Posted Breed: Yorkshire Terrier Yorkie / Poodle (Toy) / Mixed (medium coat). Gabriel was taken into foster care in 2009. I have been fostering him for the past 5 years. Gabriel was an owner surrender when he was a year old, given to a shelter. He came from the Milwaukee, WI area. Gabriel came into foster care as a very abused pup, having brain damage and swelling of the brain. After being on Phenobarbitol for 4 years, his seizures have stopped and he has been Pheno free for the past year. Gabriel is currently taking Prozac to keep him calm. The abuse he endured his first year of life has left him with many fears. He is deathly afraid of brooms, mops, and any type of balls(basketballs, soccer balls and children's toy balls). Our Vet had said that these instruments may be the cause of his brain damage and fears. Gabriel will not be adopted out to a family with children. Children tend to scare him and we can not guarantee him not reacting badly towards them. He needs a dog savvy family consisting of adults only where he will get the respect he is so deserving of. He is a lover, gives the best kisses and loves being a lap pup. He is leash trained and looks forward to his walks. Gabriel is currently being fed twice daily, and his food must consist of a grain free diet. He is house trained and crate trained, he is current on his vaccinations, Heartgard and Frontline Plus.

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Breed: Maltese
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Maltese / Maltese (medium coat). Adoption Fee: $250.00. 12/21/2017 Hello, Hello, Hello!!!! I have done a lot of learning since the summer. I let my foster mom know when I need to go outside to do my business. I still wear a belly band because of those old memories I have from the puppy mill. Sometimes without even knowing it, I lift my leg in the house, and I have been known to poop in my foster brothers bed! I am the king of the house! When I bark I let everyone know I am in charge. I am not afraid of any pup and get along with all dogs.I yip for my breakfast and dinner just to get foster moms attention so she moves faster. I like short walks as long as Autumn is by my side. I love her and I can't bear to be away from her for any length of time. I'm not much interested in toys, I would rather sit on your lap and get a body massage and belly rubs. I show my appreciation by kicking your hands. Autumn and I are looking for our forever home. A home where we will be loved and also a securely fenced in yard so we can play outside. Since we are so small and fragile, we will not be adopted out to a family with children under the age of 15. Autumn and I are UTD on all of our vaccinations, We are on monthly heartworm and flea and tick preventative, it's called Trifexis. We are both very healthy and get professionally groomed every 6 weeks. Autumn and OakLee are a bonded pair and require being adopted together. Since they both love to explore outside, they require a securely fenced back yard. Update 10-01-2016 Hello, My name is Oaklee. I am now 6years and 10 months old who has many wonderful years of love to give. I am a sweet boy once I know you. I am starting to give kisses and play with my human. Since I was a breeder in a puppy mill it took me a while to show love since I was never shown it. Though I am leashed trained, my favorite thing to do outside is run in a fenced yard and bounce like a bunny, which makes my foster parents laugh. l love to exercise, but I am a good, calm boy in the house. I love to sleep next to Autumn inside and coax her to play. I sit nice for my meals when told. Call me and I will come to you. I sit like a champ for ear cleaning, grooming, and baths. I am very patient when being fussed over. I wear a belly band and am dry 50% of the time. I have gone on a pee pad with my belly band on. It may be possible for me to be trained to go on pee pads in a small area for breaks. I do my poop outside all of the time. It does not matter if my new owner is male or female, I will love either one. If you are chosen to adopt us, please give us time to adjust and we will love you whole-heartedly with hand kisses and playful bounces. Much Love, Oaklee Update 09-12-2016 Check out my new professional photos! I am a very handsome boy! Update 6-9-2016 Autumn and Oaklee have been in foster care for just over 6 months. They both have become pretty dependent of each other, trusting their foster mom and are no longer frightened. Update Monday December 7, 2015 OakLee and Autumn have been fostered in the same home for the past four weeks. It has come to the attention of Foster mom and dad that these two pups should not be separated. They rely on one another for cuddles, company and love. At this time, we will not be adopting out Autumn and OakLee separately. They will be looking for a home together. My name is OakLee. I am named after my foster mom's family home. You see, there are 5 big oak trees in the yard. She wanted to name me after them because of the beauty of nature and remembrance. I was in a cage for over 6 years of my life. You would be amazed how happy I am to be free. I love people, love to be pet and love, love, love running outside. I am quite social. Because I came from a puppy mill, my mouth and teeth are a mess. I lost many teeth, but I can tell you that my mouth feels so much better. And smells better too! We will be available for adoption after the 19th of November, 2015. Foster mom says I have to heal real good first before I can go to my forever home. We will be looking for an all adult home, we are very fine boned and need extra special care. We also will need some time to get potty trained, this is a whole new world for us and I hope everyone can be patient with us while we learn. I will also need a fenced in yard, we mill pups have flight issues, and boy, can we escape and run fast!

