Posted Breed: Weimaraner (short coat). NELLY - Austin 5 yr old gray female Hi there! I am NELLY, a beautiful gray Weimaraner. I am a sweet girl who loves nothing more than to be loved on and rubbed on. Well, okay, my other favorite activity is chasing squirrels in the backyard. But, that is a close second to being loved on and petted. I am potty trained and get along well with kids. I do not get along with small dogs, but ones my size are just fine. I came into rescue with several lumps that looked like bad news to the vet. I had surgery (see my cone of shame picture?) to remove them and test them. The tests revealed that I had mast cell cancer and removal of those lumps mean removal of most of the cancer. I might have more lumps show up later in my life, but with medication and a watchful eye on my lumps, I can have many great years ahead of me. Especially if I find my forever family. My ideal family would continue to work with me on learning how to walk properly on a leash and also be willing to teach me many other cool things since I am a smart girl. They would also keep an eye on my health as I get older. Another dog in the family is a must for me as well. Would you consider giving me a forever home? Please ask about NELLY when you contact Weimaraner Rescue of Texas. For donations, please make your check payable to: Weimaraner Rescue of Texas, Inc. 4347 W. Northwest Hwy, Suite 130, Box 184 Dallas, TX 75220 Phone: (972) 994-3572 www.weimrescuetexas.org We gratefully accept donations of any amount to help our beautiful gray & blue friends in need. We are an all volunteer, 501(c)(3) non-profit, charitable organization. Donations are tax deductible as allowed by law. More About Weimaraner Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

My biggest goal in life is to please those around me. I love kids, dogs, the beach, camping, riding in cars and running around the yard. Oh I like to fetch too. I really don’t care to be left alone too long and PLEASE, DO NOT put me in one of those crate things. I can sleep on the floor (with a dog bed) but I really prefer to be with my family, wherever they are. I promise you lots of love and loyalty if you adopt me. I am totally healthy ready to find my family. I am being fostered in the Houston area. Please ask about BOWIE when you contact Weimaraner Rescue of Texas. Posted Breed: Weimaraner (short coat). Hello Weim World, I’m Shelby, an 8 yr old girl and I am looking for my forever home. I will quickly wriggle my way right to your heart! My awesome foster mom says that I am fantastic with people, new & old, whether at home, on the trail, or at the office. Sometimes I get to go to work with her, and I love it! Really, I have never met a stranger, I didn’t like, I like everyone! I have been loving my walks around Austin and since I am a proper lady I do walk politely with the use of a gentle leader. I have been non-reactive to other dogs or animals that I have met at on my daily outings and at the doggie daycare I attend. My foster mom is really active and can tell that I enjoy exploring the outdoors; a doggie door could be a great fit! Am I house trained you ask? Well yes I am, I told you I’m a lady. Sometimes though I do get anxious when you first leave me alone, so I would do best in a home that will work with me on this or one that has a doggie friend for me. I am just a sweet soul who would love to join your for cozy nights on a soft dog bed and sunshine-filled days outside. I almost forgot; I didn’t mention my most favorite thing in the world.....I love me some kongs! Here is some additional info my foster mom wants you to know, isn’t she great:) -AH-MAH-ZING with people. She has been a gracious welcoming presence -- even in a meeting with 10 people, all new situations (including a party I hosted at my house), friends who petsit her that she hadn't met. SHE IS A ROCKSTAR. -Not reactive at all to other dogs while walking. Sometimes when they bark at her, she gets surprised, but pretty much ignores them. Was a STAR also on the Town Lake Trail with so many dogs/humans about. -She rides in the car fine -LOVES her soft dog bed. -Enjoys fetch (but doesn't know "drop") I am healthy too! Isn’t that great? I am all ready to find my forever home, will it be with you? Please ask about SHELBY when you contact Weimaraner Rescue of Texas. Posted Breed: Weimaraner (short coat). Hi everyone, I’m Eli, a handsome 9 year old male with plenty of energy left. I came into rescue for a second time recently bc unfortunately my wonderful owner passed away. She loved me so much and made sure I would be taken care of. I am a very gentle boy with all people, but not so much with other dogs, though I am getting better. I’d just really prefer to be the only dog in my new home. My current foster family says I am a total angel. I do not counter surf or dumpster dive at all. Food, did someone say food? Well I am very food motivated and I know how to sit, stay and “get it”. Crates are not my thing , I do not like to be crated nor locked in a room by myself. I will gets very distressed and will cry and bite at the crate wires. I do love car rides and I am an excellent passenger if I do say do myself. I’m not really big into chasing the squirrels or rabbits when I sees them. I do however love and I mean LOVE to chasee the tennis ball. I LOVE to play fetch, and will bring the ball back to you and drop it at your feet. I will play fetch until you can no longer play. I promise I can outplay you. I am totally healthy and I am looking for a home where I am the only dog and my humans will play fetch with me! Please ask about ELI when you contact Weimaraner Rescue of Texas. For donations, please make your check payable to Weimaraner Rescue of Texas, Inc. 4347 W. Posted Breed: Weimaraner (short coat). Meet Schatzie a petite 56 pound, 8-year-old female who is the sweetest girl you will ever meet. She is very calm, chill, and loves her humans and foster brother. She prefers dogs that are submissive. She would love to sleep with you if you will let her, but she sleeps