Description
Dog Breed: Terrier / Mixed. **Berti is a courtesy post and is not located at or affiliated with Paws Crossed Animal Rescue Meet Berti - a 5 to 6 year old pup who is ready to steal your heart! Berti came to PAWS-LI via a high-kill shelter in NYC after being left behind in a vacant apartment by his previous owner, with only his favorite toys and treats packed up in a bag to go along with him. Berti has been diagnosed with rear leg paralysis, (he wears a diaper for dual incontinence) but with his happy, loving, and playful demeanor, you'd think he didn't even notice. He scoots around well with his upper body strength, quite easily and very quickly! When he needs assistance leaving (or returning to) the house, his foster mom helps him with his harness so he can spend time just lying around or exploring outside and taking in all the scents. If it were up to him, he'd spend hours outside just lazing in the sun, sniffing the air. He is very emotionally intuitive, appearing at his foster mom's side when he senses she's feeling down. He loves to rest his head on everyone's lap, and better yet, would love to lie in your lap if you sit on the floor with him! When it comes time to change his diaper, he assists as best he can, lifting his hips to make it easier for you. He rides great in the car and loves sticking his nose out the window or resting his chin in-between the 2 front seats. He is good with other dogs (very forward and friendly), and unknown with cats at this time, as he has not met one since being taken in by his foster mom. He loves children, especially those who will tug on his rope endlessly with him! He is fine with being left alone in the house and has no separation anxiety whatsoever. Upon returning home, his foster mom receives the most heartfelt greeting! Sometimes his enthusiasm causes him to nearly fall over backwards! He just can't contain his happiness! Also while being left alone, he has not once "relocated" or destroyed a single thing. There is never a need to crate him. Caring for a disabled dog may not always be the easiest undertaking, but the love and appreciation (and laughs!) that Berti has to give you will definitely make up for it. If interested in learning more about him or meeting this sweet boy, please contact adoptionspaws-li.

Breed overview
Overview:
A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
