Posted Breed: Siberian Husky / Siberian Husky / Mixed. Zara is a 9 month old Siberian Husky puppy. She has been with us since Early June when she was only 10 weeks old. She was abandoned by a backyard breeder who stated she was the last of the litter and they couldn't sell her. Her little body was flea infested and covered in ticks that made her anemic due to all the loss of blood. We pulled her into emergency rescue, not only did she need lots of TLC but the shelter was very full so they had no space for her. Zara came to us scared and very dirty, it was clear she had been living outside and was not socialized. We gave her 3 baths and picked off a ton of ticks. Then gave her meds to kill off the fleas and ticks that remained. Over the next few days Zara felt much better and started coming out of her shell. Zara had unique markings on her coat. She is considered a piebald husky. This means she has a rare genetic trait that gives her a different pattern on her coat. Many people do not know what a piebald husky is, because it's pretty rare. :-) Because of this we believe she was the leftover puppy not only because of her eye, but because she didn't look like your standard husky. Sadly Zara was born with a glaucoma on her right eye. This means bacteria got inside her little eye before her eyes opened ruining her chance at every seeing out of that eye. Because of this we gave her eye drops until she was old enough for her eye surgery. She had eye surgery in early Aug, and was spayed at the same time. She did wonderful with the surgery, and bounced right back to her normal, husky howling, energetic self the next day. She didn't even let her e-collar cone get in the way. She truly has the best spirit! Since being in foster we have noticed Zara is shy in new places, and around new people. She will back away and observe the situation. Having another dog around who is more outgoing brings out the best in Zara. Becuase of this her new home is required to have another active outgoing dog. Zara is great on leash, crate trained, and house trained. She does need work on resource guarding bones from other dogs. Her resource guarding is not major, and with some work I think this issue will go away. Zara is looking for a home who can give her lots of walks and adventures! She needs a 6ft fenced yard since she is an energetic husky. She will likely grow to be able to jump a 4ft fence. She is cat, and dog friendly. Zara would do better with older respectful kids. Her new family should also be willing to do basic obedience training with her. Zara is a chewer being a puppy and cannot be left alone unless crated. Husky experience is a plus. Zara is spayed, up to date on vaccines, on monthly heartworm/flea tick meds and ready to go home with you! If you have additional questions please email Megan her foster mom at MegansHuskies@gmail.com. If you wish to adopt please fill out an application we will contact you for a meet and greet after your application is processed. Her adoption fee is $225.

Siberian Husky

A.K.A. : Chukcha, Chuksha
Overview: The Siberian Husky is very similar in looks to the Alaskan Malamute, yet somewhat smaller in build and not quite as bold. Still, he needs a strong-willed owner who will stay in control. This dog loves to roam and explore, so he needs a nice big yard.
Breed Group: Working
Weight (lbs): male: 45-60, female: 35-50
Height (in): male: 21-23.5, female: 20-22
Colors: All colors from black to pure white.
Coat: Coat is double-layered and medium-length. The guard hairs of the outer coat are straight and somewhat smooth lying. The undercoat is soft and dense and of sufficient length.
Character: Siberian Huskies are not particularly good watch dogs, because they want to befriend everyone they meet. They love to roam and are full of energy and independence.
Temperament: This breed gets along well with other Huskies, but they need to be trained carefully if they're to be kept with other household pets. They will not get along with cats or other small animals, though they do well with children.
Care: Its coat needs brushing one or two times a week, daily during periods of heaviest shedding.
Training: This breed is very intelligent and independent. Handlers should take this into consideration and use patience and understanding during training.
Activity: The Siberian Husky needs to be involved in physical activities and requires a well-fenced yard. If they are not kept active, they can be very destructive and noisy.
Country of Origin: Russia
Health Issue: This breed is relatively healthy, but some have heart disease and eye problems, along with dermatitis.