Posted Breed: Maltese / Maltese (medium coat). Adoption Fee: 250.00. 12/21/2017 I have become the tiniest love bug on earth. I love all people, love to snuggle and will lick your face till you're soaking wet! I get along great with other pups, I come to you when I am called and I sleep in the big bed at night with foster mommy. I am still not potty trained, I guess living in a cage in a puppy mill kinda wiped out my hopes of getting trained. I love to go outside and will do my business out there but I still am required to wear pixie panties so I don't soil in the house. I am leash trained and like to go on short walks, as long as OakLee is by my side. We are a bonded pair and must be adopted together. I don't know what I would do if OakLee wasn't close by. Foster mom keeps us professionally groomed. We are UTD on all of our vaccinations. We are current on our HW, Flea and Tick Preventatives, Trifexis. OakLee and I would love to find our forever home, a home with a large securely fenced yard and a mommy and daddy to love us! Since we are very small and fragile, we will not be adopted out to a family with children under the age of 15. Autumn and OakLee are a bonded pair and need to be adopted together. They both require a securely fenced yard. Update 10-01-2016 Hi, My name is Autumn and I am 6 years and 10 months old. Since I am a small breed dog, I can live a long time. I am a very sweet girl who loves to play with you and kiss your hand. Since I have been fostered, I have learned to walk on a leash. I am not much for running in the yard. I just wish to quickly do my business and come inside to be near you. When you have the time, I love to sit next to you on the couch and be petted. I will give you kisses ‘cause I really appreciate being loved since I was a former mill dog. At mealtime, I will sit nice when told. I eat soft food and clean my dish. Though I wear diaper, I am dry overnight and most of the day. My foster mom feels if I was put in a small room with pee pads for potty breaks that I eventually would not have to go out in the weather. I do enjoy being outside for a bit on the patio. Foster mom takes care to keep me out of the sun to prevent cataracts and off the grass after breaks to prevent fleas. My favorite thing is being near my human and sitting on the couch with her. I favor women, but can get used to a man with patience. The lucky person who adopts us will find that once I warm up to you, that I will bring you great joy and love. Please consider us as your forever friends, much love, Autumn and OakLee Update 09-12-2016 Check out my new professional photos! I am a glamour girl! Update 8-18-2016 Autumn continues to thrive in her foster home. She loves being outdoors in the summer months. Autumn and OakLee are are looking for a family with a fenced in backyard so they can explore yet be safe. Autumn and OakLee's adoption fee is $500.00 for both. They are both UTD on all vaccinations until November of 2016, both just had their dentals, and are HW neg. Update 6-9-2016 Autumn and Oaklee have been in foster care for just over 6 months. They both have become pretty dependent on each other, trusting their foster mom and are no longer frightened. Update Monday December 7, 2015 Autumn and OakLee have been fostered in the same home now for about 4 weeks. It has come to the attention of foster mom that these two should not be separated. They rely on each other for company, cuddles and love. At this time, we will not be adopting out Autumn or OakLee separately. Hellooooooooo! My name is Autumn, just like the day today, crispy and bright. I was named after my foster mum's family home. It's so beautiful there this time of the year. 5 pretty oak trees in the yard with stunning colors. My mate, OakLee is also named after their family home! I came out of a puppy mill. I have given birth to many babies, and well, it was time to be retired. I now live in a super duper home with other pups. I get along well with small pups, I've been around pups all my life. Anyway, for the first time in my life I have had a lovely bath and a warm snuggy bed to sleep in. I am in love being free. I love people and will keep nudging you till you pet me. Foster mom says I'm pretty much socialized, but I need some potty training. I am wearing a pair of panties now, we don't know if I will ever be able to go with out them. You know what people say? Accidents happen! To no fault of my own, I will try to only go potty outside. There are no guarantees in life, but I am a great girl and this should not stop you for putting in an adoption application. Due to my size and fragility, I will need to be in a home with adults only. I will need a fenced in yard so so I can enjoy my freedom. Foster mom has watched me play outside and snoop for holes under the fence. Not to worry, I couldn't go too far, she always has her eye on me and she's pretty quick to pick me up. I don't have many teeth, I had my dental today and most of my teeth were rotted and had to be pulled. I will require a soft diet of grain free food so I can continue on the road to good health. I will be available for adoption on November 19th. I need time to heal and my foster mom needs to learn as much about me as possible to make sure I find the right 'match'.

