him to get him to the vet's office. Buddy is in a wonderful foster home and his parents are teaching him how to trust. He plays with toys and loves to run around with his foster brothers and sister. When he is at the pet fair's he will clam up and acts very shy and scared. He will warm up to a new family and show his more playful side with a little time. We feel he would do better in a home with only adults or older children. He must have a fenced yard for potty and playtime. If you are interested in meeting him please fill out an application from our website.
