Posted Breed: Shih Tzu. Ideal Home- Fenced yard required. Quiet low traffic home works best for Teddy. A family familiar with feeding grain-free food is ideal due to Teddy's history of some food allergies. Meet Teddy, a 3 year old Shih Tzu mix. Teddy is so sweet that if strangers enter the home he will walk up to them and give them a kiss. He is sweet and affectionate and would thrive with someone who loves to cuddle him and give him kisses. He's really a big teddy bear who is just waiting to give his heart and soul to a special person. Teddy loves to run outside in a fenced yard and play with toys. Although he enjoys having other dogs around for company, he would do fine as an only dog. Teddy is used to going in the backyard for potty breaks. He's been known to have a few accidents on the outdoor deck but it's easy enough to clean up and wash off with some soap. Teddy goes on walks but is used to the backyard for most of his breaks out so we're hoping to find him a fenced yard to avoid accidents. Walking him on leash is not a problem but we offer the advice about the yard to ensure a smoother transition since this is what he is used to. He's on a grain free food that helps keep him healthy. Contact us to meet this Teddy Bear. We want to provide as much information about our foster dogs, but sometimes it’s hard to do in the simple dog biography listed above. CHR will list the Ideal Home section to help applicants better understand what the rescue and foster parents are looking for this particular rescue dog’s future home. Please, take a minute to read the Ideal Home section .

More About Shih Tzu Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Yorkshire Terrier Yorkie (medium coat). About AGE: 7-8 years old ENERGY LEVEL: Medium MEDICAL HISTORY: Healthy. Recently had a full dental and eye surgery. Ideal home: A quiet home where someone can let her outside every few hours during the day. Marigold is not leash trained so we are requiring a securely fenced yard. Meet Marigold! This 6-pound Yorkie was found abandoned on the side of the road with several other dogs. Marigold is quiet and easy-going and gets along well with other dogs. She is sweet and a bit shy but warms up quickly. When she is excited (like when her food is on the way) she twirls around and dances with joy! She had most of her teeth removed during a recent dental and requires soft food. The dental left her with the cutest lopsided smile and sideways kisses! Marigold is not leash-trained and would do best in a home with a fenced yard. She needs to be let out every few hours during the day but sleeps through the night without any accidents. She usually does her business within minutes of being let out. Marigold is a sweetheart and deserves to have a wonderful life with a new family.

      Breed: Shih Tzu
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Shih Tzu. Sadie is a true gem. She came to CHR in rough shape from a local shelter but, after a few months in our care, she’s really thriving. Her right eye was injured in her last home and she lost her vision in the eye but that hasn’t slowed her down one bit. Sadie is very sweet and affectionate—she loves to cuddle and sit by your side. She bounces around the house happy and full of playfulness, racing back and forth when she is excited. Sadie loves to snuggle and may bug you for a back massage. She zooms around the house when she is happy. You will become Sadie's world once she is in your home. She is quiet and easy going. A very low maintenance dog. She's just a typical Shih Tzu Princess. Sadie does fine around other dogs but she is a little timid and may trot away from a dog who is showing her any interest. We're giving preference to adoptive homes without other dogs or with only one dog who will co-exist without any interaction with her. Sadie dislikes being groomed so her foster mom has been working with her to reduce her reaction to grooming. She's making good progress but a groomer who takes their time and has experience working with dogs who dislike grooming is best for her. With time, Sadie will become more comfortable with being groomed but we need to make sure you understand that she needs time to build trust in her groomer. As a service to our adopters, our groomer in Springfield, VA offers a DISCOUNTED rate to CHR adopters whose dogs are anxious during grooming. IDEAL HOME FOR SADIE: Sadie is used to going out in a secure fenced yard every few hours for potty breaks. Without these regular breaks, she will go indoors. To avoid daily accidents, Sadie needs a home with someone home part of the day or a home that is willing to employ a licensed dog walker to let her out in a secure fenced yard. A securely fenced yard is highly desirable since Sadie is used to using one for potty breaks in her foster home. To make grooming easier and safer, Sadie’s adopter should be willing to drive to our groomer to Springfield, VA in case she needs a special groomer during her transition over the first six months in her adoptive home. Sadie uses a pee pad sometimes. LINK to Sadie's Application- https://fs8.formsite.com/Caringhearts/form10/index.html

