Description
Dog Breed: Poodle (unknown type) / Mixed. Toby is the sweetest, derpiest doodle looking for a home that will be patient with him, continue building his confidence, let him stare lovingly into your soul, and be ready for LOTS of love. He loves to stay by your side, play with other dogs, fetch, sniff for his food, train, relax while you work, or snuggle like it's his full time job. If his foster parents didn’t have such a crazy travel-heavy lifestyle, this absolutely would’ve been a foster fail. He plays incredibly well with his border collie foster sibling (who is very selective about playmates) and is so submissive for such a big noodle of a dog. When playtime is over, he also understands how to coexist calmly and peacefully. Toby has a timid and sometimes anxious demeanor, but every single day makes huge progress with things that scare him. His resilience would make anybody proud. He was able to calmly relax while his fosters had a full bathroom demolition happening in the house. Every day he gets more confident, playful, curious, and independent. He’s a VERY fast learner and just an incredibly smart, intuitive boy overall. ANIMALS + PEOPLE: Toby can be skeptical around new people and animals at first, but with the right introductions (especially when he’s around people he trusts), he warms up quickly and beautifully. SEPARATION: He's a velcro dog at the moment and has some separation anxiety, but he’s making great progress with proper training and slow, steady confidence-building that respects his comfort level. POTTY: Very well potty trained, especially when he has easy access to an outdoor space. CRATE: Toby was initially terrified of the crate, but after just a few days of positive-association crate training, he now goes in willingly to nap during work meetings and sees it as one of his safe spaces. He slept in the crate with the door closed on his third night with us. HANDLING: He’s extremely tolerant of handling — paws, ears, mouth, eyes, all of it — which will make regular grooming much easier for whoever is lucky enough to adopt him. Toby is neutered, microchipped, up to date on vaccinations, dewormed, and started on monthly flea/heartworm prevention. His adoption fee is $500 and you can apply to adopt at mpravl All Mountain Pet Rescue (Asheville) animals are up-to-date on vaccinations, spayed/neutered and micro-chipped before adoption. Contact the foster parent or Mountain Pet Rescue at petsmpravl for more information. Please note that visual breed identification of companion animals has been proven to be unreliable, so for most of our animals we provide a best guess at predominant breed or breed mix. We get to know each of our animals as an individual and do our best to describe and place pets based on personality not breed label. Mountain Pet Rescue is a 501(c)(3) non-profit tax deductible charity (EIN 82-3039637) located in Asheville, NC.

Breed overview
Overview:
A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