Life Expectancy: 11-13

More About Siberian Husky Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Breed: Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Husky / Husky / Mixed. Alaska is a 6 yr old Siberian Husky who ended up in one of the local shelters. He is 62lbs, but needs to gain some weight as he is on the skinny side. Alaska was used for breeding all of his life until he was surrendered by his breeders recently for having high prey drive with small animals. Alaska is a gentle giant. We think he likely lived his life in a kennel. He is just now getting used to being in a home. He is fearful of loud noises, and will submissively pee if you approach him too quick. But he loves being around other dogs his size. Alaska has a deep husky howl, that can be very loud. When Alaska first came to us he was a big matted up fluff ball! We had a very kind groomer donate their services to help him. Although you should never shave a husky, we didn't have much of a choice in his case. When he was groomed the groomers found a wire stuck on his underside that had been poking through his skin for some time. Thankfully no major damage was done. Even though his is not as fluffy as he once was his fur will grow back long and healthy! In his ideal home he would have an owner who is willing to teach him some basic obedience, and reinforce going potty outside. Alaska is crate trained, and can be crated when not supervised. He can jump a 6ft fence, for this reason he is looking for a home without a fence where he will be leash walked only!! He is a very active boy who needs daily walks. Because of his long hair he will need groomed on a regular basis as well. If you think Alaska is the one for you please fill out an application using this link: https://www.secondchancenc.org/adopt-a-pet/dog-adoption-application/?src=sidebar. If you have additional questions please email the Dog Program Manager at laura@secondchancenc.org.

      Breed: Italian Greyhound-Plott Hound Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Young
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Italian Greyhound / Plott Hound / Mixed. Hi my name is Cleo and I am a very loving little gal that can't wait to find a family to call my own! I am around 2 years old and weigh about 24 pounds. My foster mom wanted to name me Egypt because I remind her of the Egyptian dog statues, but instead decided to name me Cleopatra aka Cleo! I like my new name, as I too think I'm a queen. I am extremely people friendly and love to be held and give kisses. Foster mom picks me up like a baby and I wash her face with kisses when she lets me! I've never understood why she goes and washes her face again after I do it but she does it every time. Humans are weird... Foster mom is trying to teach me not to jump out of excitement when I meet new people but it is still a work in progress. I am dog selective and tend to prefer larger dogs to smaller dogs. With a slow introduction, I do well with pretty much all male dogs my size or bigger, and most large females. My best friend, that already got adopted, name was Brownie! We ran around my foster mom's backyard like there was no tomorrow! I get new friends a lot at this home but keep hoping my forever will come along! I love children of all sizes, but I would prefer to go to a home with older children (pre-teen - teenagers) or to a kid-free home because of my high energy. I am not good with cats. I am crate trained and potty trained and I love to snuggle on the couch! If given a little time, I could be left in the house without a crate. I am an escape artist and got out of the fence at one of my foster mom's friend's house. Luckily, I am not a darter but just to be safe I should not be left unattended in the back yard unless it is very secure! Speaking of backyards... I would love to go to a home with a big back yard to play in. Currently I have a large back yard and am trained to use a doggy door. I have leash aggression that has improved while I've been with my foster mom, but it still has a long way to go. For the time being I would prefer to get my exercise in the backyard with my family or on walks where there are not a lot of other dogs. I love to walk but I get way too excited when I see a strange dog and I do not seem nice when that happens. I would benefit greatly from an owner that is dog savvy and willing to spend extra time with me on socialization/training related to my leash aggression. I am up to date on vaccines, microchipped, spayed, heartworm negative, and on monthly flea/tick and heartworm prevention. My adoption fee is $275. If you have additional questions about me please contact my foster mom at laura@secondchancenc.org. If you would like to apply to adopt me please do so using this link: Adoption Application I can't wait to meet my forever family because I have so much love to give! Could it be you??? Posted Breed: Plott Hound / Plott Hound / Mixed. Natasha is a beautiful plott hound brindle mix! She was found as a stray with her 3 pups, and was malnourished and sick when Second Chance took her in. She was an amazing mom to her three pups, but was happy to