Description

Dog Breed: Akita (medium coat). Jasper is a strong, mostly housebroken, boy who is searching for the humans who will help him feel settled and safe as he moves onto the next stage of his life's adventure. OTHER PETS: Jasper exhibits rude/pushy behavior around other dogs and does not listen to their feedback - he will not be adopted out to a home with other dogs. [ONLY PET] OWNER EXPERIENCE: Jasper is uncomfortable with some handling and has been human searching since his arrival at TJO. There is a chance that Jasper will be a flight risk and should not be left unattended in a yard once adopted. Jasper's best fit would be with an adopter who has experience with positive reinforcement, and helping dogs build confidence around prized possessions to help reduce resource guarding of humans, objects, food etc. [Very Experienced] KIDS: Jasper is a strong dog who is still working on loose leash walking and not being mouthy when playing with toys. He is intense with food (humans should leave his food bowls alone during mealtime,) will jump at toys, and is a large strong dog; his best fit would be with humans who are able to turn sideways and pause the interaction to help teach him paws on the floor will lead to interaction. Any minor humans should meet Jasper prior to adoption. [12+ (Must Meet First)] ACTIVITY LEVEL: Jasper has been going for walks - a combination of regular exercise and plenty of mental enrichment such as food puzzles and games will help meet his needs. [Good Walking Buddy] VETERINARY CARE: [Routine] GROOMING: [Minimal] LEVEL OF TRAINING NEEDED: Positive reinforcement training will help Jasper bond with his new owner as well as well as help him learn life skills and fun tricks while building confidence. [Moderate]

Akita

A.K.A.: Akita Inu, Japanese Akita, Great Japanese Dog, American Akita, Akita Ken, Akita dog, Matagi Inu, Odate-inu, Odate dog
Overview:

The Akita is a majestic and powerful breed originating from the mountainous regions of Japan, initially bred for hunting large game like bears and wild boar. Physically, they are easily recognizable by their substantial size, typically weighing between 70-130 pounds, and their dense double coat, which comes in various colors including red, fawn, sesame, white, and brindle. They possess a distinctive curled tail and a broad, triangular head with small, erect ears. In terms of temperament, Akitas are known for being loyal, courageous, and often described as "cat-like" in their independence and fastidiousness. While deeply devoted to their families, they can be reserved and even wary of strangers, requiring early socialization to ensure a well-adjusted adult. Due to their strong prey drive and independent nature, they are generally not recommended for first-time dog owners and thrive with experienced handlers. They can be good family dogs for those who understand their need for personal space and consistent training, but their size and sometimes aloof nature make them less suitable for apartment living without significant daily exercise. Health-wise, the breed can be prone to conditions such as hip and elbow dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy, and autoimmune disorders like Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada syndrome.
