Posted Breed: Rottweiler / Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler / Mixed (short coat). Pet Allies in Show Low AZ Midget is a 3 year old black male mix or Rottweiler and Australian Cattle dog who is house-trained, very active and very friendly. Midget is good with other dogs and with older children, current with vaccinations, neutered and has his micro-chip. He shows arthritis in rear legs (likely from some past injury) so would need a soft bed and perhaps winter pain medication. Midget is best not left alone unless crated - he has been okay when left with other dogs, having full range of house but a small room and no company leads to destructive behavior. Midget is living with one of our Foster Families - please call 928 537-8009 to arrange an appointment to meet him. Adoption fee $75.00. A home visit may be part of the adoption process. To start the adoption process, an online adoption application is available at http://www.petalliesaz.org/dogadopt.php Pet Allies, also known as the home of the Barkin Basement Thrift Store at the corner of White Mountain Road and Fawnbrook in Show Low, finds non-lethal solutions to pet overpopulation by offering low-cost spay/neuter services and placing homeless pets in caring homes. Pet Allies, a non-profit organization, is funded by donations from the community, sales at the Barkin Basement Thrift Store, grants and adoptions. In October 2012 Pet Allies also entered into a contract with the City of Show Low to operate the City’s animal control shelter where animals may be seen and adopted. If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Retriever / Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler / Mixed (short coat). Adoption Fee: $75.00. Pet Allies in Show Low AZ Lucky Charm is an 8 year old brown/white female mix of Retriever/Australian Cattle Dog. She has been staying with a foster family on weekends and they have spent a lot of time with her in a home environment and offer these observations: “Lucky Charm is very gentle, affectionate and loyal. She loves to cuddle and watch tv. We’ve heard her bark only twice but, otherwise, she is a quiet companion. She is housetrained and has not had any accidents though she does have some involuntary leakage. Aside from taking her for walks, we manage her incontinence with canine diapers (which we will donate to the adoptive family). During her walks she has exhibited nothing but friendliness when encountering other dogs and people. Lucky Charm is on medication to help with incontinence and we are hopeful we may see improvement in this area. Though our household situation is not equipped to provide her with a permanent home, we hope the right person or family will provide her with a forever home.” Lucky Charm, i f left alone outside, may dig out. She likes to be with people! Adoption fee $75.00. Domestic animals ready for adoption are healthy, current with vaccines, have been altered and received their micro-chip. She's smart, bossy, happy, playful, Cute, and one BIG handful. Mayzee came to Pet Allies with mange, one badly hurt leg that had to be amputated, and one leg that had grown curvy, due to dragging the bad leg. Mayzee is currently doing water physical therapy, using a wheelchair, and trying to strengthen the one remaining curvy rear leg.