be separated when the time came! Natasha came to us as a heartworm positive baby, but she has since been through treatment and is on the mend. Natasha is looking for a forever home where she will get lots of attention and be able to hang out with her people! Natasha is very sweet, and she'll follow you around waiting patiently for petting or even kind words. She is housebroken and though interested in household trinkets, does a pretty good job learning what is a dog toy vs what is not, She is wonderful with all people, and loves kids. She loves laying by your side on a dog bed (or your bed), and joining you for a walk. She needs some training in terms of barking - as she'll bark when dogs pass by or there is commotion in the street, and it's hard to distract her. She's good on leash, though she will pull if she sees a squirrel, and seems genuinely thankful for the time and attention received. She relishes romping in the back yard and rolling around in the leaves and grass! Natasha is spayed, up-to-date on vaccines, microchipped, on monthly flea/tick and heartworm preventatives, and has been dewormed. Her adoption fee is $275. If you have questions about Natasha, please contact the Dog Program Manager at laura@secondchancenc.org. Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Terrier / Terrier / Mixed. Bodhi is a beautiful mix of Basenji and Pit Bull. Bodhi is very affectionate and looking for lots of love. He enjoys car rides and road trips and still gets excited every time the mailman comes, and of course he loves belly rubs! Bodhi is currently looking for a home with no small children, due to his high energy and unfamiliarity with them. He is house trained and enjoys his crate. He will also respect your space on the couch or the bed and instead entice you to snuggle on the floor. Bodhi enjoys the company of small dogs and loves to play at doggy day care. He will also impress you with his ability to sit, lay down, roll over and play dead! During the day, all he needs is a warm spot to lay in the sun. And don't let his age fool you! He still has lots of energy! He loves to be outside and requires a fenced in yard at his new home. He has some leash reactivity/aggression, making it less than ideal to have to walk him every time he needs to go potty. He does do well on a leash when no other people or dogs are around, but has nipped before when he sees new people/things while on leash, hence the required fenced in back yard. He's a protector by nature and given the chance he'll steal your heart. Because he is a protector and does not always pick up on cues from the family, he will need to be crated when guests come over. He gets nervous with new people, so he is better off being separated from them than potentially fear nipping when he feels uncomfortable. Bodhi is neutered, up-to-date on vaccinations, has been dewormed, is microchipped, and current on flea/tick and heartworm prevention. His adoption fee is $275. If you have additional questions, please contact the Dog Program Manager at laura@secondchancenc.org. Posted Breed: Husky / Husky / Mixed. Phoenix is a 2.5 yr old Siberian Husky. He is one handsome, but high maintenance ball of fluff! Phoenix came from a shelter by the coast about a year ago. Due to him not doing well when being vaccinated he needed a rescue to secure his safety from the county shelter. We have worked with his fears, but Phoenix remains very fearful of the vet! He has to be muzzled, or he will bite out of fear. He also is not a fan of being groomed. He has very long fluffy hair, and if not groomed it can get matted. Although he does well with baths, hes not a fan of being groomed. He will need groomed a few times a year to help keep him looking his best. When it comes to other dogs Phoenix loves to play with dogs his size! He does not do well with smaller dogs, or small animals. He will harass another dog until they give in and play with him, so if you have another playful dog they will likely be buddies! In his current foster home he lives with several other huskies and does well with them. They often play in the fenced in backyard where Phoenix enjoys playing in mud puddles, and digging holes. Because he is a very active Siberian Husky he will need an owner to match his energy! A 6ft fenced yard at his new home is required. An owner who understands the breed is also a must, Phoenix is not a good fit for first time dog owners. A playmate in the home is a plus. Phoenix is crate trained, and house trained (but may submissive pee if he gets scared). He does pull on leash, but walks well with an easy walk harness. He can be vocal when in the crate if he gets bored, but is usually quite throughout the night unless he needs to go potty. Special diet is required for Phoenix. He has a chicken allergy and cannot eat any dog foods that contain chicken. He is used to a grain free, and chicken free diet. If you have additional questions about Phoenix please reach out to his foster mom Megan at MegansHuskies@gmail.com if you are ready to apply to adopt please fill out an adoption form. After filling out the adoption form it will be processed by the application team, and once approved the foster parent will reach out for a home visit/meet and greet to see if you might be a good fit. Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Chihuahua / Mixed. Meet Pitufo! Pitufo came from a multiple dog household, and it seems that having a doggy companion helps keep him grounded. Pitufo is a sweet young pup, at about 2 years old and weighs 10ish pounds. Pitufo is a very affectionate boy that loves to snuggle. While in foster care, he has a very structured routine and does really well with everyone that visits. He did go on a home trial with a potential adopter and he became very attached to his main caregiver with whom he spent all his days with, and began to be protective over her. He will require owners that are willing to give him the structure he needs so that he is the best version of himself possible! He is a little nervous with new dogs at first, but once he knows they won't hurt him, he really enjoys the company! Pitufo is a big kisser and would love the chance to shower his new owner with smooches! Pitufo is seeking an adult only home since he seems to attach himself to adults more than children. Pitufo is crate trained, and will need some reinforcement with potty training since he was not potty trained at his original home, however, he much prefers to do his business outside! Pitufo was surrendered after his family found themselves with too many dogs because they did not spay and neuter their pets. With the support of Second Chance, the family is now committed to spaying all of their females to prevent future pregnancies in the future. Pitufo is neutered, up to date on vaccines, microchipped, has been dewormed, and is current on his monthly heartworm and flea/tick preventatives. His adoption fee is $275. To adopt Pitufo, please fill out an application on our website. If you have additional questions, please reach out to the Dog Program Manager at laura@secondchancenc.org.

      Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed. My name is Pork Chop and I am somewhere around 6 years old, according to the vet. I am a super laid back guy, who doesn't need much besides sleep. I love sleeping! My foster mom loves to give me butt scratches, because I lose control of my caboose and start to dance, as she calls it. I also love to sing when I get excited. I think my top three favorite things to do are sleep, always be with my human, and go on car rides! Sometimes I like to bury my toys outside under leaves and tree branches, (digging is too much work). I also like to hide my toys around the house too. My foster mom has found my stash of toys in the couch, under blankets and under rugs. I am house trained and crate trained, although I may try to escape my crate sometimes, so my crate has carabineer clips on it to keep me in. At night, I am fine though. I even get to sleep in the bed. I love cuddling up next to your feet or behind your legs. I do love to play too, just not for too long. My foster my doesn't allow me to have soft toys because I tear them up, but I love playing with my rope. I would rather just be a single dog, so I can get all of the love, but other dogs are okay. I have been fostered with a female dog as well as a male dog, and have done well with them both. I don't always like sharing my toys, though. I am very loving, and I just want to spend time with my human friend! It appears I didn't have the best home before I ended up in the shelter. I was found on the streets with some cuts on my face. My previous owners knew where I was, and they told the people who found me that they didn't want me anymore. Since I was living on the streets with no care, I ended up getting heart worms. I've already received treatment and around June, I can go back to see if they are all gone! While I was at the county shelter, I was one of the staff favorites! They worked hard to get a rescue to help me, and sure enough, Second Chance stepped up after my foster mama fell in love with my photo! I am neutered, up to date on vaccinations, microchipped, have been dewormed, and am on my monthly heartworm and flea/tick preventatives. My adoption fee is $275. Posted Breed: Husky / Husky / Mixed. Hi! My name is Phoebe and I am a very loving young girl! I am estimated to be about 2 years old and a husky something mix. I would make a great addition to a home with just women in it. Sometimes I get scared and anxious around men and boys, and act out with fear. I have been offered some free training sessions by a wonderful woman from Teamwork's, which I'll be starting in January 2018! These sessions are a starting point for me to overcome my fears, but it can take a long time. You see, I was owned by a young man that abandoned me and my puppies which is how I came to be in a foster program. It is unclear whether he was mean to me (though I was very malnourished), or whether I was just severely underaicialized with men other than him. I am grateful that he did give me up, because I really like having a full belly and a warm place to lay my head at night. I also love having lots of doggy playmates to romp around with! My foster home