Dog Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed. Sydney (GA) is a female Pit Bull Terrier mix estimated to be 7 months old at the time of intake in November 2024. Sydney is up to date on core vaccinations (age-appropriate) and is microchipped. She will be spayed prior to joining her forever home unless there is a medical reason why it has not yet been completed (in which case RDRNYC will work with the adopter to ensure this is done at the appropriate time). Sydney is good with people and other dogs. We rescued this sweet girl from a shelter where she was taken after having been picked up by Animal Control. Sydney was suffering from a painful skin condition, flea and ant bites. Her fur has fallen out and her skin is raw and red. We don't know how long this poor baby has suffered like that, but she is now receiving all the medical care she requires and Sydney is well on the way to recovery! Sydney is friendly and sweet. A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
