Description
Dog Breed: German Shepherd Dog (medium coat). INFO: Wetherby is a sweet and loving dog. Playful, goofy, and smart(knows basic commands), he would make an easy transition into any family home. He enjoys long walks but is also content with a good nap. House-trained, potty-trained, and well-mannered around food. He may sometimes bark at new people in the home but settles well once he knows you. Overall, he behaves well on leash. He may pull moderately if he catches the sight or scent of a squirrel, we're working on it! Wetherby hasn't met other dogs up-close, but at a safe distance (5-6 feet) has not shown any signs of reactivity. On walks he has been tolerant of environmental things like motorcycles, sirens, loud cars, lawn mowers. Wetherby loves to go on car rides, and makes an excellent & respectful passenger. Additionally he tolerates bath time well, is crate trained, and has not made issue of being crated at night. He has shown some separation anxiety but his foster says that has much improved with some familiarization of the home and of his people's routine. He would likely do well in a home where his owners can be patient while he settles into a routine and adjusts to his new family. Once he gets settled in, he loves to be included in activities and spending time with his people. Please contact, PetFosterlongbeach.gov with inquiries to meet Wetherby!!

Overview:
The German Shepherd Dog, a truly iconic breed, originated in Germany in the late 19th century, primarily for herding sheep. They are easily recognizable by their athletic, medium-to-large build, typically weighing between 50-90 pounds, with a distinct double coat that can be black and tan, sable, or solid black. Known for their intelligence and loyalty, German Shepherds possess a remarkably trainable and courageous temperament, making them exceptional working dogs in fields like police and service work. While generally good with families when properly socialized, their high energy levels and need for mental stimulation make them unsuitable for apartment living without significant daily exercise. Prospective owners should be aware of common health concerns such as hip and elbow dysplasia, as well as degenerative myelopathy, underscoring the importance of responsible breeding and regular veterinary care.
