Dog Breed: Norwegian Elkhound (short coat). AVAILABLE SOON! I haven’t arrived at the adoption center just yet - I’m getting ready for adoption! Please fill out an adoption application if you’d like to meet me once I’m available. Born: April 23, 2025 I am looking for my forever home. Adoption Donation: $550 My litter includes: Amisha, Joe and Norway All dogs are microchipped, neutered, current on all vaccines, heartworm tested (if age appropriate), and up-to-date on preventatives at the time of adoption. All household members and any dogs from the household need to be present to be able to adopt. A photo ID will be required at the time of adoption. Appointments are recommended. All applications are considered general. Specific animals are NOT put on hold for adoption. When you visit, our adoption counselors will be able to make suggestions based on the type of pet you are looking for and help you find the best fit for your family. Animal House Shelter cannot guarantee the breeds of the adoptable animals. The animals are posted on the website as the breed or breed mix based on their physical characteristics they most resemble. We also cannot guarantee the ages of our adoptable animals or how large puppies will be when fully grown. We look forward to seeing you soon! Overview:
The Norwegian Elkhound is a robust and ancient breed, originating in Scandinavia where it served as a versatile hunting dog, primarily for large game like moose (elk). Physically, they are distinctive with their thick, weather-resistant double coat, typically in shades of grey and black, and their medium build, weighing generally between 48-55 pounds. Their curled tail and prick ears add to their alert and intelligent appearance. Temperamentally, Elkhounds are known for being loyal, courageous, and remarkably friendly with their families, often displaying a playful and affectionate nature. While they can be excellent companions for active families, their independent streak and high energy levels mean they require consistent training and plenty of exercise; they are generally not well-suited for small apartment living without significant effort to meet their needs. Like many breeds, they can be prone to certain health conditions such as hip dysplasia and progressive retinal atrophy, making responsible breeding and regular veterinary check-ups important for their well-being.
