The Tale of Gertrude (Who Has the Loveliest "Tail" of All) In the classic story of Gertrude McFuzz, a sensitive little bird worried that she wasn't as flashy or noticed as the other birds around her. She tried to be something she wasn't—until she discovered that her quiet, gentle nature was her true magic all along.
Our sweet Gertie is the last of her litter, waiting patiently for her turn to fly the coop. She isn't the loudest puppy in the room, nor the most boisterous. But like Gertrude McFuzz, once you look past the hustle and bustle, you realize she is the most special girl in the flock.
The Gertie Standard: A Soft & Sensitive Soul: Gertie feels things deeply. She isn't interested in noisy city streets or high-traffic parks. Instead, she dreams of peaceful nature walks, sniffing the breeze, and taking in the world at her own calm pace.
Master of the Sunny Yard: Give Gertie a quiet, fenced-in backyard and a couple of favorite toys, and her sweet personality soars. She loves a joyful zoomie session, followed by professional-level lounging in a warm patch of grass.
Crate Optional, Snuggle Mandatory: Gertie is fully house-trained and crate-trained, but she doesn't need to be tucked away. She thrives when she can curl up into a cozy donut on her plush bed—or right against her favorite humans.
Friendly at Her Own Pace: Gertie is friendly with everyone she meets, including kids and other dogs! She just likes to take a gentle, polite moment to assess the room before stepping into the spotlight.
What Gertie Needs to Flap Her Wings: A Confident Canine Sidekick: Gertie loves other dogs! Having a confident, playful resident dog in the home would be great. She would also be willing to be the only dog with lots of human cuddles and regular doggie playdates.
A Predictable, Peaceful Nest: A calmer, structured home where she can count on daily routines and plenty of quiet affection.
Confidence-Building Obedience Classes: Positive, reward-based training classes are a wonderful way for Gertie to learn new cues, bond with her family, and build her inner confidence.
Gertrude McFuzz learned that she didn't need fancy feathers to be loved—she just needed a place where she truly belonged. If you have a soft spot for gentle hearts, sleek brindle coats, and sweet souls, apply to adopt Gertie today!
Quick Stat Check: Pros: House-trained, gentle, quiet, great with other dogs, world-class cuddle bug.
Cons: Will make you fall in love so fast your head will spin.
Medical Note: This puppy was born to a mother dog who was positive for heartworm disease and had circulating microfilaria. Microfilariae can be transmitted from mothers to unborn puppies through the placenta; these worms, however, will not develop in the puppy into adult heartworms because the heartworms must pass through a mosquito to fully develop. Microfilariae may live up to two years within the host dog in whom they were born, but they should be eliminated when the puppy received its first dose of heartworm preventative. This puppy has been given heartworm preventative regularly while in SOS care, but to ensure that any remaining microfilaria are fully eliminated and the risk to other dogs (via mosquitos) is minimized, SOS recommends that the puppy be kept on Advantage Multi or Parasedge (imidacloprid + moxidectin) for monthly heartworm preventative for at least the first three months after adoption. This product provides protection from heartworm disease as well as fleas, but another tick preventative (oral) should be used.
An adoption donation is required for each adoption; please see HERE for more information about this.

**Additional info you should know - For most of our dogs, we are only guessing at predominant breed or breed mix. We get to know each of our dogs as an individual and do our best to describe and place them based on personality not breed label. Some dogs may not yet be in New England, nor ready for immediate adoption. There may be additional vetting, quarantine, waiting periods and/or fees depending upon your state of residence. If you have questions or concerns on any of this, you can discuss this with your Adoption Counselor.
