Meet Calypso 7 Months Old | Dutch Shepherd | Foster or Adopter Needed At just 7 months old, Calypso should have been learning about the world, playing with toys, and discovering how to be a beloved family member. Instead, she spent much of her young life confined to a porch, where concerned neighbors ultimately stepped in after noticing she was being left outside for prolonged periods. Now safe with us, Calypso is getting the fresh start she deserves. Like many puppies who haven't had the opportunity to learn, Calypso is still working on her manners. She's a teenage Dutch Shepherd with plenty of energy, curiosity, and intelligence—but very little guidance so far. She'll need an experienced handler who understands working breeds and is excited to channel her drive into training, structure, and positive experiences. This isn't a dog who's "broken"—she's simply a puppy who missed out on the foundation every dog deserves. With patience, consistency, and leadership, we know Calypso has the potential to grow into an incredible companion. Dutch Shepherds thrive when they're given a job, clear expectations, and a person committed to helping them succeed. The applicant must drive the remainder of the distance of the transport. Overview:
The Hollandse Herdershond, or Dutch Shepherd, is a versatile and intelligent breed originating from the Netherlands, where they were traditionally used by shepherds and farmers for herding and guarding livestock. Physically, they are a medium-sized dog with a powerful, muscular build, typically weighing between 50-70 pounds and standing 21-25 inches tall. Their coats come in three varieties: short-haired, long-haired, and wire-haired, all displaying the breed's distinctive brindle pattern in shades of gold or silver. Temperamentally, Dutch Shepherds are known for their strong work ethic, loyalty, and unwavering devotion to their families. They are highly trainable and excel in various dog sports like obedience, agility, and protection work. While generally good with children, their high energy levels and need for mental stimulation make them better suited for active families with experience in dog ownership, rather than first-time owners or those in apartment settings. Like many active breeds, they can be prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, making responsible breeding and regular veterinary check-ups important for their long-term health.
