Description
Dog Breed: Staffordshire Bull Terrier (medium coat). Sloth came into the shelter on 6/13 as a stray and has shown a high level of fear and stress since intake. He is currently struggling to adjust to the shelter environment, and his behavior becomes increasingly defensive when he feels pressured or handled. When undisturbed, Sloth can appear friendly, social, and engaged with handlers. However, this changes quickly when movement or physical handling is involved. Staff consistently note low growling, resistance to being moved, and clear discomfort when asked to stand, leash, or be physically guided. During a recent necessary sedation and handling event, Slothâs stress escalated significantly. He growled and snapped during restraint, and after sedation when staff attempted to return him to his kennel, he again snapped at a handler and redirected toward another staff member during leash removal. These highlight how quickly his tolerance for handling breaks down under pressure.Across multiple interactions, Sloth shows a repeating pattern: calm and social at rest, but increasingly reactive and defensive once handling is required. This makes routine care progressively more challenging.

Breed overview
Staffordshire Bull Terrier
A.K.A.: Stafford, Staffy, English Staffy, Staffie, Nanny Dog
Overview:
The Staffordshire Bull Terrier, affectionately known as a "Staffy," is a robust and agile breed originating from 19th-century England, bred for its strength and courage. Physically, they are compact and muscular, with a broad head, pronounced cheek muscles, and a short, smooth coat that comes in various colors. Despite their powerful appearance, Staffies are renowned for their affectionate and gentle nature, particularly towards children, earning them the nickname "nanny dog." They are intelligent, highly trainable, and thrive on human companionship, making them excellent family pets. Their relatively small size and moderate exercise needs mean they can adapt well to apartment living, provided they receive daily walks and mental stimulation. Generally a healthy breed, they can be prone to certain conditions like L-2-Hydroxyglutaric Aciduria (L2HGA), hereditary cataracts, and patellar luxation, so responsible breeding practices are crucial. With proper socialization and training, a Staffy will be a loyal, devoted, and entertaining companion.