has lots of dogs in it and I get along with all of them. I do like to run and play so a home with another playful dog would be preferable but not required. I feel more confident when I have other dogs around but know I could build confidence as an only pet with a patient adopter. I love to get belly rubs and spend time chewing on yummy toys. If you come up to me and sweet talk me I will roll over on my back and ask for some scratches! Even though I was malnourished when I was taken in, I do not have any food aggression. I know how to sit, and I walk pretty well on a leash, but still have some learning to do. I do not like to hop into the car, but once I'm in I ride very well. At my foster Mom's house, I do not sleep in a crate, but I am okay in a crate if necessary in my new home. I managed to escape from a crate when I first got to my foster Mom's house, but I did not destroy anything and honestly just prefer to chill out with the other dogs or play with them when she is not home. I am also trained how to use a doggy door. Please consider making me your new best friend! I am a really awesome gal and am already spayed, up to date on shots, on monthly heartworm and flea/tick preventative, and microchipped! My adoption fee is $275 and applications can be filled out at secondchancenc.org. If you have any questions about me, please contact my foster mom At laura@secondchancenc.org You can also fill out an application to get the adoption process started. Posted Breed: Schnauzer / Schnauzer / Mixed. SPECIAL NEEDS DOG - Please read carefully before considering putting an application in for Gray. Gray aka Gracie is quite a stand out petite Schnauzer mix. Her coat and markings are as unique and beautiful as her personality. Gracie thrives in a home that is considerably quiet and free of young children. While she enjoys the company of a pet sibling that is small and energetic, Gracie will be happy as the sole focus of all the attention. She is a very smart, affectionate and loyal dog. Due to her past experience of suspected mistreatment, Gracie may initially meet with a guarded or snippy demeanor. Your patience, structured training and love are a slam dunk combination to surely win Gracie's heart. She enjoys playing with toys and entertaining herself with a tennis ball. When she is tuckered out, Gracie will quickly put herself to bed. Gracie has been diagnosed with kidney disease. It is well managed with a healthy diet, prescribed medication and bi-annual visits to a veterinarian. She has quite an appetite for all things healthy - sweet potato chips, banana and skinless chicken bites are top favorites. It is best that Gracie be allowed to potty with frequency as needed and not be left alone beyond four (4) hours. She LOVES to go for a ride and travel in the car! Gracie is perfect in her imperfections. She will love and follow you to the moon and back. She takes some time to trust anybody new in her life, but once she loves you, she really loves you! Having a fur buddy that is under 20lbs, that already knows the ins & outs may help her confidence. So do you have patients, understand a schnauzer attitude, are willing to continue medical care and possibly already have a small dog who is looking for a friend? Well then you may be a good fit for Gracie! Gracie is spayed, microchipped, up to date on vaccines, on my monthly flea/tick and Heartworms preventatives. Posted Breed: Hound / Hound / Mixed. Dancer is a beautiful girl with some rather specific needs. When she first entered the program, we quickly learned she had some pretty bad anxities. We were having trouble with house & crate training because she was so nervous about being left alone. So we decided medication was needed. The medication has helped so much. The one thing that is still important to know is that she refuses to crate and will do best in a home that will learn to trust her quickly and will leave things for her to chew on when alone. Being all alone is not good for her, having another dog is necessary. Having someone that is home all the time would be awesome for her, but in the foster home she is in now, that is not the situation. She currently lives in a home with a doggy door. This has been perfect for Dancer as she can take herself out to potty whenever she has to go, as well as allowing her the freedom to let her energy out by running laps around the yard at her leisure. While a doggy door is not necessary, a fenced in yard is. She is a big eater too! If she does not get enough food she will look for it on the counter and even in the refrigerator. Wow, right? Dancer comes with some pretty specific needs. However, she is one of the sweetest dogs you will ever meet. Loves having her huge floppy ears rubbed while cuddling during TV time. Will sit for a treat if she sees it in your hand. She loves to cuddle at night time. The road to becoming adoptable has been a long one for Dancer. She has come SO far since we pulled her from a rural shelter. Yes, she has a lot of needs in finding a forever home. But we know the right family will fall in love with this beautiful girl and her quirks will not matter to them.
