Description
Dog Breed: Poodle (unknown type) / Mixed (long coat). Meet Baxter! This gorgeous puppy was found running as a stray and brought to a local shelter that reached out to our rescue for help. Unvaccinated puppies face higher risks in shelters since their immune systems aren’t yet strong enough to protect them. Luckily, a wonderful foster couple, Emily and Raymond, opened their home to him. Over the past few weeks, Baxter has been thriving as part of their family pack, learning routines, gaining confidence, and mastering the art of home life. Still just a baby at 5 months old, Baxter is a naturally social pup who fit right in with his foster pack. He plays just the right amount with everyone, playful but never overwhelming. Baxter is an active, budding adolescent who would love a canine companion in his forever home. He’s confident enough to be an only dog too, as long as his family is active and committed to daily exercise and play. Baxter is fully crate trained and keeps his crate clean - Good boy, Baxter! He’s still mastering potty training and, like all puppies, needs frequent breaks. His foster parents have begun working on his leash skills with short practice walks in the yard while he finishes his vaccinations. Last week, he received his second round of shots and was the perfect patient: calm, friendly, and happily soaking up all the attention. Emily describes Baxter as a very friendly, slightly submissive pup. “He has met several visitors and is always excited to make new friends. He’s a little goofy and silly, but that’s part of what makes him so sweet!” This lovable pup will be coming to the DC metro area in early November. Apply today to welcome Baxter into your home! Breed overview

Overview:
A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
