Description
Dog Breed: Rat Terrier. ONLY AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION IN NEW JERSEY AND LOCAL SURROUNDING AREAS!!! If your application is a possible match, a volunteer will get back to you within 48 hrs. No inquiries, please, without an application. Birdie is a one year old rat terrier who was surrendered after her owner could no longer take care of her. She came to us extremely shy and shut down. She was petrified of any loud noise or sudden movements. Now that she has been in a foster home for a few weeks, she is coming out of her shell, running and playing with the other foster dogs and not tucking her little nubby tail between her legs. Although Birdie lives with other dogs, we believe she would be happy in a quiet adult only home as the only animal. She loves her foster mom and now enjoys pets, butt scratches and belly rubs. Birdie will need some more socializing work and some major TLC but she will be an amazing dog once she gains more confidence. If you are interested in Birdie, Please go to bfdaaa to complete an application.

Overview:
The Rat Terrier is a lively and intelligent American breed, originally developed in the early 20th century from a mix of Fox Terriers, Old English White Terriers, and other small terriers, primarily for farm work and pest control. These compact yet sturdy dogs typically weigh between 10-25 pounds and stand 10-18 inches tall, boasting a short, smooth coat that comes in a variety of patterns, often with large patches of color over white. Known for their energetic and inquisitive nature, Rat Terriers are remarkably adaptable and affectionate, making them excellent companions for active individuals or families. While their boundless energy necessitates regular exercise and mental stimulation, they can thrive in apartments provided their needs are met. Generally a healthy breed, they have a lifespan of 12-18 years, though some may be prone to patellar luxation or Legg-Calve-Perthes disease. Their friendly disposition and eagerness to please make them highly trainable and a joy to live with.
