Dog Breed: Hound / Mixed (medium coat). Hi, I'm Nova! I'm a FIDO Project dog- FIDO stands for Florida Inmates & Dog Obedience. I live inside our local men's prison so they can help me learn a few things that might help me find a home. Each FIDO class gets their own theme- ours is called, `The Fanstastic Fur.` I came to the shelter as a stray in July with a few other dogs. We were all living outside in the dirt and sand. No fence, no rules, just living. Iâm known as the easygoing mama dog of the group. I was pretty nervous when moving into the shelter and then the prison. My inmate trainer said he was concerned that I wouldn't settle in. Since then, Iâve fallen in love with the men who help me. They made me feel really loved and I hope the person who takes me home will love me like they do. Since living with them, I've realized I am definitely a companion dog. I love being next to someone. I didn't know how much I was missing. My playstyle with other dogs is called gentle/dainty. I like them, but I donât want to wrestle and grunt make all those noises. I prefer to act like a lady. A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