      Sir Rufus II...

      Breed: Papillon-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Papillon / Toy Terrier / Mixed (medium coat). Adoption Fee: 300.00. Pupdate 04/03/2018 Hello I'm Rufus! Don't you just love my new photos! I am a handsome Papillon mix and I'm as scrappy as they come. I have come a long way since being with my foster mom, I now make friends with everyone I meet, including older children. I love playing with my stuffed animals and tennis balls, and I also love finding hidden places in the house for a nap. I'll let you know when I need to go outside, and with a proper intro, I get along well with female dogs. I'm also a great doggy doorbell! If you're looking for an A-1 companion, I'm your guy! Pup date 2-3-2018 I am getting more socialized and have now figured out that I can live with other pups and play. I am still a bit shy and I need time to do my own investigating, on my terms. When I am properly introduced to other pups, I get along just grand. I love romping in the back yard, even in the freezing cold! I am completely potty trained and will go to the door when I have to go outside to do my business. I love toys and play a great game of fetch, I will be your best friend if you have toys and balls. Since training has been on my terms, I need a home who will take it slow so I can learn what is expected in my new forever home. I don't think younger children are in my future because I can get a little snarly at times. I am a great pup and appreciate love and respect. They call me is Rufus and they think I'm a Papillon mix. When I first came to A Promise of Love, I was really frighthened of people, and some dogs, but in the last few months I have really come out of my shell. With a slow and proper introduction, I become friends with children over 7, and both smaller and bigger dogs. My best buddy over the last few months was a pit bull, and she taught me many things, like how to scratch on the door to go outside to go potty! I love to cuddle with people and I also move my bed from room to room as the mood strikes. I also love to play with toys and bones and chase a ball throughout the house. I'm a great doorbell too! If you decide to adopt me I promise to keep you great company! Pupdate 6-6-2017 This is Rufus. He's a Papillon mix who came to us from a neglect situation. Despite this, Sir Rufus has an incredible outgoing personality and a zest for the outdoors. Although he is five years old, he loves to run and is a high energy pup who will need a fenced in yard. He is also a great companion indoors, where you may catch him napping in his crate, on his favorite pillow, or underneath a table. When he gets bored of a location, he will drag his bed with him to wherever his imagination takes him. He also loves stuffed toys, and carries his beloved Gumby with him throughout the house. He gets along with other dogs with a proper introduction, with older kids (12+), but unknown around cats. He is very vocal when anyone new comes to the house, but after they sit down and allow him to approach, he is quite friendly. He needs much more time to acquaint himself with men. Intake 5-13-2017 Owner surrender, came from a HS in north central Wisconsin. More to follow after Rufus settles in and decompresses. HS observations: Rufus does not like small children, male dogs, thunderstorms or fire crackers. He likes going on walks but needs to learn leash manners. Can be a bit of a resource guarder with his food bowl. Loves toys and cuddling. Will need to be placed in a home with no other dogs or children. He will be neutered and microchipped on May 17th, Rufus visited our vet today and was updated on all vaccinations including Bordatella. Also given a steroid injection because of past flea infestation with hair loss on his lower back. Rufus will need a fenced yard. Adoption fee is $300.00

Posted Breed: Shih Tzu (medium coat). Adoption Fee: 400.00. Intake:03/01/2018 Frankie came from an Animal Shelter. Originally he was brought in as a stray to the shelter in November with a severely broken jaw. Cronic right mandible fracture was identified when taken to The University of Wisconsin Animal Hospital. It was also noted the left side of his jaw was also broken. A root canal was performed on his right mandible. Frankie has a titanium plate and screws in his jaw on his left side. He has healed fantastically and has proven to be the perfect pup. He will need to be on soft dog food, or kibble that has been softened with water. Frankie has the most amazing eyes, one blue and one brown. Let's see what he has to say to you today! Hi everybody!!! My name is Frankie and I'm looking for a loving forever home. I'm living with my foster mom and dad and two furry siblings right now. My foster mom and dad really love me and say I'm always such a good boy, pretty much perfect, and that I don't have a mean bone in my body. They say I play well with others!!! I guess I'm just a happy guy!!! I'm potty trained and am a very good eater, always clean my bowl. I have so much fun playing with my fur siblings. I love chasing around the yard and talking to the neighbor doggies. I can run really fast!!! Inside I love playing with toys or just snuggling. My foster parents say I'm a very good snuggler!!! I pretty much love everybody. It would be nice to have a fur sibling, but, being the only "child" would be nice as well, then I would get all the attention!!! Most of all, I want someone who would love me as much as I would love them!!! I have a lot of love to give!!! ❤️ Frankie is an escape artist and will find a way to connect with the outside world. He will need an escape proof fenced yard and always need eyes on him while he is out exploring. Because of his surgeries, Frankie will not be adopted out to any home with small children. Frankie will be ready for adoption April 1, 2018 Frankie's adoption donation is $400.00

