Dog Breed: Shepherd / Mixed. Meet Drake! Drake is a handsome Shepherd mix around 56 years old who is looking for a patient person willing to let him come out of his shell at his own pace. Drake can be nervous around new people and may need some time to feel comfortable. But once he trusts you, he is an absolute sweetheart! He is also a goofy boy who loves toys, has decent leash manners, knows some commands, and has proper manners. He is crate trained, too! Because of his breed and nervous nature, we feel Drake would do best with an adopter who has experience with working breeds and understands the importance of patience, structure, and building trust. He would likely be most comfortable in a home with teens or older. We are unsure how Drake feels about other dogs, so a dog test will be required. We are also unsure about cats, and any introductions should be done very slowly and carefully to make sure everyone is comfortable. Drake is neutered, microchipped, and up to date on his vaccines. A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
