Posted Breed: Norfolk Terrier / Silky Terrier / Mixed. Breed: Norfolk Terrier mix Age: 10 years Weight: 10 pounds Gender: Male Jerry is a quiet, gentle dog and gets along better when with other dogs. After a patient introductory period, he calmly tolerates being groomed and handled. He is looking for the perfect person to show him some kindness and affection and make him part of their "pack." He would love someone patient enough to teach him that the world is a safe place to be! This sweet soul really needs someone who understands that because of his turbulent past, he will never be a terribly outgoing boy and will have to become your friend over time, making gradual progress as you earn his trust. He just needs that special someone to instill in him confidence and so he can respond with loyalty. More than anything, Jerry LOVES walks! His favorite activity is going for a walk and exploring your neighborhood! He sees that leash come out and really lights up. We have learned through our time with Jerry that he has a skin irritation that requires a daily regiment of medication. This can be costly and time consuming. He also is sensitive to many foods and we can help list appropriate options for him. Jerry arrived as a stray that was really in need of medical attention and grooming. His skin and coat are now healthy and he is looking very handsome! Jerry came to POMDR from San Jose Animal Services after being picked up as a stray.

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Sasha Fierce...

      rescue
      Breed: Chihuahua-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Senior
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed. Breed: Toy Mixed Breed, Small Mixed Breed Age: 11 years, 10 years Weight: 5 pounds, 11 pounds Gender: Female, Female These two girls adore one another. They have been together since puppyhood and often sleep snuggled in the same bed, and they're looking for a special adopter who will protect their little family unit. Sasha can be shy, but only for a moment. She quickly warms up to strangers, especially if she's put in a lap where she can curl up and feel safe. She listens attentively, tilting her head from side to side as you talk. And she lets you know she'd like you to hold her by putting her tiny paws on your leg. Her big, bright eyes give a hint to the smart, confident dog she is. While she gets along well with other dogs of all sizes, she'll let big dogs know when they're making her uncomfortable. Sasha loves to go on walks, especially if you carry her most of the way and then give her time to get out and explore, and she's great riding in the car. Priscilla is the more bashful of the two, often looking to Sasha for guidance on how to behave. If Sasha warms up to another dog or person, Priscilla is sure to follow - she truly looks up to her big sister. Priscilla is great on the leash and loves to discover new things as you go on walks. She communicates via cute little grunts and sighs, and she's a bit of a quiet snorer at night. Priscilla loves a good belly rub or to be gently pet - she's not as much of a lap dweller as her sister. As long as you provide some reassurance, she's a good passenger in the car. Both girls are housetrained and mellow, resting quietly while you work or watch TV. They also behave when left home alone. They're happy as long as they have each other, a warm, safe place to sleep, and a person or two (or many) who love them. They came to POMDR when their guardians moved into housing that didn't allow pets. We're happy to be able to keep them together.

Posted Breed: Chihuahua. Breed: Small Mixed Breed, Small Mixed Breed Age: 13 years, 13 years Weight: 10 pounds, 10 pounds Gender: Male, Male Pepe and Taz are brothers! And boy, do they love each other. No sibling rivalry here - they are quite content both being in your lap at the same time and falling soundly asleep. These two are quiet, easy keepers who get along well with dogs of all sizes. Pepe and Taz are adorable. Taz is the slightly more "tan" colored dog, so yes, it's possible to tell them apart! They can often be found kissing or cuddling, or asking politely for you to pick them up. Pepe and Taz lived with other dogs and three kitties in their previous family and they got along with everybody. Their favorite pastime (other than getting your attention) is lounging on a sunny patio and soaking up some rays. We'd love to keep Pepe and Taz together. They have been together since puppyhood and came to us when their guardian passed away.

      Breed: Chihuahua-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed. Breed: Small Mixed Breed Age: 9 years Weight: 7 pounds Gender: Female This adorable girl is ready to meet you. Maeby warms up to new people quickly. She will walk up very slowly to a new person, but then allow them to pet her, and in return she gives them kisses. She does the same with children. Maeby can walk happily for miles, but at home she's very mellow, spending much of her time napping, sitting in laps or quietly chewing on a chewy. She gets along very well with the other dogs in her foster home, and they play together nicely. Maeby ignores the household cats unless they are persistent about pestering her. Maeby is fine meeting new dogs unless they are too rambunctious, in which case she worries. She walks very well on a leash in familiar places. In new or very busy places she can get spooked and try to pull somewhere that looks safe. When you have to go out without Maeby, she does fine inside the house with access to a doggie door, so that she may go outside into the yard whenever she wishes. Being confined seems to stress her a bit. Maeby rarely barks. Maeby's foster mom reports: "Maeby's best trait is how affectionate she is. She constantly dotes on her people. She is also the best cuddle buddy anyone could ask for. She loves bedtime and will fall asleep in your arms, right next to your head (she has her own pillow) or under the covers if you'll let her!" Maeby originally came to us from the Watsonville Shelter.