Posted Breed: Shih Tzu (short coat). Adoption Fee: 250.00. Please contact Cynthia for more information about this pet. February 2018 Hi everyone! Time to touch base with you again. I am doing great! Loving my life now that I no longer have to have babies. I am a dominant little girl. If you get in my way, I will let you know. I would like a friend, but this friend needs to be docile so that if I get a bit punchy, that pup will back down. I am not doing too good with my potty training. It is touch and miss. I am trying very very hard, but for someone that was able to potty in their cage for 10 years, it is going to take time. Please have patience with me. I love people. I love to be petted and will come when called. I need a fenced in yard though. I am not doing too good on a leash. My foster mom is trying to help me with this. I have one bad habit though, I like eating poop. This is very common for puppymill dogs. We get bored and hungry and do what we need to do to pass the time of day. Foster mom is trying very hard to break me of this habit. I would love a forever home. I make a wonderful cuddle buddy. I need a home that is patient and loving. A home that doesn't have any expectations. Please hit that adopt button. My Foster mom would love to talk to you. You won't be sorry. Meg Update: Meg is healing well after her extensive dental and extractions. Meg will be getting her spay on December 22, 2017. The Vet requested a lengthy amount of time for Meg to heal completely from her dental before they spay her. Meg is quite a dominant female and we are hoping she will be less dominant once she is spay. Meg will be ready for adoption on January 1, 2018. Hello everybody! Welcome me, Meg, to A Promise of Love! Today is the beginning of my new life. I am a 17 pound, tan and white, 10 ½ year old Shih Tzu. I am a breeder release, which means I spent my whole life making babies. My foster mom tells me that I do not have to do that anymore. That now it is time for me! I am very excited!! I am a friendly little girl, love to be petted, love other dogs, and love my foster mom and dad. The ONLY thing I do not like is to be picked up. That scares me a lot, and I try very hard to get away. This means that I am probably a flight risk, so I will need a secured fenced in yard if you adopt me. No small children please, as they may scare me. Responsible children over 15 would be okay. I am doing pretty good on the potty thing. But still need some work in that area. I will be available for adoption once I get my teeth cleaned, or pulled, as they are pretty bad, and I have my spay. If you would like to donate to my care, that would be just pawsome. Keep an eye on me as you will be seeing quite a bit of me in the future. Noselicks and Kisses, Meg

We are the cutest duo ever and we would love to find our forever home! We are potty trained, we like to voice our opinion when it's dinner time, we love attention and security. We both love to sit on your lap, foster mom calls the both of us "creepers" because once on your lap, we gently belly walk to your face to give you lots of kisses. We are very active and love to be outside. We squirrel watch even when we are in the house! If foster mom hears a high pitched squeal, she knows we have spotted a nutter butter. Pupdate 6-5-2017 Holy Man! Can you believe I have been in foster care almost a full year? Wow, that's a long time! And before I get started telling you all about me, I need to let you know two very important things. #1. I need to be adopted out as a bonded pair with my daughter Taffy. We have been together since her birth and we need to stay together. #2. Taffy and I were raised to hunt squirrels. This is not a laughing matter, we go into a frenzy when we see them. We are so fast, if we are not restrained with a harness and leash or securely fenced back yard, you may never see us again. Ok, glad I got that off my mind. Just want to be straight forward with you. I love to be loved. I give the longest wet kisses of any pup on earth. I will love you every day of my life and I show it in many ways. I am potty trained to do my business outside, I am also paper trained in the house. I love my crate and will gladly go there for my meals or some quiet time. I am a hearty eater and since I've been in foster care my coat has a beautiful sheen to it and has grown a lot. I don't need grooming but I will need a monthly bath to keep me smelling nice and clean. I need more training with my leash. Like I said, if I see one of those critters with the long and fuzzy tails, I am hysterical. Actually Taffy and I sit in front of the sliding glass doors and watch the back yard for hours. Once we see a squirrel, we will screech like there is no tomorrow! Foster mom thought we were really hurt the first time she heard us screech and came running to check on us. Yep, that critter was on the fence tantalizing us. Shame on him! I love sleeping in the big bed with foster momma. I curl up on a pillow next to her. My adoption donation is $300.00 