Description
Dog Breed: Australian Shepherd. Meet Phyllis, a smart, beautiful, and incredibly affectionate Aussie who is looking for her forever home. This "velcro dog" thrives on being near her people and loves nothing more than snuggling up with you at night. Phyllis is a dream to have in the house; she is fully house-trained, rarely barks, and is generally calm and relaxed indoors. While she is high-energy and needs daily exercise to stay happy, she walks nicely on a leash and already knows commands like "Sit" and "Leave it". She is a friendly girl who loves meeting new people, though she can be a bit of a "counter-surfer" if she smells something tasty and might jump up when she gets excited. Phyllis is a playful pup who particularly enjoys toys with dangly parts. When it comes to other dogs, she is currently best friends with a smaller foster sibling, spending long periods running and playing in the yard. She can be nervous around dogs larger than she is, but her foster notes that she improved a lot with them over time and just needs a patient introduction. She tends to ignore cats and hasn't yet been around children while in her foster home. Phyllis is not currently crated and settles in beautifully without one. If you are looking for a loyal, smart companion who will be your shadow and your best friend, Phyllis is ready to meet you. This dog is up to date on vaccinations and is spayed or neutered. (Please note: Puppies under 3 months old may not be sterilized prior to adoption. If this is the case, your adoption coordinator will provide guidance on the process.) To adopt or learn more about this dog, you must complete an adoption application, which can be found on our website: .sandypawsrescue. PLEASE READ: • If a dog or puppy is listed, they are currently available for adoption. However, they may already be pending an adoption, and their profile may not yet reflect this. • All information is accurate to the best of our knowledge as of the posting date. • Unless explicitly stated, Sandy Paws Rescue does not guarantee the breed of any dog. Breeds listed are educated guesses made by shelter staff, volunteers, or veterinarians. Many of our dogs are mixed breeds, often with pit bull-type genetics, resulting in a wide variety of physical traits and temperaments. Our dogs come from various situations, such as kill shelters, owner surrenders, or as strays. It is likely both parents were mixed breeds as well. Sandy Paws Rescue does not have a public shelter in Massachusetts. Our dogs reside in private foster homes or boarding kennels in the South until adopted. Many dogs are spoken for prior to transport or release from state-mandated isolation. For information on adoption fees, procedures, or FAQs, visit our website: .sandypawsrescue. The FIRST step in adopting from Sandy Paws Rescue is to submit a completed adoption application.

Overview:
The Australian Shepherd, despite its name, actually originated in the western United States during the 19th century, bred primarily for herding livestock on ranches. These striking dogs are medium-sized with a sturdy build, often sporting captivating merle coats (blue or red) and piercing blue, amber, or marbled eyes, sometimes with two different colors (heterochromia). Known for their exceptional intelligence and high energy, Aussies possess a strong work drive and thrive on having a "job" to do, whether it's agility, obedience, or extensive exercise. Their temperament is generally loyal, affectionate, and good-natured with their families, though they can be reserved with strangers. Due to their high exercise requirements and need for mental stimulation, they are best suited for active families or individuals with ample outdoor space and a commitment to training; apartment living is generally not ideal. Potential owners should also be aware of common health concerns like hip and elbow dysplasia and certain eye conditions, including Collie Eye Anomaly (CEA) and Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA).