Posted Breed: Shih Tzu / Brussels Griffon / Mixed (long coat). About Bodhi AGE-3 years old Energy level- -Medium Medical history-Healthy. Ideal home- Bodhi would do best in a quiet low stress all adult home. A dog walker is needed if working full time. Meet Bodhi! This little guy only weighs 10 pounds and is house trained. Sweet Bodhi is a recent arrival. He is very playful and loves to jump on your lap for cuddles.(female foster) While Bodhi is a loving little guy, he does show signs of stress in response to certain triggers. For example, Bodhi will bark at men he doesn’t know. CHR is also requiring that the home Bodhi goes to is an all-adult low-traffic home where his fear triggers will be reduced (we describe this as a “Zen” atmosphere—see below.) Bodhi's adopter will receive free dog training. Bodhi has really made himself at home at his foster parents. He loves the yard and has no problem going out for potty breaks. He loves to play and will sometimes bark at his foster mom to throw a toy for him to fetch. He loves giving kisses and you will become his whole world once he's with you. What is a "Zen" atmosphere? 1. A home with only adults, no young children. We like children but in certain cases as in the case of Bodhi, who is stressed from recent and possibly past mental trauma, a home without children is the safest way to ensure that no incidents of nipping or biting occur. 2. A quiet neighborhood with low foot traffic where you can walk Bodhi Example: an apartment building with narrow hallways and lots of people walking by is the opposite of low foot traffic. Visit our policies page at http://www.caringheartsrescue.org/policies' Meet Bailey. Bailey came from a MD Shelter very scared. These little babies can be traumatized from all the noise and scary things that can happen at a shelter so we understand why he was so upset when we got him. He's a bouncy and fun little guy now but we think he still needs a quiet all-adult-home to thrive in. Bailey loves to snuggle and will run around the house looking for attention. He’s a little fella at only 8 pounds. Cutest dog ever! He enjoys walks but can be barky at strangers. CHR will provide adopters with hands-on-training help for any behavior quirks our foster dogs have. Bailey is not the biggest fan of other dogs. If another dog is grouchy with him he will respond grouchy right back at them! A home without dogs or a home with a mellow dog is best Application- https://fs8.formsite.com/Caringhearts/form10/index.html

Posted Breed: Unknown breed. About Peanut AGE-6 years old Energy level- Low Medical history- UTD Ideal home- Peanut needs a potty break every 4-6 hours ; Peanut would do best in an all adult home with minimum traffic. Because Peanut has a history of being stressed at the shelter, his new owners will need to have multiple behavioral consultations(free) with a CHR positive dog trainer . We are asking for an experienced dog owner for Peanut. Peanut is NOT displaying any serious behavioral concerns in his foster home right now but we need to make sure he is placed in an all-adult home to be safe. CHR Policies- Please understand that CHR does not adopt out the DC-Metro area or to homes with children under 11 years old. No exemptions. Visit our policies page at http://www.caringheartsrescue.org/policies Meet Peanut! Peanut came from a Maryland shelter. This little munchkin has been through a lot. Peanut was terrified at the shelter and snapped at people a few times. However, CHR has Peanut in a quiet foster home will low foot traffic and he is doing FANTASTICALLY there. We think he was very stressed in the shelter environment and he will do fine in a all adult home. Peanut is such a character. He lies on his back for belly rubs. When you’re lying in bed, he likes to crawl on your chest and cover your face with kisses. It's why we named him “the Kissy Monster!” Peanut LOVES to play. He will play with toys for as long as he can and sometimes bark at his foster mom asking for more play time. Peanut is housetrained and has no accidents. In his current foster home, Peanut uses a securely fenced yard for elimination purposes. Peanut enjoys walks. Peanut was diagnosed with dry eye. He will need to stay on cyclosporine daily FOR LIFE to treat the dry eye condition. The cost per month to treat dry eye is $35.00. The medication is specially compounded at a pharmacy, which is the cheapest option. CHR is requiring that Peanut goes to an experienced dog owner. A home without kids is better suited for Peanut. Peanut just needs a quiet home setting to relax while he recuperates from all the stress of losing his home and the trauma of being at the shelter for a few weeks. If you have a quiet home setting with a relaxed “Zen” atmosphere, please email us for more information. CHR will provide Peanut’s new owner with a positive reinforcement trainer for no charge. We want to make sure his new parent is happy and feeling confident that they have all the information needed to make sure Peanut leads a stress-free and pawsitive life. What is a "Zen" atmosphere? 1. A home with only adults, no young children. We like children but, in certain cases as in the case of Peanut, who is stressed from recent and possibly past mental trauma, a home without children is the safest way to ensure that no incidents of nipping or biting occur. 2. A quiet neighborhood with low foot traffic where you can walk Peanut. An example of a setting that does not have low foot traffic is an apartment building with narrow hallways and lots of people walking by.
