Description
Dog Breed: Cane Corso Mastiff (medium coat). OTHER PETS: Lana is interested in other dogs and does her best to show how much she wants to play, but can come on too strong and may be too much for some dogs. Though she hasn't had a high energy level around people, she can get very excited with dogs and tends to play bow and pounce in an attempt to play. [Case-By-Case (Must Meet First)] OWNER EXPERIENCE: Lana is a larger dog that would do best with someone that has experience with positive reinforcement, and has owned larger dogs before, especially since she has a tendency to pull on the leash. Positive reinforcement will help any guardian teach loose-leash walking skills. [Some Experience] KIDS: Lana can be uncomfortable with some types of handling, but tends to be very focused on her people. She can also be skittishh & jumpy around loud or sudden noises, so she would likely do best in a home with kids that are old enough to understand how to keep interactions relaxed and when to let her have her own space. As always, interactions between children and dogs should always be actively monitored to ensure that both parties remain comfortable and safe. [10+ (Must Meet First)] ACTIVITY LEVEL: Lana hasn't shown a huge interest in toys while at TJO, but she will gladly stick close to her people while walking around. Though she hasn't shown much energy while at TJO, it's possible that could change once she's out of the shelter and settled into her new environment. A combination of regular exercise and plenty of mental enrichment such as food puzzles and games will help meet her needs. [Good Walking Buddy] VETERINARY CARE: [Routine] LEVEL OF TRAINING NEEDED: Lana is well-versed in her basic cues, already knowing `sit`, `down`, and `paw`! She has a tendency to pull on the leash during walks, but is quick to learn with positive reinforcement. Positive reinforcement training will help Lana to not only expand her understanding of basic cues & skills, but also help her to bond with her new owner while building confidence. [Minimal] GROOMING: Routine brushing will help to minimize shedding in the home. [Minimal]

Breed overview
Overview:
A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
