Dog Breed: Terrier / Shetland Sheepdog Sheltie / Mixed. sweet shy boy seeking love and safety! OTIS NEEDS A FOSTER OR FOREVER HOME!!!! Name: Otis Best Guess for Breed: Terrier and sheltie mix Best Guess for Age: 1 year as of July 2026 SEX: Male Approximate Weight: 19 lbs Gets Along With: Otis does well with other dogs and needs to go to a home with a welcoming resident dog. We haven't seen him with cats or kids but we are happy to discuss integration techniques with any potential adopters! Currently Living at: Lucky Dog's South Carolina rescue campus; needs a foster or forever home in the DC area to get up here! Special adoption considerations: Otis was rescued from a hoarding situation in South Carolina. He has not been well socialized with new people and has lived his whole life with other dogs. New nosies, cars, bikes, and other things may create fear and anxiety. He will need a patient adopter who can give him time to come out of his shell and learn that the world is a wonderful and welcoming place. And because he is shy, he needs to go to a home with a confident, welcoming resident dog who will show him the ropes. Otis is Looking For: His forever home, filled with snuggles and opportunities to see the world outside of a kennel. One where he is a cherished part of a family. He's very sweet, and SO ready to be a Real Dog. He's a young boy and hasn't seen nearly enough of the world! Extra patient and loving humans who introduce him to new places and people at his pace are exactly what he wants! Along with quality kibble, a cushy dog bed, and endless snuggles. Overview:
A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
