Description
Dog Breed: Beagle. Adoption Fee: $250.00. Macie is a spirited beagle who is vision impaired. We aren't sure what she can or cannot see, but it doesn't slow her down at all. She "reads" her world and the people in it well by using that incredible beagle nose. She has mapped her foster home room by room and can confidently navigate the whole house. She can definitely smell squirrels, knows where they are and will give chase singing out her lovely howling bark. And when she gets excited, her big ears flap like she's about to take flight, and her tail spins like a helicopter blade. She definitely makes you laugh! Macie is also deeply affectionate. She demands her snuggles and kisses, and gets a little jealous (in the sweetest way) if attention is going to another dog instead of her. She's made good friends with her foster sister — they walk together, sleep together, and share everything from toys to bones without an ounce of possessiveness. A canine sibling in her new home would mean the world to Macie. She is curious about other dogs but understandably cautious as her blindness makes it a little harder for her to read their body language. She hasn't had much exposure to cats or kids. Macie is high-energy for her age — she knows how to relax during the day but comes alive for play once the workday winds down. She adores enrichment toys, bones, walks, and especially hiking, where she can follow her nose through new smells for hours. She's incredibly food motivated... watch those counters! With routine, frequent trips outside and patience she is improving her house training. She does prefer that her humans are home most of the time though, and has not taken well to being crated. Macie has just had a thorough dental procedure with some necessary extractions. She is heartworm positive and will be scheduled soon for her treatment which we expect to go smoothly. She should be ready for sleepover around the first week of August.

Overview:
The Beagle is a beloved scent hound with a rich history, originally bred in England for hunting hare and rabbit. Their most recognizable physical traits include a sturdy, compact build, adorable floppy ears, and soulful brown or hazel eyes. Beagles typically weigh between 18-30 pounds and stand 13-16 inches tall, featuring a smooth, dense coat that comes in a variety of tri-color or bi-color patterns. In terms of temperament, they are known for being exceptionally friendly, curious, and outgoing, making them wonderful companions for families with children and other pets. However, their strong prey drive and inclination to follow interesting scents mean they require a securely fenced yard and consistent leash training. While adaptable, their need for exercise and tendency to vocalize (howl!) makes them less ideal for small apartment living unless daily walks and mental stimulation are guaranteed. Regarding health, Beagles can be prone to certain conditions like hip dysplasia, epilepsy, and intervertebral disc disease, making responsible breeding and regular veterinary check-ups important.
