Description

Dog Breed: Beagle (medium coat). Meet Harlow, also known as Harley! This sweet Beagle girl was found as a pregnant stray in rural South Carolina and gave birth to her puppies in a local shelter. Thanks to one of our rescue partners, Harlow and her babies were taken in and given a second chance. Her puppies all found rescue, and this sweet mama girl came into our care. Now it's Harlow's turn to find her forever home. Harlow, now affectionately called Harley by her foster family, has settled in well to her new pack, living with a foster mom and dad, four dogs, and a 1-year-old toddler. Like many rescue dogs, she needed time to trust and learn the rules of home life, but her confidence continues to grow every day. She has a "live and let live" personality and has integrated easily with the other dogs. While she enjoys their company and often chooses to nap beside them, she's independent enough to thrive as an only dog, too. Whether she's part of a pack or the center of your world, Harlow is simply happy to be included. Harlow is a medium-energy girl who enjoys exploring the outdoors, zooming around the yard, meeting new people, and, above all else, playing with toys. She LOVES her toys. She happily empties the toy basket, entertains herself, and occasionally breaks into hilarious zoomies. Her nose is also almost always down, as you'd expect from a Beagle, and she does best walking with a harness. Harlow does great in her crate. She may whine or give you her very funny "old lady hound" howl when she sees you, but she settles down and relaxes. She's also very food motivated, which is a big help as she's learning more commands and working on her manners. Like many young dogs who have spent much of their lives living outdoors instead of being pets, Harlow is still learning the rules of home life. She's making great progress with housetraining, does well in her crate, and is learning leash skills. She's not destructive, but may chew something if left unattended for longer periods of time. She's also working on jumping up and counter surfing, typical young-dog behaviors that her foster family is helping her correct. She takes direction well. What stands out most about Harlow is her gentle, loving nature. Her foster family describes her as a very sweet, happy girl who has made great progress adjusting to home life. Watching her discover comfort, routine, and affection has been a joy, and she's ready to leave her life as mama behind and become someone's devoted companion. If you're looking for a kind, gentle Beagle with a playful side who would thrive with an active family willing to continue working on her manners, Harlow may be the perfect addition to your family. A.K.A.: Gascogne-Beagle, Southern Hound, Dwarf Beagle, Pocket Beagle, Glove Beagle, English Beagle, Queen Elizabeth Pocket Beagle, Miniature Beagle, Toy Beagle, French Beagle, Harrier, Basset, Dachshund, Little Hound, Rabbit Hound, Hare Hound, Beag, Begs
Overview:

The Beagle is a beloved scent hound with a rich history, originally bred in England for hunting hare and rabbit. Their most recognizable physical traits include a sturdy, compact build, adorable floppy ears, and soulful brown or hazel eyes. Beagles typically weigh between 18-30 pounds and stand 13-16 inches tall, featuring a smooth, dense coat that comes in a variety of tri-color or bi-color patterns. In terms of temperament, they are known for being exceptionally friendly, curious, and outgoing, making them wonderful companions for families with children and other pets. However, their strong prey drive and inclination to follow interesting scents mean they require a securely fenced yard and consistent leash training. While adaptable, their need for exercise and tendency to vocalize (howl!) makes them less ideal for small apartment living unless daily walks and mental stimulation are guaranteed. Regarding health, Beagles can be prone to certain conditions like hip dysplasia, epilepsy, and intervertebral disc disease, making responsible breeding and regular veterinary check-ups important.
