Description
Dog Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (medium coat). Meet Velma, the 3 year old grey pitbull with the cutest little underbite! Velma came to the shelter as a stray so we donât know much about her previous history. Here at the shelter she has proven herself to be a very sweet girl. The volunteers have notes that she loves butt-scratches and is a good walker! So far Velma has shown that she isnât a huge fan of her shelter-mates so far, so she may do better as a solo dog who gets all the attention. If you are looking for a darling little pittie to be your best friend, come down and meet Velma today! Please note: Our Santa Cruz locationâs Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end âmeet and greetsâ (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If youâd like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.

Breed overview
Overview:
A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
