Description
Dog Breed: Poodle (Toy) / Mixed (medium coat). Palmera is a very independent older dog who's looking for a quiet home to spend her time. She's nervous at first and may take a while to fully settle in new environments, but once she's comfortable she'd be more than happy to curl up at the end of the couch and lounge around during a movie. OTHER PETS: Palmera had no interest in other dogs during her time at TJO. She would likely get along best with another similarly-tempered dog in the home that will co-exist with her. [Case-By-Case (Must Meet First)] OWNER EXPERIENCE: Someone that can be dedicated to helping Palmera feel comfortable in her new home would be her ideal match, though someone that has experience with positive reinforcement and timid dogs will likely have an easier adjustment period. [First Dog / Some Experience] KIDS: Palmera is uncomfortable with some types of handling, so she would do best with kids that are old enough to understand when to let her have her own space. Interactions between children and dogs should always be actively monitored to ensure that both parties remain comfortable and safe. [10+ (Must Meet First)] ACTIVITY LEVEL: Palmera is a bit head-shy and is nervous of walking on-leash, so she's not currently a fan of walks or big adventures like a trip to the park. She's more than happy with some time out in an enclosed yard and a nice bed to curl up on. A combination of regular outings in the yard and mental enrichment will help meet her needs. [Couch Potato] VETERINARY CARE: As an older dog, Palmera will likely need more frequent routine appointments with a vet to ensure that she continues to age gracefully. At the moment, however, she is in good health and does not have any immediate concerns. [Routine / Above Average] LEVEL OF TRAINING NEEDED: Positive reinforcement training will help Palmera not only learn her basic cues, but also help her to feel more comfortable and confident in herself! It will provide a good opportunity for her to bond with her new owner as well. [Minimal] GROOMING: Because of her fur type, Palmera will require routine brushing in order to ensure that she does not develop any matts. Professional grooming appointments every 6-8 weeks will also be needed to keep her clean and comfortable. [Routine Brushing / Professional Grooming]
