Description
Dog Breed: Black Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Delilah is a Black Lab mix, 13 1/2 years old (DOB: 11/2011). This 'senior' sweetheart is back at our shelter once again and needing a forever home. She has a short haired coat, gentle eyes and a ready ‘smile’. She is such a sweet girl, who loves to cuddle and get attention. Delilah is great with people and will be your best friend/loyal companion. She loves to go for walks, play in pools and her favorite treat just might be peanut butter! Delilah tends to be bossy/dominant with other female dogs. It's difficult to break them up, if they happen to get into a scuffle. She may be ok with older male dogs, or as an only dog in your household. Probably best to go to a home with older children as well. Delilah was apparently housetrained but we do recommend supervision in a new home, possibly crating her at night and when she is home alone in the day until she can be taught the house rules. If you are interested in Delilah, please call the Amarillo SPCA at 806-622-0555 or visit the shelter at 11901 S. Coulter.

Breed overview

                            Overview:
A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
