Description

Dog Breed: German Shepherd Dog. Meet Rookie, our charming new arrival! He came to us from the shelter on Friday evening and spent some time with shepherds at his temporary foster home while we arranged for his travel to his permanent foster home in San Jose. After a short plane ride with Pilots and Paws, he is now relaxing with a resident shepherd until he finds his forever home. Rookie is a sweet and calm 16-week-old puppy who confidently explores his new surroundings. He loves playing with balls and toys, especially enjoying tug-of-war. Mindie, another one of our adoptable shepherds, had fun playing tug with him until she was adopted by her forever family on Saturday. Rookie is comfortable in his crate and enjoys napping on laps. He sleeps through the night for about seven hours before needing a potty break. With attentive supervision from his humans, he has made great progress with potty training. A bath and nail trim is always essential when a puppy arrives; Rookie was a champ throughout the process. We are incredibly thankful for the shelter staff who drove him part way after hours, our volunteers who stepped up to care for him, and the volunteer pilots who generously donate their time and fuel to transport our dogs. Have you checked out our YouTube channel? We would greatly appreciate your support by subscribing, liking, and commenting on the videos we share of our adoptable shepherds in action. You can also follow us on Instagram, Facebook and our newest Threads account where we post plenty of news and updates about our shepherds. As a foster-based rescue, ShepHeroes is always in need of fosters. An overwhelming number of shepherds in our local shelters need our help for a fresh start. Would you share your home and part of your life to help shepherds find new families? You provide the love, and we'll provide everything else! Saying "yes" today truly saves a life. Complete this .shepheroes/foster-form, and we'll be in touch ASAP! We appreciate your consideration.

German Shepherd Dog

A.K.A.: Alsatian, Alsatian Wolf Dog, Shepherd Dog, GSD, Deutscher Schäferhund, Schäferhund, Berger Allemand, Pastore Tedesco, Perro de Pastor Alemán, Alsatian Dog
Overview:

The German Shepherd Dog, a truly iconic breed, originated in Germany in the late 19th century, primarily for herding sheep. They are easily recognizable by their athletic, medium-to-large build, typically weighing between 50-90 pounds, with a distinct double coat that can be black and tan, sable, or solid black. Known for their intelligence and loyalty, German Shepherds possess a remarkably trainable and courageous temperament, making them exceptional working dogs in fields like police and service work. While generally good with families when properly socialized, their high energy levels and need for mental stimulation make them unsuitable for apartment living without significant daily exercise. Prospective owners should be aware of common health concerns such as hip and elbow dysplasia, as well as degenerative myelopathy, underscoring the importance of responsible breeding and regular veterinary care.