Pupdate 6-17-2016 I have been in foster care for 5 days now, and thank goodness foster mom and dad have discovered that I need to be with my daughter, Taffy in order to be happy. It has been decided that we will be adopted out as a bonded pair so we can live our lives together like it is meant to be. We love all other pups, even big ones and we have no problem playing with the 'big' girls. We sleep in the big bed with foster mom and we are very sound sleepers. Intake June 12, 2016 My name is Tiffin. I am an unusual type of pup called a Coated Xolo. I am very loving and love to give kisses. I am tiny enough to fit in your coat pocket and go with you everywhere! I came from Mexico where my owners took me to the vet to be euthanized. They no longer needed me or my daughter Taffy to be part of their family. A wonderful lady scooped Taffy and I up and took us to her rescue. We have been potty trained, love to go for walks on our leash with our person. We are now at our second foster home looking for our forever families. We would like to stay together, but if that isn't possible, we can find our very own loving forever families. On my way into the USA on the transport, somehow my cornea got scratched. Foster mom took me to the vet first thing this morning so I could have my HW bloodwork checked, my bordatella injection and my eye checked. For the next week I am on special eye drops and internal medications to help me heal faster. I am HW negative, spayed and UTD on all my vaccinations and I am microchipped. I am a beautiful, loving girl that needs a family of my own! PS, Just so you know, I was bred to squirrel hunt, so I need to stay away from them!!!

If foster mom hears a high pitched squeal, she knows we have spotted a nutter butter! Pupdate 6-5-2017 Okee Dokee, I would like to share with you two very important facts about me. Then I will tell you about my life. #1. I must be adopted out as a bonded pair with my mom Tiffin. We have been together since the day I was born and momma Tiffin always protects me. If you see my mom, you will see me right beside her. #2. We were raised to hunt squirrels. We both go into a frenzy when we see one or more. If we are not properly harnessed and leashed, or in a securely fenced in yard, we will run and you may never see us again. I am doing extremely well in foster care. My mommy takes good care of me and is my protector. We love other pups, but would like to be the only two pups in your home. We both love attention and give the best kisses. I am potty trained to do my business outside and I am also paper trained in the house. Often times I get so excited outside I forget to do my business and will come into the house and head for the puppy papers. I love toys and have not ever destroyed a toy to this day. I am totally crate trained, eat my meals in my crate and will go there for some quiet time. I sleep in the big bed with foster momma at night, and I lay on a pillow with my mom. I have the most amazing eyes. I can almost see right through people and I know I am beautiful. My little legs are a bit longer than momma Tiffins, but we pretty much look alike. I love my momma and I can't go anywhere without her. I do well in the car, but I do need more training on leash. Too much excitement this time of year with all those fuzzy long tailed critters running about. Foster momma has never seen us catch a squirrel so we won't tell her what we do with them once caught. She won't give us the chance! My adoption donation is $300.00 Pupdate 6-17-2016 I have been in my foster home for five days now. Foster mom thinks it would be best if my mom and I are adopted out as a bonded pair. We are pretty much inseparable and I have been with Tiffin (my mommy) all of my life. If mommy can't see me, she starts crying and searching all over. I am so happy that foster mom and dad have discovered this, we will be together always and forever. My name is Taffy and I'm a very small Coated Xolo. My coloring is remarkable, I am a bowl of ice cream sundae for your eyes! A little bit of this and a little bit of that and you get a beautiful girl like me. I have stunning eyes and a beautiful coat. I get along with other pups, but when it's feeding time, I need to be crated to eat because I just might eat someone else's food and I will let everyone know what my intentions are. I came from Mexico where my previous owners wanted me to be euthanized. They didn't want us anymore. My goodness, I'm only two years old and deserve far better than that!A very nice lady came to my mommy's (Tiffin) and my rescue and saved us from sure death. This nice lady brought us all the way to the United States so we have a better chance of being adopted to a loving family. I love other pups as long as I am introduced to them slowly. I was bred to hunt squirrels, so I need to stay on my leash at all times while I'm out for a walk. I do need a fenced in backyard, and it must be secure. I can jump pretty high and I can run fast! I saw my doctor today, I am HW negative, UTD on all of my vaccinations, spayed and microchipped. I am ready for my forever home! I couldn't possibly be any more healthy than I am now. I love people, I love to give kisses and I make the perfect lap pup. It did take me a small minute to warm up to my foster daddy, but we are inseparable now. No small children for me, I am very fine boned and need older children that can respect my small stature. I'm a lion in a small package!
