Dog Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed. Meet Shadow: The Littlest Tough Guy with the Biggest Heart Shadow (NY) is a 5–6 week old (as of 11/9/25) terrier mix who just escaped a kill shelter like a tiny, wrinkly action hero. He’s currently rocking some battle scars—sores on his eyes, ears, and face—but don’t worry, he’s getting a little better every day with one of our fosters. Despite his rough start, Shadow is basically a marshmallow with legs. He loves people, adores other dogs, and has the kind of face that makes grown adults squeal in baby talk. He’s sweet, snuggly, and ready to be your sidekick in everything from Netflix binges to snack raids. Shadow’s looking for a forever home where he can heal, grow, and maybe steal a sock or two. If you’ve got room in your heart (and on your couch), apply to adopt this adorable goofball at .rescuedogsrocknyc. Warning: extreme cuteness may cause spontaneous happy dancing. A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