in her comfy bed on the floor and loves to be covered with a blanket. She is house trained and will let you know she needs to go out by sitting on the rug at the back door. She walks well on leash and loves to have her nose to the ground for the nearest rabbit or squirrel. If she finds a critter, you may have to wait a little while as she wants to go in for the chase. She is not crate trained but does well left to roam if you are not home. She will try to dumpster dive if garbage is left unattended. Schatzie needs a special family as she is diabetic and needs insulin injections with her meals twice a day. She also needs a special diet that caters to reduced sugars in her food, and she only gets certain snacks at certain times. Her foster family was new to diabetes and giving injections too, and they will be happy to teach the new family that adopts her. It’s easy! Schatzie was given the opportunity through the donations of many people to her YouCare page to have vision surgery since her diabetes had caused her to go blind. She can now see and is loving life with all her senses. It has been fun to see her personality emerge now that she can see. Even with these medical needs, she is the most loving and affectionate dog and still loves to go outside on walks with her humans. Take a chance on Schatzie. You won’t be disappointed as she will give you the best companionship ever! Please ask about SCHATZIE when you contact Weimaraner Rescue of Texas. She is house-trained and crate-trained, although she really doesn’t like to be in the crate if someone is at home. She will make sure that you know she is there and waiting to get out. She has been good with other dogs that are not alpha. She rides well in the car and gets excited if she sees the leash. She walks well on a leash and ignores other dogs in the vicinity. She is a good watch dog and will bark if she sees someone outside the house or at the door. Nikki sleeps in her bed in the room with her foster mom and will wake her up when she thinks it is time for breakfast. She is food motivated, but now knows to lay down and stay until told she can eat. She does have a large lipoma on her belly beside her left hind leg, but the vet has said it is not medically necessary to remove and doesn’t hinder her ability to run and play. Nikki deserves a good home for the rest of her years and will be an excellent companion. Please ask about NIKKI when you contact Weimaraner Rescue of Texas. Posted Breed: Weimaraner (short coat). Meet Sawyer, a gray 6 year old male, who is very laid back, except for when it is time to eat. He is a very calm chill dog (If you are looking for a calm weim – he’s your boy!). He uses a doggy door to go potty. Rarely barks at people or animals (totally ignores the Doberman that lives next door that barks at him). Responds well to guests entering your home (even small children) – no jumping only sniffing. Loves to just be with his people wherever you are, sleeping with you or hang out on the couch, but will sleep on his bed if you make him. He is learning that car rides are a good thing and can be fun. He is also learning how to properly walk on a leash, without pulling. He does ok meeting other dogs, as long as properly introduced. Sawyer suffers from some separation anxiety when left alone. He does pace inside and will drool at the back door, but is not destructive. He is learning how to occupy his time alone with treats and food puzzles. Sawyer is not a fan of the crate, he will try his best to get out of it. Sawyer is very food motivated and is doing well with his training. He will however, counter surf and dumpster dive in the garbage if it is left out. Sawyer's ideal forever home would be a home with older children and someone that is home the majority of the day. He does not require a lot of exercise, just a short walk every day would be great. He mostly just wants to be with you. Please ask about SAWYER when you contact Weimaraner Rescue of Texas. For donations, please make your check payable to: Weimaraner Rescue of Texas, Inc. 4347 W. He likes to just lounge around on his dog bed, or couch if you will allow him. He loves to be near his human but will go into the other room and sleep. He loves to eat and will let you know when its time for meals, just in case you forget! He likes his car rides, but need assistance getting in and out of the car. Dax has never met a stranger, human or dog. Dax is special because he has a bad back leg. It was decided to keep the leg instead of amputation, this is due to the fact that he still uses the leg. It typically does not bother him. On days that he is really active he may need a pain pill. After his meds help with the pain he is good to go again. He does not do well on floors that are slippery like wood and some tile. However does well when he is able to walk on a rug, or his blanket. Dax is looking for a relaxed, chill forever home. Posted Breed: Weimaraner (short coat). Gus is a handsome, gray Weimaraner with the most soulful eyes you'll ever see. This sweet boy had a rough life before coming into rescue and needs a routine, therapeutic environment to learn how to trust again. He already knows how to love, and will give it generously once you have gained his trust. The way Gus shows his fear is that he runs...he can be quite the escape artist. This can be remedied by taking him outside on a leash to do his business and then bringing him back inside. If you have a secure yard, Gus has learned how to use a doggy door, but he has been known to dig out, so it would need to be very secure. When spoken to, Gus will wag his little nub tail to let you know how much he is soaking in the attention. He is also a big fan of belly rubs. Gus will need another dog in his new home to show him how to trust and learn the ropes of living in a household. Gus's ideal family will be patient and gentle, and willing to overcome his fears and challenges, and with this sweet boy the rewards will be great. For more information about Gus, please fill out an application on our website.
