Description
Dog Breed: Dachshund (long coat). Harley is bonded to her boyfriend, Frankie It's a "adopt one get one free adoption fee" She's a pretty 13 lbs, 14 years old long haired dachshund. She has just had a dental. Her previous owner went into hospice and couldn’t care for her and Frankie any longer. When she came to us, she had hot spots on the skin on her back due to negligence so she is now on a special diet to keep her skin healthy and needs to be fed on a schedule with measured food to keep her weight down. She is potty trained but could risk having an accident here and there if left for a long time without getting out. Like many senior doxies, she has a cataract in her left eye. She likes to take light strolls but struggles if she’s walking for long periods of time. Loves to sun bathe and likes to amble around the house surveying what people are doing, she is genuinely curious about everything happening. She is a little bit of a diva. Her method of communication is to walk up and lightly growl at you (but it’s not in an aggressive manner) to let you know what she wants: to pick her up, take her out, or give her a snack. She would prefer a home where she gets to be the only girl dog, but having a harem with her Frankie and possibly other doxie boys would be totally fine with her.

Overview:
The Dachshund, affectionately known as the "wiener dog," is a fascinating breed originating in Germany, primarily bred to hunt badgers and other burrowing animals. Their most distinctive physical characteristic is their long, low-slung body and short, muscular legs, a feature perfectly adapted for tunneling. They come in three coat types – smooth, longhaired, and wirehaired – and various sizes, from miniature to standard. Temperamentally, Dachshunds are known for being courageous, curious, and often quite playful, with a surprising amount of energy. While they are intelligent, their independent nature can make training a delightful challenge. Their small size and relatively low exercise requirements make them well-suited for apartment living, and they can be wonderful companions for families, though early socialization is key, especially with children and other pets. Regarding health, their unique body shape predisposes them to intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), so careful handling and weight management are crucial.
