One by one, they were given the chance to leave, travel to the U.S., and begin the lives they deserved. But Zoe was the one no one chose. And she’s still waiting. There is nothing wrong with Zoe. She is calm, sweet, gentle, and simply hoping that someone will finally see her — really see her — and decide that she is worth choosing, too. It breaks our hearts to think about how many days she has watched others leave while she remained behind. But we refuse to let her story end there. Now, we’re determined to change Zoe’s future. She just needs one person to give her a chance. A chance to know what it feels like to be loved. A chance to have a family of her own. A chance to finally go home. Zoe has been waiting long enough. A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
