Description
Dog Breed: Hound / Beagle. Heidi came to us as a stray and after being washed 3 times, fed and given a soft bed, she started to settle in. Heidi doesn't like being at the shelter and has some anxiety about it, but who can blame her! Heidi loves to come hang out with us in the office or out in a yard for a while. She smiles too big and always wants you to hold her hand. If she has it her way, you'll be holding her hand and giving her lots of pets. Heidi has been around several other dogs and doesn't mind them hanging out, but she prefers not to have to share her food, bed and toys/treats. We don't know what kind of life she had before she found us, so we assume she has never had her own things, so she guards them now to protect them. Heidi doesn't have the young puppy energy, she would be happy to just hang out with someone and go on walks once in a while. She has not met a stranger yet and loves all the human attention.

A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