Look at those bright brown eyes and quirky, toothy smile! He also has a lovely white coat that's soft enough to smother yourself in. Tail held high, Patches explores his surroundings eagerly, and will take his leash in his mouth to urge his person to go out for a walk. He also like to make time in his day for some cuddling, too! When Patches goes out for his walk, he trots along with a pep in his step, happy face smiling and tail waving merrily the whole time. Patches sniffs every scent and he is a perfect little gentleman. What a catch for some lucky human! Patches came to us from Salinas Animal Services.

      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Dachshund / Chihuahua / Mixed. Breed: Dachshund/Chihuahua mix Age: 2 years Weight: 6 pounds Gender: Female Phoebe is a special needs sweetheart looking for the perfect adopter. She suffered a spinal injury before arriving at San Jose Animal Services, and a good samaritan knew she deserved a second chance. Phoebe is recovering nicely from spinal surgery, with a possibility of eventually regaining some ability to walk. The vet says that she is making excellent progress and has hopes she will be able to walk someday, but she is still on crate rest for a few weeks. Phoebe has a darling, silly personality and is NOT shy! She loves toys and giving kisses. She is outgoing with people and nonchalant about meeting other dogs. She is good at riding in the car. Her foster mama says she is an "overall great dog" who just needs extra TLC because of her back injury. Do you have room in your heart for this babe?

      Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Senior
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Poodle (unknown type) / Mixed. Dixie is a 23 pound, 11-year-old cuddly Cockapoo. She is a peppy little senior gal that loves attention and really thrives on human contact. She is on the timid side when meeting new people; she takes her time and then slowly warms up to them. Dixie's sight is impaired which may explain her timidity. Dixie is intrigued by cats and would love to have a cat friend in her life if possible. She has lived with dogs, too, and would be fine as an only dog or part of a pack. She hasn't shown interest in toys. When walking on a leash, she doesn't pull, but she wanders in all directions. She never runs unless encouraged to do so. When she gets excited in the house, she does have accidents. This can likely be corrected with training. She whines a little when separated from her foster, but quiets down eventually. Her foster mom says "Dixie loves to take car trips. She doesn't act her age. Minus the cataracts, you wouldn't know she was about 12. She acts younger -- bouncy, and happy!" Dixie has multiple health issues that need ongoing attention. She is on daily eye medication, but only sees the ophthalmologist every six months. She has chronic ear and skin issues and is under the care of a dermatologist. She has environmental allergies and takes daily medication to help keep her skin and ears healthy and needs weekly medicated baths. She also has low thyroid and is on a thyroid medication and needs to have her thyroid levels checked every 4-6 months. She is looking for a devoted adopter who isn't bothered by her special needs. Dixie came to us as a stray from Salinas Animal Services.

      Breed: Chihuahua-Unknown Mix

      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed. Breed: Chihuahua Mix Age: 6 years Weight: 10 pounds Gender: Male Walter can be a bit reserved when first meeting you, but a few head scratches later and he's all yours. This little guy isn't clingy, though. He wants to spend his days near you, but he doesn't have to be sitting on your lap the entire time. Great news for people who like to avoid a dusting of dog hair on their pants. He is an active, alert doggie who enjoys going on walks and saying hello to other dogs. Walter quickly warms up to strangers, but he doesn't always enjoy the energy level (and volume) of young children. He's used to a more laid back scene. Before coming to POMDR, he was the gentle companion of a senior who has since passed away. Walter sleeps quietly in a crate at night and does just fine roaming free during the day. He shares his toys, but he likes to keep his food to himself. If there's a cat in the vicinity, Walter thinks it's great fun to run after it. He's a smart cookie who's currently learning better manners and catching on quickly. Walter will thrive in a relaxed environment with someone looking for a fun, four-legged friend to take on walks and love on.
