Description
Dog Breed: Great Pyrenees (long coat). Hello, nice to meet you, my name is Olive. I'm currently living in Port Orchard, WA. My family reached out to the Great Pyrs & Paws rescue to help find me a new home as they've developed some allergies to me. I am currently living with my dog sister whom I love romping around and playing with, two cats, and two teenage two-legged siblings. I am crate trained and have been to basic training classes. I can be a bit reserved and shy when meeting new people but warm up fairly quickly and may roll over and ask for belly scratches. When it comes time to eat my mom says that I may growl if my dog sister gets near my food so they found it best to feed us separately. I did get to meet one of the ladies from the rescue who told me I was sweet and affectionate and had puppy play energy! I do love attention and affection! All our dogs require secure VISIBLE fencing. All current pets in adoptive home must be spayed/neutered and up to date on vaccinations. We do not adopt to families with children under the age of 6. Adoption Fee: $275 All of our dogs are spayed/neutered, microchipped and up to date on vaccinations. Transport Fee: $350 Transport fee includes the cost of transport plus the Health Certificate required for USDA approved transport. Adoption applications can be found on our website: .greatpyrsandpaws greatpyrsandpaws.rescuegroups/forms/form?formid=5959 Northwest adopter pays cost of transport to independent transport company. Breed overview
Great Pyrenees
A.K.A.: Pyrenean Mountain Dog, Patou, Chien de Montagne des Pyrénées, Pyrenean, Big White Dog, Bear Dog, Gentle Giant, Great Pyr, Pyr
Overview:
The Great Pyrenees is a majestic and ancient breed, originating in the Pyrenean mountains between France and Spain, where they served as formidable livestock guardians. Physically, they are large, powerful dogs, easily recognized by their thick, double coat, typically white (though sometimes marked with badger, grey, or tan), and a distinctive "double dewclaw" on their hind legs. Despite their imposing size, their temperament is generally calm, gentle, and remarkably patient, making them excellent companions. They possess a natural protectiveness, which translates to a watchful eye over their families and property. While loving and tolerant with children, their size and barking tendencies make them less suited for small apartment living; a home with a yard is ideal. Prospective owners should be aware of common health concerns such as hip and elbow dysplasia, patellar luxation, and certain eye conditions, emphasizing the importance of responsible breeding. Their independent nature also means they require consistent, positive reinforcement training.
