Description
Dog Breed: German Shepherd Dog. Phoenix is a sweet little guy, recovered from being parvo positive. He is working on crate and potty training. He likes people and greets nicely without jumping. He spent his first 5 weeks being fostered with his brother Ranger. Then it was decided that they needed to seperated to avoid bonding too much with each other. He's new to being on leash but is interested in the world and not frightened by it. He joined us at our Annual Meeting where everyone got some puppy time. He'll need a home dedicated to training, because all the GSDs need that. Phoenix needs an adopter who is puppy approved. Energy Level 4-Shep on a Mission: This dog needs daily exercise, training, and play. They will need to be taught to settle. S/he may be destructive if not exercised/worked enough. All puppies under 8 months are Level 4. Temperament Level 4-In addition to Level 3 behaviors (Comfortable with most people, may be under-socialized, may have some prey drive, separation anxiety, and/or leash reactivity, and may not be suitable for small children. Takes well to training): Cautious, may not be comfortable with all types of people, has fear or anxiety issues, wary of other dogs. Needs a skilled handler with GSD experience.

Overview:
The German Shepherd Dog, a truly iconic breed, originated in Germany in the late 19th century, primarily for herding sheep. They are easily recognizable by their athletic, medium-to-large build, typically weighing between 50-90 pounds, with a distinct double coat that can be black and tan, sable, or solid black. Known for their intelligence and loyalty, German Shepherds possess a remarkably trainable and courageous temperament, making them exceptional working dogs in fields like police and service work. While generally good with families when properly socialized, their high energy levels and need for mental stimulation make them unsuitable for apartment living without significant daily exercise. Prospective owners should be aware of common health concerns such as hip and elbow dysplasia, as well as degenerative myelopathy, underscoring the importance of responsible breeding and regular veterinary care.
